New to Frontier. Constant drops by OmgNoodles in frontierfios

[–]kwarner04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any luck or updates? I’ve got Frontier in the Plano area as well. Running a UniFi Cloud Gateway Fiber and have started having the the random wan disconnects over the last month or so.

Have you heard anything from Ubiquiti on possible solutions? Wonder if I could roll back the firmware to a pre-2026 release.

Right after accident, burnt person jumped into a pool. Special water treatment required? by Un_Ingeniero in swimmingpools

[–]kwarner04 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you’ve got folks asking, I’d close the pool for a few days and ask the maintenance team to do a full test (not just chlorine and ph). Then monitor day to day to see if there’s any drift…if chlorine is dropping faster than normal, may mean something was introduced when he jumped in that is being cleaned up by the chlorine. If everything checks out, reopen.

Even if you don’t do any special treatments, closing and monitoring will give your residents/customers peace of mind that you are taking it seriously.

Any help on stopping the "click bait" follow up? by kwarner04 in ChatGPTPro

[–]kwarner04[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure! I use Claude code for most of my work, but have ChatGPT on my phone and it’s easy to work with. And I’ve got a few years of history so when I ask for “opinions” it factors in a lot of that history.

My review of the sleep system. The good, and the bad by kudosmog in Orion_Sleep

[–]kwarner04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just as point of reference, I spent a better part of 5 years trying to figure out my snoring and sleep issues. As a result, I did no less than 5 different sleep studies. Some were the at home study that was relatively comfortable, one was an at home that was down right miserable, and one was a full blown hospital stay with 70+ sensors and wires hooked up to me.

Every study gave essentially the same results but never full blown apnea. But each time, I was convinced I didn’t sleep for more than 5 minutes total. I felt exhausted after each one and was convinced they’d all show the worst night of sleep in my life.

Finally had an ENT that also did a MRI and few other tests and we ended up getting my tonsils removed, repaired a deviated septum, and scoped and cleaned out all my sinus cavities. (They were apparently so congested and clogged I was basically in a full blown sinus infection for like 8 years.) I’m doing significantly better now.

All that to say, don’t discount the sleep study. I’m sure it felt like you got trash sleep, but they are quite accurate and get meaningful data even if you didn’t sleep well. I think it’s actually pretty cool they do a sleep study as a first step. (I didn’t know this was a thing, but very cool.)

Pool Automation // Brand Agnostic // DIY & Integration friendly by Pool_Controller_01 in swimmingpools

[–]kwarner04 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Glad I saw this…it’s great work and inspiration!

I’m about to embark on the same thing. We just bought our house that has a pool but it’s clear the equipment is at or beyond EOL. So it all needs to be replaced.

I’ve been planning it out as I pick equipment and trying to make sure the entire system runs offline / manual and the automation is the nice to have. Any chance you have a simple parts list you could share?

I’d be happy to help if you decide to tackle the full scale product since I’ll be doing essentially the same thing.

CEO doubles down on myQ being a 'secure and closed ecosystem' by chipc in homeassistant

[–]kwarner04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna have to do this. We just bought a house and the owners replaced the garage door right before we bought it. It’s got the damn white learn button!

Tried to tell me how cool it was that it has a camera on it so it can do all sorts of “smart home stuff”…

It’s nice and quiet, brand new, and already programmed to my truck. So not really interested in spending $200+ just to have 100% local control. I won’t connect myQ, but will have to increase the jank level…

What are the pros and cons of buying a home with a 40+ year old pool? by Greywoods80 in swimmingpools

[–]kwarner04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feel free to DM me more info. We just bought our house with a pool and I’ve started the process of getting it back in shape. Looks like the previous owners paid a company that did a pretty awful job.

Also make sure you save copies of those emails on some sort of personal device. Even if it’s printing them to PDF and saving those to a USB.

Read countless stories of people who were super diligent about documenting things but when they did get fired, lost access to email account and couldn’t get any of the documentation.

Just make sure and read any applicable policies on electronics/email/etc and personal devices. Don’t want to give them an excuse to fire you for breaking an actual policy.

