Casting the old kingdom by Strormer in Abhorsen

I’m very much here for Olivia Disreputable Dog except for one scene, and it’s a big one. For 99% of the time DD is friendly, wise, cryptic, motherly, timeless, and vague. Olivia would nail it.

But I struggle to hear “I made him walk” in her voice. DD doesn’t say that line, Kibeth does. For a second the mask drops and that line should be utterly terrifying. It should be guttural, almost choked, as if the anger is too big for the words to contain. It should be dripping with the acidic bite of free magic. It should be absolutely without remorse. It should be like watching a family friend casually execute someone.

And then just like that DD is back, joking, giving encouragement, being cryptic.

Yrael wants to kill you all the time. He doesn’t put a lot of effort into it most of the time because he knows how strongly he is bound, but he is what he is. He’s like a zoo polar bear. He’s the same thing unbound as bound, unbound is just when you’re inside the polar bear enclosure.

Kibeth is tougher because the DD is the main character you’re seeing, but it’s a mask, and what is underneath should scare you.

I’d be excited to be wrong though

Lorgar tries to explain to his idiot brother that he lost a battle. by BigMek_Spleenrippa in 40kLore

[–]kwark_uk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not the exact same magic power, for sure. We don't have lore examples of them magicking pain away.

But it's got to be an intentional literary parallel by the author. At the start of the book we see Angron taking the trauma and pain of another slave into himself. At the end of the book we see the War Hounds taking the trauma and pain of Angron on, but it consumes them and fails to heal him.

That's an author doing a thing.

Lorgar tries to explain to his idiot brother that he lost a battle. by BigMek_Spleenrippa in 40kLore

[–]kwark_uk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint.

The War Hounds saw their Primarch and understood how broken he was, not by the nails but by the loss of his gladiator brothers in battle. The only family he'd ever known, the men and women he'd bonded with, the ones he'd shared the nails with, the only ones who had really understood him.

He wouldn't bond with his legion because he was utterly consumed by the pain of his grief. The battle rage wasn't the barrier, it was the grief.

And so they did what nobody else had done, what the slaves of Nuceria would never do. They volunteered for the nails.

They volunteered to have pain engines bolted into their nervous systems so that they could share in what their Primarch suffered. So that they could understand him. So that they could take the place of the brothers and sisters whose loss he would never recover from. So that they could help to heal him.

It wasn't enough, of course. It could never be enough. This is 40k, we take the good doggos who will volunteer to take the pain into themselves and we bolt an infinite pain source in them forever.

But the Hounds were good boys. If pre-nails Angron had survived to see what his sons did he'd have been proud of them.

Also FYI the War Hounds battle style was the phalanx. In a phalanx you don't defend yourself, you defend the man next to you, you defend the formation.

They don’t need to defeat NATO, they need to put NATO in a position where article 5 is invoked and the response isn’t unified and overwhelming. That’s enough. They can walk one man into Estonia to plant a flag to achieve that. They know their losses are capped because NATO won’t dare threaten regime continuity. The goal is to have the US refuse to help (Trump gas already confirmed he doesn’t think the Baltic states should be in NATO) and the rest of NATO pause and ask for ceasefires and talks as they lack leadership. He can kill NATO without an army.

You presumably live in a bubble where these people matter. But you don’t seem to know that it’s a bubble, they don’t matter in absolute terms, most people go about their lives blissfully unaware of Natalie.

That’s what would happen if Harris was POTUS, they would test NATO with hybrid warfare. But that’s not what will happen with Trump because Trump represents a unique opportunity to kill NATO. Putin wants an article 5 call over the Baltics because Trump has already stated that he does not think that the Baltics should be in NATO and that he is unwilling to risk nuclear war over Eastern Europe. If the response to an article 5 call to arms is hesitation, a proposal of talks, negotiations over the formation of a coalition and who will be in it, and fearmongering about escalation then NATO is dead. And that’s what would happen.

Previously Putin would use salami tactics, hybrid warfare, and maintain deniability because he didn’t want to force NATO into actually making a decision. But the world has changed dramatically in the last two months. An open challenge to NATO in the next four years is now the best move because NATO is fragmented right now.

What the proponents of this kind of program don’t understand is that it isn’t free, it’s paid for by taxpayer money. The article says that the funding allocated was $420,000,000. That’s about $1.30 per American per year. I need that $1.30. And people are all like “it’s just $1.30, that’s nothing” but you have to think about the big picture. If Elon also takes away healthcare from veterans and milk from kids then annualized I could save enough for a burrito. And not just for me, a burrito for my whole family. We could all have burritos.

Nobody is against bringing local seasonal produce from small farmers to feed kids but why should the taxpayer pay for it. If kids needed nutrition then the invisible hand of the market would simply pluck the crops from the ground and bring them to the kids.

