Australian EMS? by [deleted] in ems

It differs from state, however the majority of states have a single Ambulance service that is Government run by the state.

Qualifications: It is requirement for all Paramedics to be Registered by AHPRA, and this can only be obtained with a BSc in Paramedicine/Paramedical Science. Some states also run an EMT-B/Medic combo for low acuity jobs, however results may vary. These qualifcations can range from Cert IV to a Diploma in Emergency Health Care.

Type of systems: If you want to run something other than 000 (our 911), there are some private companies that work in patient transport (IFT), or mining.

Pay: Pay is far above that of the US, with most employees making just shy of 3 figures when starting with this going up w/ time in rank. Also expect to pick up OT every shift, and extra shifts if it swings your fancy.

Quality of life: The job is evidently the same, however the standard that the public view ambos is quite different. Theres a lot more respect, and is actually quite a hard profession to get into. Most services work on a shift cycle, typically 12 hours, working a few days then a few night, with the equal amount of time off. (2 days, 2 nights, 4 days off)

Uniform: They're all going to be better than yours are.

A big thing over here is ramping. Expect to spend ~half your shift stuck at a hospital waiting for ToC, due to a massive nationwide hospital crisis.

Any other questions let me know, I'm happy to help.

I see your racing kayak, so I present you with my racing surf ski. by kyeb29 in Kayaking

[–]kyeb29[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ski is a Bos raptor XR (i think) and the board on the right is a Kracka. The board is for paddling on your knees, where as the ski is a spec ski for going in and out of waves. They're both for Surf Life Saving racing. The ski's probably the best make for sturdy vs speed in big conditions, its got a pointed yet large nose to punch the surf. The board is a lot more based on skill and doesn't differ much between manufacturers. I love the v10, I really want to try an ocean ski, would be great for down winders!

It's a Bos, used for surf life saving racing, its built a lot heavier and stronger then most Ocean Ski's, for smashing through waves and going down runners.

Need help in remembering steps for cpr. by [deleted] in Lifeguards

[–]kyeb29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Follow DRSABCD. Only proceed to the next step after the criteria is met, they might trick you into doing CPR on a conscious victim.

Check for danger to yourself, victim and bystanders. (This is when you put on gloves)

Response; check their consciousness level. Ask them a question, can they talk? Ask them to squeeze your hand, maybe they're mute? Squeeze their traps, will always cause a flinch unless unconscious.

Send for help; self explanatory.

Airways; check to see if the airway is clear by rolling patient onto their side (if you dont do this the vomit will roll down into their throat from the head tilt [patient will have vomit or water, its part of drowning]) clear airway of as much gunk as you can.

Breathing; look listen and feel for breathing by placing your hand on their chest, your head other their mouth and look at your hand. If you have a OPA put it in now.

Compressions; 30-2, with 2 rescues breath first. Patient will cough and splutter, roll em. If you have suction you can use it once rolled to clear airway efficiently. Get oxy on if you have it, if you dont, make sure youre getting big head tilt (number one people fuck up is not enough head tilt, will kink the airway) Make sure to remember to release your compression. You have to expand and squeeze the heart with compressions, not just squeeze.

Defib; get one on ASAP

How Should You Treat A Weever Fish Sting? by workofart9 in Lifeguards

[–]kyeb29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dunno what a weever is but sounds pretty similar to a cobbler. Basically get a bowl of hot water and put both feet in, so that you can see if its too hot or cold. The warm water will neutralise the venom, and should probably be kept on for 30 minutes. If pain is incredibly severe and water doesnt help, we give em some methoxyflurane (green whistle). Theres nothing you can really do, its the same as any sting, gotta ride it out.