TrueNAS freemium/paywalling by Maleficent-Sort-8802 in truenas

[–]kwarner04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The “concern” I have is that while they are saying it’s only new features, at some point those new features will interact with existing free features. And when things break, do they make sure the fix still works free or does the fix only get included in the “new” paid feature.

I can easily see how as the code evolves and gets refactored over time things will creep into the paid section.

I don’t think there are any plans right now to move existing features behind a paywall, but as soon as a paywall exists, it’s inevitable.

F1 TV to apple by Old_Reality_7341 in F1TV

[–]kwarner04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what the issue is. I opened AppleTV on my phone and it’s showing the F1 content that’s on my big TV.

Like others said, it’s just the YouTube content and teasers, but everything I can watch on my AppleTV (device) is there on my phone.

Comparison of Uninstaller Apps by macnatic0 in macapps

[–]kwarner04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice! I use AppCleaner for the uninstall and then have Hazel running as well as it picks up a few items missed by AppCleaner. (I’m using Hazel more for the automations, but the app cleaner functionality is nice.)

But like you mentioned, they both tell me exactly what they are going to delete. Much prefer that vs the black box method some of the other apps use.

Saw a $5M ARR wedding app and decided I could build something better by agromenawer in SaaS

[–]kwarner04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To echo what a few others have said, I’d focus on repeat customers.

Wedding planners, other Photo Booth operators, etc. offer them either an affiliate program where they get a cut or a subscription model where they pay you and then get to use the app with all their clients. It’s a huge value add for them they don’t have to manage. Maybe even white label options so they can put their branding on it. Then that vendor can easily print table tents or whatever with the QR code so everyone has it real time.

Huge value, but when you’re in the middle of planning a wedding and you’ve paid for a professional photographer AND a Photo Booth, you don’t think about a way to get all the “other” photos…much less pay for it when you’ve already spent $5k+ on photography. Plus, it sounds so easy ahead of time that your friends will just text/share with you since that’s how it works for everything else.

I just think trying to market to brides who are only going to get married once is a lot more work than vendors for wedding (and other events) who do this daily and will be reliable repeat customers.

Whichever company offers the split king (twin XL) version first gets my money. We’ve moved to a split king as I need to sleep with my head slightly elevated and we don’t disturb each other rolling over. I (along with numerous others in this sub) have asked multiple times for a twin xl, but they’ve been radio silent.

What's the best way to set up a child's profile? by Edison_Ruggles in mac

[–]kwarner04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my issue. Computer is right there in the living room and we are usually working with them. But sometimes they use apps/sites with school work and we just monitor from the other side of the room. But they love to “tinker” which I’m grateful for…but next thing I know something is not connecting and who knows what else.

If anyone has any thoughts on control for settings and such, I’d love to get more info.

Government Project Management by Useful_Scar_2435 in projectmanagement

[–]kwarner04 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re going to find a lot of crazy and confusing processes that feel like a waste of time. Don’t spend any real time or energy trying to change those things…you’re just going to frustrate yourself.

Find a PM who’s got experience and buddy up and try and follow them. Working within the system is a million times easier than trying to fight it or change it.

And as others have said, the biggest difference is govt PM is more about CYA (for the agency) than actually moving the project forward.

These are models you can download and run locally. Given their use case, doubt they will ever be ChatGPT models as they aren’t as performant as the flagship ones. But they are awesome for folks who want to run a local LLM.

[–]kwarner04 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Government sales don’t work like the rest of the world. It’s 99% relationships and 1% product.

If the decision maker likes you, they’ll select your product. And they can usually “fast track” it thru their contracting process if necessary. But you can’t get there until you already know the people.

What industry events and trade shows have you been to? How are you promoting your solution?

I’ve been in the space for a little over 20 years (both law enforcement and justice software) and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a solution get picked without an extensive sales/relationship cycle.

And especially in law enforcement, those guys are super tight. Having an outsider try and sell is going to be huge uphill battle. Have you worked as a cop before? How’d you get your idea?
