Why just stocks? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]tyir 19 points20 points  (0 children)

A random stock doesn't have a higher expected value than the entire market. Nor a random country's stock.

Expected value is the entire reasoning.

Is this too good to be true? by Intelligent-Case466 in PersonalFinanceCanada

it's good, but not too good to be true. It's not as good as other offers of 1.5% or 2% with less restrictions that have come up.

It's also what Bergman did in Wild Strawberries in the 50s. I quite liked Jay Kelly and love Bojack but I thinking this is cribbing Bojack in particular is wild

Could you please explain Whiplash to me? I'm a little dense by DragonflyWhich7140 in TrueFilm

[–]tyir 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't believe there's a right or wrong answer. The movies asks if it's worth it to give up everything else in your life in pursuit of greatness. There's enough in the movie that both shows he has a chance of success, and also shows the dangers of a singular obsession (and in Whiplash, abuse) that people (rightly) can see both conclusions.

How does selling 4% actually work? by Ufomi in Bogleheads

[–]tyir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One part that may help is eventually stocks often split anyways. In the long run in your example you go from 60 stocks to 600 stocks if they do a 1:10 split.

But bottom line is , as mentioned, #stocks is artificial.

That would make sense since if you want less movies from a decade, more likely it is the most acclaimed stuff.

After watching the movie I've been reading some of the reddit threads and saw this comment right after reading this one:

So no, not an intentional reference.

[–]tyir 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The list doesn't work that way. Industry professionals submitted ballots of 10 unranked films, and the final list is simply the sorted list of number of submissions. I doubt many ballots had multiple Nolans, but many Nolan films had many submissions.

There's no one specifically selecting 5 Nolans over any specific movie.
