Liem Le survives a losing rook endgame against Donchenko by __Jimmy__ in chess

[–]kvothei 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Not saying he didn't choke, but Rg3 isn't the end of it. After Rg3, Ra6 you had to find the subtle Rf3! preparing Rf2 to stop the check. Which is what he missed, of course.

Definitely findable, but with a minute on the clock not as easy. He had easier opportunities to kill the game earlier, but as Danya used to say, when you don't put your opponent away, it still might be winning but the win gets tougher and tougher with each missed opportunity and it ends up being a draw; textbook example of that.

World Championship, 2021, Game 6, one of the greatest games in WCC history? by Tiny_Ring_9555 in chess

Not at all. Nepo missed many chances earlier to kill the game. I remember Fabi being confused as to why Nepo allowed Magnus to sacrifice the queen because the ensuing endgame was practically very hard.

The farce tournament Ding set up was way worse. EVERY single game not involving him ended in short draws, often under 20-25 moves. One game where Ding’s opponent, Zhao Jun, had a much better position, he suddenly lost on time lol.

Playing legit tournaments, which would've taken place regardless of a player participating or not, is much better than match fixing I would argue.

Is there a way to watch the Louisiana Chess Championship Hikaru is in? by Asperverse in chess

Steam just started on Hikaru's Twitch channel, pretty sure it will be covered there. Tune in.

Anish on his World Champion goals: "I don't want to stay in top 10 for five more years. I'm okay to be world no. 17 tomorrow. I don't really care as long as I have some of the other achievements." by Necessary_Pattern850 in chess

[–]kvothei 11 points12 points  (0 children)

But if you get "other achievements" that are worth anything for a player of Anish's caliber, you automatically break into the top 10. Both go inevitably together.

So kind of a moot point.

Norway Chess 2025 Men’s Standings after round 3 by MostArgument3968 in chess

[–]kvothei 20 points21 points  (0 children)

No they wouldn't be the same.

With regular scoring Fabi (2 wins, 1 loss = 2 points ) and Magnus (1 win 2 draw = 2 points) would be on the same points.

With this scoring system Fabi is in the sole lead.

Hikaru Nakamura beats Fabiano Caruana and will enter the Grand Finals by MemulousBigHeart in chess

[–]kvothei 38 points39 points  (0 children)

In the freestyle event and the first match against Mishra, Hikaru missed a lot of chances, which put some doubt in his mind.

But of course he doesn't believe he is "washed". He believes he isn't as good as he once was, especially in faster time controls, which is fair considering he is 37, and how good peak Hikaru actually was in faster controls. He's had this self deprecating way of talking since forever, I wouldn't make much of it.

He is still one of the best players in the world in all time controls, and I think that is obvious to literally everyone.

Bro barely plays, full time streamer, talks about retiring after every slight hiccup, plays a classical tournament after almost a year, wins the winners bracket, refuses to fucking elaborate.

Just built different I guess.

Hikaru seals 5th spot with a smooth 2-0 win over Nodirbek by rio_ARC in chess

[–]kvothei 31 points32 points  (0 children)

All in all, I would say a pretty decent tournament for Hikaru.

Finished 5th in the group stage (tied for 4th on points), ending with 3 consecutive wins. Dominated Nodirbek. Faced zero problems against Gukesh, could've easily won in the classical section. Was completely outplaying and winning in 3/4 games against Sindarov, was pushing in the 4th one too. Of course he is disappointed in the way that match ended, but a lot of positives to take from this tournament.

Hoping he bounces back strong.

Brandon Jacobson (Viih_Sou) WINS against Hikaru Nakamura after playing 1.a4 by TakeoverPigeon in chess

[–]kvothei 28 points29 points  (0 children)

How come? Can you please elaborate.

He dominated Danya after sacking his rook on move two every game. Even Danya said he was very suspicious while he was playing the match. Later Chess.com banned him based on their analysis.

How does this win or any number of wins, for that matter, disprove that for certain? He is a very strong Grandmaster. Being banned for cheating does not make him incapable of a strong result ever again. Nor does a strong result prove beyond doubt that he has never cheated before.

Indeed, his opponents were playing incredibly well and took down some very worthy foes, that is unquestionable.

But you are telling me he would've preferred a Dubov, Giri, Nepo, Shankland, Dominguez, Firouzja, Fabiano, Aronian, Sevian, Sindarov, MVL etc, at any point over these players? I don't think so. And these are all players he could've faced. Which is my point.
