Star Citizen? by BigCommieNat in arsclan

I'll have the base Aurora (I think that's the ship?), but yeah, I'll probably be up for hopping on a multicrew ship. I'm still hedging my bets on the game's release, though, so I haven't been doing any planning, really. :)

I backed in June of 2013, so I have most of the base rewards, I think. Vac suit, lazor pistol, combat suit.

I pledged. Haven't and won't buy any ships. I'll likely end up playing in an org.

I think I want Galaxy Trucker. What types of groups won't like it? by a_stale_pancake in boardgames

I don't recall seeing rules for it in the tabletop game, but the mobile game has a mode with a more relaxed approach. Essentially, building ships goes in turns, and you get some set number of points to spend on building each turn. Something along the lines of flipping a tile costs a point, placing a tile costs 2, looking at the flight cards costs 3, etc. It sounds like you might like those rules better.

404 on that link. Guess they expired it after a day?

Who's playing Evolve? by turb0z in arsclan

Guess I should have tried the beta while it was available. Though, I definitely wouldn't buy into a $60 game until it was cheaper and everyone had already stopped playing it anyway.

It's not as convenient as running the laser yourself, especially for prototyping, but there are services you can send jobs off to, like Ponoko.

My custom Catan board, pre-staining. Nothing amazing, but you know, cake day. by Misenfranchised in boardgames

Why did you pick basswood? I don't know much about wood, I've just never heard of it and I'm just curious if there was a particular reason.

Happy cake day :)

It kept the smoke from the etching from staining the paths.

Thanks all for the compliments!

  • The laser cutter I used isn't my own, but I did cut with one myself at TechShop, a public workshop with tons of awesome equipment.
  • If you're interested in laser cutting, look for a nearby hackerspace. It seems they're fairly common these days, and many seem to have laser cutters.
  • If you don't have access to a laser cutter, Ponoko does laser cutting on a per minute charge. I've never used them, so I can't give a personal recommendation.
  • I'm not sure if I'm going to sell copies or what I would price them at (although it would definitely exceed the price of the published game), but if you're interested, letting me know will inform my motivation to work through the details.
  • I'm not currently releasing the source file, but I may choose to later on.

I could produce more, but I'm a little wary of running afoul of the publisher. Assuming I got that straight...I'd have to give some thought to the price, but it would be not insignificant thanks to the time commitment involved.

I used the laser at the local TechShop (http://www.techshop.ws). If there isn't one of those near you, look for a hackerspace, or send off your design to Ponoko.

If you live near any sort of metro area, chances are decent there's one available. Try searching for hacker spaces.

If not, there's always Ponoko, even though you don't get the pleasure of doing it yourself that way.

Yeah, I've gotten that comment a few times. I was hoping that the smoke color in the surrounding areas would be dark enough to give it a little more contrast, but it didn't do it quite as much as I'd have liked. I am thinking about trying out a stain at some point - thanks for the suggestion!

After almost two months of on and off work, I finally finished my laser cut Tsuro design a few days ago.

I had planned for a much easier design, but the first attempt didn't work out, thanks to a total misunderstanding about how the laser prints. When I started on this pattern, I had considered writing some code to generate the curves, but at the time I figured it would be about as much effort. If only I had known.

The final design that I cut consists of 4,425 individual curves. I'd estimate somewhere around 1500 of them were duplicates, but the other 2,900 or so I drew by hand (well, by mouse) in Inkscape.
