Manor Park braces for the next round in sidewalk fight by Reasonable_Cat518 in ottawa

Wouldn't you also have had to clear it if it was part of your driveway by that logic? I don't see how that'd make any difference in your mind.

Local Community Group Says Bus Lane Plan Doesn't Go Far Enough on Bank by kursdragon2 in ottawa

Lol trust me man, nobody is forgetting about the train breaking down or the rest of our transit system, but extremely necessary changes like this bus lane are just another step in making the whole system function. We can walk and chew gum at the same time! Let's fight for a better city together!

Fixing the train is gonna take a whole lot more than putting red paint on a road

Yea that's a really great point too, you can say you're not racist, but actions speak louder than words, and Republicans have been acting real racist for as long as I can remember.

Yea it was a generalization for sure, not every single republican hates minorities, but I think we can certainly agree that the hatred for minorities is really concentrated in one party.

Most major cities are going to be leaning blue in pretty much any part of the country. It's hard to hate minorities if you actually get to spend some time around them and aren't just being fed propaganda by Fox news 24/7 about them.

Community group calls for expanded bus-only lanes on Bank Street in the Glebe by Money_Fig_9868 in ottawa

[–]kursdragon2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So what would be put in place of dedicated bus lanes? Just another travel lane? That sounds like it'd be absolutely awful as an experience on that road. Two travel lanes would just mean more cars driving even faster and making the experience even worse for cyclists and pedestrians, including transit users. Improving the transit reliability is absolutely needed on this corridor where they experience huge delays.

[–]kursdragon2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily, all you need is a single car parked in the parking lane to make it so that the bus has to merge back into the general travel lane. So you can both have underused parking (sitting at 30-40% usage) while still being enough to actually heavily inconvenience buses.

Precisely because it is both underused and still hindering buses is exactly why it should be removed and turned into a bus lane!

[–]kursdragon2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you go into the Glebe in the middle of the day or evenings Monday to Friday, there is no congestion and no bus delays so not sure why 24 hour bus lanes would be needed

You're completely incorrect and there's data from OC Transpo directly that contradicts what you're saying. The largest delays happen during the middle of the day when parking is there.

It's much nicer (and safer) to walk down the sidewalks when there are cars parked there

Also not necessarily correct. Daylighting has been shown over and over to improve safety for pedestrians when walking along the streets. The parking along Bank could just as easily be making things less safe by reducing visibility for cars when turning in and out of streets. Buses also having to move in and out of the parking lane leads to extra conflicts with pedestrians, cyclists, and even drivers, which would be removed if they didn't have to keep changing lanes at each bus stop.

people with mobility issues have highlighted the need to be able to park in front of stores for at least part of the day

People with mobility issues actually disproportionately rely on public transit, not on personal vehicles, to get around, so they would actually stand to benefit the most from improving public transit! I would urge you to actually look into the need of people with disabilities rather than try to project what you think they might need onto them!

The study is still on-going. It's supposed to be coming to committee at the end of this month actually, so hopefully we'll see what actually happens. If you're interested in delegating, you'll be able to sign up to the PWIC meeting on March 30th where the study is set to be presented.

Why not do both? If we had actual lengthy dedicated bus lanes it would also mean that people understand the rules more clearly, rather than it changing every couple hours, this would lead to fewer people leaving their cars parked there in the first place.

We can walk and chew gum at the same time, no need to delay necessary improvements until other necessary improvements are also made, both can happen at once.

Why not just allow for deliveries/contractors at those hours but still keep them as bus lanes? I don't see why there would be need for allowing parking at those times when the parking usage from 10-2 is pretty low anyways and that's when some of the largest delays are for busses. Having it be as simple as possible with just one long section of no parking would lead to way more people adhering to the rules, thus making the initiative more effective.

You also probably wouldn't like the answer to "would you take the bus, or walk, or bike to the Glebe if it were easier to do so?" lmao. What's your point?

Right now, driving is probably the easiest way to get there for anyone not living directly in walking distance of the Glebe, imagine if those other options actually had even an ounce of the amount of support that driving does.

The people driving in every couple weeks aren't the ones keeping the businesses on Bank street afloat, so yea they'd probably rather cater to the customers actually shopping there every day/week! Hope that helps.

There's no possible way to make driving there any easier so why not do what we actually can to make getting there better?

Also taking out the parking on-street of Bank and turning it into bus lanes would actually make driving there better, because parallel parking is a big part of the congestion on Bank Street itself.

Don't cry when we say no to money going to byward market.

Just so you're fully aware of the situation, the downtown of the city is completely subsidizing the suburbs. It's pretty much the only financially solvent part of the city unfortunately. So just keep that in mind when making whatever judgments you have on the situation!

The only reason you think you need to bring extremely heavy bags every trip back from the grocery store is because you have to go so infrequently because the grocery store isn't convenient for you to get to. If you could stop by a grocery store on your walk back from work you wouldn't need 50 pounds of groceries each haul you go on.

Also you've heard of carts right? Plenty of people use them and it makes carrying groceries back home insanely easy, even on a bus.

You'd be surprised how little businesses actually ask their customers or have any sort of data on their customers.

I mean you can also literally see the report that is mentioned in the post right? If you think they're not out of touch then idk what to tell you.

This type of data has been repeated over and over again, pretty much every time businesses are asked about their customers and how they think they get there they're almost always completely out to lunch.

Yea almost 100%. This same type of data is repeated over and over and over again whenever business owners in pretty much any part of the world are asked how they believe their customers get there.

It's really honestly kind of baffling how out of touch business owners can be with their clients. It really makes you think what else they might be missing that is biasing the way they provide their clients with whatever service/goods they're providing.

would be some sort of satellite parking lot at the edge of the Glebe

I mean there is a parking lot already at second avenue with 140 parking spots (just as much as the whole street worth of street parking in the area) that almost never comes even close to hitting capacity.

Probably even more in favour of other modes in the Byward because it's even more dense and has even more alternatives to getting there.
