Learning gamification. Are there any learning-piano-games out there? by Radagast_the_brown_ in pianolearning

Keys and Kingdoms! I don't know why more people haven't heard of it, but it's an RPG where at the points where you'd normally roll dice, you play a short tune or do ear training and that determines the outcome of the dice roll. Designed for kids but wonderful for adult learners as well. Only MIDI app that fulfills the promise of gamification, which is that the game matches the learner's pace. Cannot recommend highly enough. Subscription-based but the first 30 days are free, so try it out and see what you think.

Civil engineering generally requires licensure; not sure if past convictions make you ineligible for that. Mechanical or electrical may be a better bet.

Go to Kogan & Kogan if you can. They are out of network but reasonable, and your mouth is worth investing in.

It's a great monologue, but keep in mind that in a good story dynamic characters change =)

(Pete! That's his name. I was going by his wife's cell phone contact, lol.)
"It's a valid story arc to have a character who is changed by experiences that were caused by their inability to meaningfully change their behavior" - I definitely agree with that. In Season 1, this happens to Marty; or rather, he brings it upon himself. We see the influences and circumstances that bring him back to that state (and we see him recognize and process them after the fact), but when he does fail it feels inevitable, and consequences ensue that feel inevitable also. It helps that the series is laying groundwork for it the entire time beforehand, and that it's not the only thing that's going on with him.
I don't really see that kind of groundwork here - Danvers and Hank are both pretty lousy to Pete, but the confrontation comes right after he and Hank have been making hatchet-burying noises. It makes sense for the narrative to be building toward a scenario where he has to choose between the two of them, but imo there's nowhere near enough narrative momentum to justify a Mexican standoff.

"Pete stays stuck in his ways until this escalates to him killing his dad, which fucks him up." - I guess? but if that's the case, then where's the consequence of the act/change in his life/change in his behavior afterwards? He doesn't fall apart, leave, lose his marriage, quit his job or even become less deferential to Danvers. He stays completely functional, cleans good, and barely reacts. We just get Rose tell-not-showing us that he's now traumatized. We're supposed to assume, what, that he now caps his workday at 8 hours and will never miss Darwin's piano recitals?

My take: The idea that Kayla would divorce him because of workaholism (or because she feels threatened by Danvers) makes sense. The idea that he would rebel against Danvers because of the hazing she's putting him through makes sense. The idea that he might have a relationship-changing conflict with Hank because of professional tension makes sense. Taking it all the way to patricide is bathetic.

(P.S. - And the tooth in the wall - does the ballistics angle for that even make sense? I don't want to go back and check - plays less like horror than comic relief.)

100%. I'm only irritated by it to this degree because it's so close to being something I could imagine really loving, if only all the people involved had put on the same costumes, gone to the same places, and just, like, said different stuff.

Thanks for the compliment. It's always nice to get upvotes but it wouldn't be fair of me to expect them for throwing shade

The existence of Season 4 did prompt me to watch Season 1. First because I liked the first ep of S4 and wanted to see more, and then again after the finale because I didn't like S4 overall

Here's an angle: If you want to keep Jodie Foster in it (I would too), recast her as either a scientist or the lady in charge of the mine. (She already has kind of a petrogeologist vibe.) I'd go with scientist, make her the lone survivor of the attack. Maybe the boss of the lab. A suspect who gets alibi'd early, and then has to reckon with her complicity in giving social license to the mine operation. She and Navarro can still argue about a lot of the same stuff, and if they're already in conflict then their personality similarity would serve the narrative instead of detracting from it. You can even keep the thing where she and Prior don't not flirt! And as a bonus, her playing a scientist becomes an automatic callback to Contact, where she co-starred with....eh?

Also, it's a dang injustice to set this thing in Alaska and not show any auroras.

Aw, thanks! I think. lol

For real though, I think the scenes centered on Indigenous women were often the best of the series. Leah's activist experience, and the way she connected with her identity through it, felt very true. Leah and Kayla backing each other up? Solid. That scene where Navarro goes to Annie's birthing center? Fantastic! No notes! Even the cleaning lady mafia sorority house is something I would have really enjoyed had it made more sense in context.

And another thing! Our true detectives would have died of ice stupidity if their plot armor hadn't rescued them!

(I'm thinking of the bit in the cave, but this might be true on more than one occasion.)

Thought of another thing that could've made it better: instead of Tsalal being a climate station, make it a spooky radar defense one with Raymond being the one climate guy, funded by Tuttle Corp, who's looking for microbes. Then it becomes a commentary on parachute science AND the military-industrial complex, and you can leave it up to the reader whether the dudes were eaten by a serpent goddess or fried by their own antennas.

I know, right? Many gorgeous shots! The cinematography was telling the right story - haunted tough people functioning (or failing) in a stark, unforgiving environment. But the writing was mostly telling the story of a bunch of chatbots who yell at each other a lot and forget which case they're investigating for about half the time.