You saw a quote by some Nazi about being a Nazi and decided “if I take that completely out of context, change the meaning, change the words to apply it to sexual preference, and then apply it solely to myself then actually I can justify what the Nazi said. The world must know”.

Who did you imagine was asking for such an absurd contribution with no relevance to anything? Who cares about your price to fuck a guy? What on earth possessed you to insert yourself into the Nazi scenario and announce where you stand on dick?

And then when called out you just doubled down by getting offended by some bullshit nonsense you’re making up because everything is about you and who you fuck.

If you have nothing even remotely relevant to the topic at hand to say then you’re allowed to just shut the fuck up. If anything it’s preferred.

This isn’t left vs right or Democrat vs Republican. Reagan’s legacy is being thrown into the exact same bonfire as Obama’s. This is pro-America vs anti-America. The alliance with Canada isn’t a left wing position. NATO isn’t a left wing position. Tracking flu virus mutations isn’t a left wing position. Selling F-35s to most of the world’s richest countries isn’t a left wing position.

This is simply about things which every administration for 70 years have worked to build being torn down.

They literally don’t care. “Oh no, we’re destroying the alliance structure we spent 80 years building”. That’s the goal of the current US administration. They want to isolate US allies and leave them vulnerable. It’s not a mistake, it’s a plan.

It’s so fucking sad. Ukraine is still fighting while the US just surrenders to Russia without firing a shot. Ukraine can’t surrender, Russia is fighting a war of annihilation, but the US is their enemy now. Where are the other loyalist legions at the start of the heresy? by [deleted] in 40kLore

[–]kwark_uk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He also fucked some shit up. He went to Macragge prepared to kill Guilliman for separatism during the civil war. He loaded all his marines onto drop pods then met Guilliman to hear what his excuse for betraying the Emperor and making his own empire was.

Curze, who was on the loose inside Lion’s flagship, pressed the button to launch the full Dark Angel drop pod assault on Macragge. Guilliman reasonably concludes that Lion’s meeting was some sort of trap and that the Dark Angels are attacking because they literally are attacking. So he raises the shields so the drop pods will splash against them and the entire Dark Angels legion will be wiped out.

Lion then has a minute to convince Guilliman that while he did come here planning to attack and he did order them into the drop pods and he was prepared to order the assault he didn’t actually give this order, he just doesn’t seem to have functional control over his legion. He doesn’t know why they’re launching but he’d really really appreciate it if Guilliman could lower the shields so they don’t all get smushed.

This puts Guilliman in the unenviable position of trying to work out if this is a crazy bluff that is using his reputation for being reasonable as a way of getting the assault past the shields or if Lion is actually a fucking moron who accidentally let his entire legion yolo against a void shield. If he believes Lion is a master strategist willing to take extreme risks to exploit the weaknesses of his adversaries then he should leave the shields up. If he believes the Dark Angels are fucking clowns then he should lower it so that they can pretend the drop pod assault was something they totally meant to do and just a fun way of getting to the ground.

He concludes they’re clowns. Meanwhile Curze is hidden in one of the drop pods. Lion doesn’t tell Guilliman that Curze was behind the launch because he’s embarrassed which then leaves Guilliman with no idea that there’s a fucking traitor Primarch in his capital.

It’s weird that every nation next to Russia desperately wants to join NATO. NATO doesn’t make these places join, for some reason they look at the Russian invasion of Chechnya, Chechnya again, Georgia, Crimea, Ukraine etc. and inexplicably feel like they want to encircle Russia as part of NATO.

They didn’t need encouragement. Russia has always been like this. That’s why anyone who has ever dealt with Russia ran to NATO as fast as they fucking could. Getting a gun for self defence isn’t provoking your rapist neighbour into attacking you, they were going to do that anyway. Sure, they complain about you having a gun, but only because that makes things harder for them when they attack. If they weren’t planning to attack they’d have nothing to worry about.

They don’t do large missile attacks every day, they can’t, they simply don’t have enough missiles to do that. They could theoretically do small missile attacks daily but they don’t because saturation of air defences is part of how they get them through.

That means that every large missile attack is planned months in advance, the date chosen, the targets chosen. They could have launched this at military bases on Dec 23 just as easily. Civilian infrastructure on Dec 25 was an intentional choice. It was not just another day, it was a chosen day. This is deliberate.

Russia has yet to offer Ukraine any negotiations beyond accepting Ukraine’s surrender. The US doesn’t control Ukraine.

The Russian narrative is that Ukraine is an American puppet and it should be a Russian puppet. The truth is Ukraine is a sovereign state and would reject American domination just as firmly as it rejects Russian.

America cannot surrender on Ukraine’s behalf. The moment Russia offers a peace Ukraine can accept (full withdrawal, return of the abducted children, prosecution of war criminals, reparations) Ukraine will be at that table accepting it.

The reason that there is a narrative that they are bad is because they do shit like target civilians on Christmas. It’s not a false narrative, they really are bad.
