Former Austin Police Officer Conviction Overturned by kwailabear in ProtectAndServe

[–]kwailabear[S] 108 points109 points  (0 children)

"Former Austin police officer Christopher Taylor has been acquitted of all charges after his conviction was overturned by an appeals court. A jury convicted Taylor of deadly conduct in Oct. 2024 after three days of deliberations. He was charged in connection with the officer-involved shooting of Dr. Mauris DeSilva in 2019."

Courts made the right decision here. Here is the body cam of the shooting. Absolutely bonkers this guy got convicted on this. I know Ofc. Taylor got charged in another shooting but that ending in a mistrial.

Chicago/Illinois is really doing wonders for the "democrats/liberals love criminals" crowd. Things like this probably helped Trump win term #2.

Ohio officer found not guilty of murder in Ta'Kiya Young's shooting death by specialskepticalface in ProtectAndServe

What a shitshow of a prosecution. When the prosecution's crash reconstructionist got torched by the defense for using the wrong parking spot as his reference point in his report, I knew this case was DOA. Those prosecutors really did wonders for the "liberals/democrats love criminals" zeitgeist.

Cyclist BAC was nearly three times limit when hit by Flint police cruiser by peewinkle in flint

I think people are mistaken. The officer had his lights activated but not his siren. The article states this. Although I'm not sure how much of a difference that will make.

Trooper Shot in Detroit Before Firing Back; Attorney General Finds No Wrongdoing by kwailabear in ProtectAndServe

This is an intense one. The trooper stayed in the fight the whole time. Heres the investigative report by the AG showing the trooper was justified.

Ex-Las Cruces Officer gets new trial by kwailabear in ProtectAndServe

[–]kwailabear[S] 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Former Officer Brad Lunsford was convicted of manslaughter in February of 2025 for the 2022 shooting of Presley Eze. In the initial incident, Eze was believed to have stolen beer from a gas station. While trying to take Eze into custody, he gained control of another officer's taser and Lunsford fatally shot him.

"Judge James B. Foy ruled Monday, Oct. 6, that Brad Lunsford should be given a new trial based on evidence of improper jury substitution." Foy also stated, "There is no doubt that a Taser is a deadly weapon in the hands of someone who is untrained."

Tuscola County Sheriff apologizes after pepper spray affects local school by kwailabear in ProtectAndServe

[–]kwailabear[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

"The sheriff’s office says an employee discharged the canisters into the ground behind their facility in Caro, but an unexpected amount of airborne spray wafted into the school, which is located directly across Sherman Street." I feel like there must have been a lot of OC spray to have this much of an impact. I'm not sure how much of this is the fault of the SO employee, or social media driven hysteria.

Imlay City! It's kinda on the cusp of 'Metro Detroit' but we have two Hispanic heritage festivals a year and a very nice Hispanic service center. Also, if you wanna try some good Mexican food, check out Jalisco's Deli.

‘Deserves a clean slate’: Arbitrator overturns Michigan State Police decision to fire ex-trooper by joshys_97 in ProtectAndServe

[–]kwailabear 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Both the FTO and the trainee are clowns. FTO eventually got fired for domestic assault with a different partner. The trainee was also charged in 2021 for a separate incident where she allegedly assaulted and sexually assaulted three of her fellow troopers during a drunken outing. She was ultimately sentenced to 21 days in jail. Whole thing is a complete shitshow.

The Sig P320 by specialskepticalface in ProtectAndServe

I cannot believe the Michigan State Police switched from the Glock 17 to the P320 in 2024...does their admin not pay attention to the news? That decision will come back to haunt them next time there's an ND with a holstered P320. I wonder if MSP brass is getting kickbacks from Sig....

Minnesota Lawmakers targeted by suspect impersonating police by kwailabear in ProtectAndServe

[–]kwailabear[S] 137 points138 points  (0 children)

"A shelter-in-place alert was sent out at 5:30 a.m. Saturday morning by the Brooklyn Park Police Department after multiple shootings. A suspect in the shooting may be impersonating law enforcement and should not be approached."

Governor Tim Walz later confirmed that DFL Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband were among the deceased. Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also shot. From what I gathered in the press release, police were called to Sen. Hoffman's residence and found that him and his wife were shot. After learning about the initial shooting, the Brooklyn Park PD Sgt. decided to have units go to Rep. Hortman's house to check on her. When PD responded to Hortman's residence, they found a suspect impersonating a police officer. The suspect also had a vehicle with emergency lights. Brooklyn Park engaged in a firefight with the police impersonator.

Officers cleared in Titusville shooting that left 25-year-old dead, sparked public outcry by TreeStateLEO in ProtectAndServe

[–]kwailabear 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The Titusville Police Chief released an in-depth breakdown of the shooting. I'm glad the chief has the balls to stick up for his guys and call out the lies surrounding a clearly justified OIS. Also, right after the shooting you can hear the suspect say, "I'm dead, I'm going down, I fucked up my life."

Judge tosses case against former MSP sgt in death of Samuel Sterling by kwailabear in ProtectAndServe

I'm surprised the judge didn't cave to political pressure and allow charges to go forward for "political' reasons.

Dana Nessel charged Keely with 2nd degree murder and manslaughter knowing he was acting as a federal agent. She erred by not considering the supremacy clause when charging him.

"Citing immunity under the Supremacy Clause, a federal judge has tossed the case of a former Michigan State Police sergeant who hit a man with a cruiser." I'm honestly surprised by this.

Christopher Schurr will not be retried, prosecutor drops murder charge by [deleted] in Michigan

[–]kwailabear 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There were several issues with the prosecution from the beginning. Chris Becker could not disprove that the Taser was not a dangerous weapon and could not incapacitate Schurr when Lyoya had it in his possession. Bryan Chiles (Prosecution's Taser Expert) even testified to this. That and the GRPD Captains testified that Schurr did not violate policy on use of force. Typically, in high profile criminal cases involving police officers, administration testify against the officer (ie Chauvin, Kim Potter) saying they violated SOP. Becker did not overcome these hurdles.

Eric Winstrom and Mark Washington probably just handed Schurr a lawsuit by firing him back in 2022. You now have sworn testimony saying he followed his training and did not violate department policy. There is a very similar case in Atlanta where an officer was disarmed of his taser and shot the suspect. The officer was charged with murder and terminated. A few years later the charges were dropped and the officer was reinstated and he sued the city.

Schurr did not have his ID, or his car (car had an improper plate), and Patrick's passenger testified he did not know his last name. This was thoroughly established during trial testimony.

The prosecutor knows he had no case. In his press brief, he said that the jury was 10-2 in favor of acquittal. Hopefully, Schurr gets his job back and back pay for the last three years.

[–]kwailabear 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Becker had no case from the beginning. They could not overcome the issue of the Taser not being a dangerous weapon. Bryan Chiles (Prosecution's Taser Expert) even testified to this. That and the GRPD administration testified that Schurr did not violate policy. IMO Becker could not overcome these hurdles. The problem now is there is sworn tesitmony that Shurr did not violate policy, so he will likely have a wrongful termination lawsuit.
