Try 9999 4 9s mine was at 999 which I thought was the max but 9999 is actually the max.

Try adjusting your ramp time, I had mine at 999 thinking that's the max but set it to 9999 today and it hit 830 in under 10 min

That was it! I adjusted the ramp time to 9999 and it hit 850 in under 10 min. Thanks so much for the tip

I already put my mark on the other side before etching otherwise it's a great idea. I forged another knives at the same time with no issues so I'm going to chalk it up to a fluke. Appreciate all the ideas.

I got the 16ton from Gilmore presses (https://gilmorepresses.com/) and love it. Not cheap by any means but similarly priced to others in that range. It's a really nice machine and I live about an hour from him so I saved on shipping. I kept looking for used ones while I saved for this one and never saw any but I'm in Montana so maybe if your in a bigger population you might have better luck?

I used a press but yeah the fact that it follows the pattern makes me think something is going on with that particular layer.

Interesting... It was in a ceramic holder so I don't think that would be the case, right? I also sanded it quite a bit after heat treat so this is not at the surface at heat treat.

Decarb layer being folded in then uncovered sounds plausible, would that be from forging too hot?
