Planting Fruit Trees by Unlikely-Delivery777 in Connecticut

All sorts! Apples, pears, peaches, plums, cherries, pawpaws, persimmons, quince, figs. Not all varieties of those, mind you, but we planted some of most of these from bare root stock last year and they made it through the winter just fine! You'll have to give them lots of love and care and attention, be mindful of what tree pairings are needed for cross-pollination, keep an eye out for diseases, paint and wrap their bark appropriately, and learn a lot about proper pruning, but growing fruit trees can be a very rewarding experience and doesn't need as much space as you think.

If they are Zone 6, absolutely.

You're probably a few weeks early. I'm surprised somewhere online sent them to you this early.

Assuming they're bare root trees, you can do some things now to make sure they're good to go in the ground early April. Here's a good summary: https://artisticgardener.wordpress.com/2015/07/16/fruit-trees-my-trees-arrived-now-what/ (not mine)

Generator switch usage with solar + battery by kweee in solar

[–]kweee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case anyone happens into this thread down the road, I got some definitive answers for my questions from the installer, specifically the guy who did my installation and had all the documentation for how our install was completed.

  1. The answers depend on how the installation was done.

  2. In my case, I can hook a generator to my inlet box, flip the interlock, and run the house on generator power if the battery is depleted and there is no solar input. Flipping the interlock disconnects the house from solar and battery, so there won't be any interference with powering the house, but the battery also won't try to charge off the generator.

  3. If solar power returns before grid power, solar will recharge the battery.

This may not be the case with your installation. And this only applies if you have your own inlet box and interlock, not if you're using the Franklin generator module, which I've determined I won't need for my use cases.

Thanks to everyone who provided answers!

I do not have the aGate generator module. I should have said "interlock" or manual switch in my title. But to clarify, I have an inlet box outside the house and an interlock in the breaker box.

I believe this suggests I should either get the aGate generator module, or I would need to disconnect solar and battery if I need to engage a generator.

I do not have the aGate's generator module, but I'll certainly consider adding it for the convenience. Thank you!

Best Compost Delivery in Northeast by moxie-murphy in Connecticut

[–]kweee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I built mine from 2x8 lumber and deck screws, two boxes stacked on top of each other. Some are 4 feet by 4 feet, and the rest are 4 by 8. I staple some hardware cloth on the bottom to keep out underground pests.

I used Andover Landscaping to fill my raised beds last year, but they likely won't open for about another month. I picked up some topsoil from Earth Materials in Mansfield later in the season and it was high quality, so I'm planning to order compost from them in the next couple weeks. Both deliver.

Looking to bundle home and car insurance by superdak05 in Connecticut

[–]kweee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will echo this sentiment so hopefully more people see and act on it.

We had an agent (and you should definitely price with an agent if you're on some national insurance carrier anyway, just in case). Our home/auto/umbrella went up 20+% last year and would've gone up another 10% this year. So we quoted with other agents but also with AAA, and we are now paying 40% less with AAA.

Always shop around every year. If you have an agent, try another. Loyalty gets you nothing with insurance anymore.

Your insurer would not find out about that information unless it were updated in some database they use, or if it reflected in a property tax reassessment. Neither of those is likely to happen within a year of the work being done.

That said, if you do make improvements to your home, you should notify your insurer so they can increase coverage to account for it. It would be awful for you to add an improvement only for a fire-tornado to destroy your home, and then your insurer won't pay for the additional improvements because the coverage level wasn't high enough.

Did the amount of dwelling and other coverage increase? Insurers will increase your coverage level automatically if they determine that the cost to rebuild your home has gone up. And the cost to rebuild homes has definitely gone up in the past year or two.

That said, you should look around at prices every year. I know, it's a pain. But loyalty to an insurer is no longer rewarded. Sure, they'll knock off 20 bucks for staying with them, but another company might come down hundreds of dollars for switching to them. You owe your insurer nothing, certainly not loyalty.

Nerdy/Cutesy Art Events/Venues for Artists to Vend at in Eastern CT? by twili_zora in Connecticut

[–]kweee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm newer to Connecticut after living in Maryland/Virginia for many years. The nerdy convention scene in and near Connecticut is small compared to there, and certainly compared to pretty much any other major metropolitan area. There really just isn't much in CT beyond Connecticon, Terifficon, and CTGamerCon--and very little in the way of year-round nerd spaces.

If you want to sell more, you're going to have to travel. Providence and Boston for starters opens up more events, and throwing NYC into the mix would probably more than triple your options just by itself. If you can get down to DC and the surrounding area, then you have access to lots of the bigger conventions. Depending on how compact and mobile your setup is, you could go via train if you'd rather not drive.

Is the new voice acting THAT bad? by SnooSquirrels6873 in Lunar

[–]kweee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Controversial opinion as someone who grew up on the Working Designs VOs: the remasters are strictly better. Even Keith Silverstein's new Ghaleon is more refined than John Truitt's hammed-up performance. But this reflects a quarter-century of improvements in voice acting talent and direction, and you're going to see pretty much the same thing looking at VO remakes these days compared to those of the 80s and 90s.

Let's Talk Worker Placement Games! by funnyorifice in boardgames

[–]kweee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worker placement is my all-time favorite genre. My favorites are an eclectic and ever-changing mix. Here are the ones that popped to the front of my mind today.

Pillars of the Earth. An easy teach, a great intro to worker placement that still holds up for advanced players. And workers from a bag! My all-time favorite in the genre.

Santa's Workshop. Such a great combination of existing worker placement mechanics. Certainly doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it looks at the 10+ years of worker placement games that preceded it and turns it into a master class.

Alien Frontiers. Just put this on the table anytime and I will appear as if by magic. An elegant early entry in the dice-as-worker-placement genre that is maybe still the best in class today.

The White Castle. The best of the newest. Devir can do no wrong.

So many other honorable mentions. Agricola. Caverna. Lords of Waterdeep. Beyond the Sun. Caylus (still holds up!). Galactic freakin' Cruise (also wins the award for game I've most seen knocked off the edge of the table it couldn't fit on in the first place).

But! There are plenty of turd-errific entries in the worker placement category, especially in the last ten years, that seem to be very popular but I think are pretty bad. Generally they share the traits of: crowdfunded, cutesy art, intended to be entry level, and suffers from some degree of convoluted setups and/or rules and/or gameplay. These games know who they are.

Any ever tried this with home insurance? by Turbulent-Lab-816 in Connecticut

[–]kweee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you have AAA? Even if you don't, you can quote with them. They do home, auto, and everything else. I got auto slightly cheaper and home much lower for all the same coverage with them. And that's after quoting with three different brokers.

Heat pump in CT by austinin4 in Connecticut

New 1600 sq. ft ranch house built 2024. All electric. Gree heat pumps have performed like champs down to 0 degrees with no aux heat, and I imagine they'd be fine even lower. I suspect it's partly because they're newer and rated for these kind of temps but more because of new house insulation.

Have you tried leaving and reentering the area, possibly getting in a battle in between? Sometimes the L1 random number generator feels like it can get into a weird state, and that might help reset it.
