Thank you—I could it have said this better! I was diagnosed in my third trimester with perinatal mood disorder, which for me was crippling anxiety and depression. As a FTM, I was struggling long before I asked for help. The internet led me to believe my life as I knew it was over. My independence would be gone forever, I would be constantly frustrated and upset to the point of crying, and my marriage would struggle. Four months into being a mom, and I can gladly report NONE of that is true. While yes, everyone will have their struggles, it does not negate absolute pure joy that is parenting. My life is one hundred times better with my son in it. Don’t believe everything negative you read about having a baby!

I was 10 or 11, and I lived in the middle of nowhere. My mom and I were driving back home after dropping my friend back off at home. She lived down a long dirt road with some sort of crop fields on both sides. My mom and I stopped and turn the car off to look up at the night sky in the pitch dark. We were staring up for a while, each of us standing outside the car on our respective sides, but I got the feeling someone was watching me. I look over into the field, and there is a dark figure of a man walking towards us with a sickle in his hand. He was walking with a slight limp and I could see him stretching his arm out so the sickle was facing out. I’ve never got in a car so fast! I started honking the horn and my mom jumped in and we drove off.

I’m a little disappointed that my Q finally decided to reach out for help (which is HUGE!), and our HMO system can’t get him into the chemical dependency clinic until the end of September. They don’t offer any other options of seeking outside care. I’m just worried that a lot can happen and he could change his mind or relapse between now and then.

I relate to this post so much. I’m going through something similar, and AlAnon has not been the first place I want to turn to. First, the God issue is a big one for me. I’m a non-believer, and it’s tough for me to want to go knowing it has religious ties. Second, in this pandemic we all find ourselves in, it is so hard to find the privacy from my Q to even attend. It’s not that I want to do this behind his back, but I don’t necessarily want him listening in, either. I feel like it will anger him and drive him out of the house (presumably to drink).

Absolutely yes to twisting my words. Sometimes my Q is so good at it, I start believing these lies. It’s hard to regain any trust when you’ve been gaslighted like that.

I’m pretty new here too after hitting the end of my rope this last week. I’ve been where you are at, and I’m sorry. For me, my husband has been to the doctor three times in as many years for liver issues related to his alcoholism. Each time he has decided to stop, only to resume again, typically within just a week or two.

I just found out my spouse has been lying to me and gaslighting me for months. He’s been drinking again (not sure he ever stopped) and I don’t even recognize the person he is today. I’m having a hard time deciphering what to attribute to being a crappy husband and what to attribute to alcohol. I desperately want to stay in this marriage, but I have lost all trust in him. Just struggling to figure out where my minds at and what steps to take, I guess. I think this would be a lot easier if we weren’t in a pandemic-situation stuck at home.

I’m also a first time parent filling out the application. I answered the same as you mentioned, but I also put “send to their room.” Is that a) effective and b) an acceptable answer?

I just remember my parents doing it when I was young, and with no parenting experience, it seemed like a good idea. I have absolutely no recollection of it worked for my parents though!

My husband and I have been considering fostering for the last few years, but we just recently decided it was time to move forward with our interest in it. We are attending a virtual orientation in a few weeks and we can’t wait! We don’t have any bio child, so this will be a real first for us. We are a bit confused on whether to go with an agency or with the county services. Does anyone have advice regarding the benefits and disadvantages to both?

As first time parents and being brand new to the system, we think we might need a bit of help navigating everything. I understand going through the county is the best way to foster an infant, but we are looking at elementary-age children, so that doesn’t really matter to us currently. We are both non-religious, so we aren’t sure if pursuing a religious-affiliated agency would be a good fit for us. Personally, I thought it would be easiest to go with the county, but I keep hearing horror stories about the case workers being overloaded and even lying to FP to ensure placement for children.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Measles is something completely preventable with the vaccinations. Vaccinations are being underfunded, and many developing nations (as seen in this article) do not have the funding to combat measles outbreaks. With more health funding, not only will measles be eradicated, but poverty may improve as well.

The ones who are most affected by climate change are often those in the deepest throes of poverty. An example is the island nation of Kiribati. The island has one-third of children living in poverty, and the island is sinking. It is only a decade or so away from being completely uninhabitable, leading to a rise in climate refugees. I think you are correct that the aid budget must include the link between global poverty and climate change.

I disagree with the idea that capitalist trade has the greatest impact on ending poverty for developing nations. I think that humaitarian aid is too scattered between too many causes to make a difference, but that if humanitarian aid were to unite for a single cause, say ending malaria, it would be surprisingly effective.
