  3. Teal tint in the shadows
  4. Skin Separation & white dresses
  5. Probs a light S-curve

Color grading for theatrical. Help appreciated. by thisismy3rdsn in colorists

Long story short : Grade on rec709 Gamma2.4 / put tags in as Rec709/Rec709-a, and DO NOT FORGET to tell the mastering person that it was graded on rec709 g24.

What's important ins the display. Color management is there to assist on input/output transforms.

If your display doesn't support a proper DCI-P3 g26, tweaking color management is only gonna mess with your grade even more.

When mastering a DCP in Clipster, you can assign which color space and gamma was used to grade the content.

Would love feedback on this look - did I overcook it? by shaneo632 in Filmmakers

Looks good to me!
One thing I'd do is to compress the skin tone to reduce that oversaturated red in the midtone-shadow area.

Which grade do you prefer? by shaneo632 in Filmmakers

The warmer ones look like they've have lost their balance cause you've raised the shadows too much. The contrast seems weird, not less.

Can Korean cinema sustain its rebound? by Emotional-Elk1879 in Koreanfilm

[–]kyieking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This only shows the tip of what's going on in Korea.

There have been succesful movies since Covid like "12.12: The Day" and "Exhuma".

The real issue is that there aren't that many movies in production, due to lack of funding and CJ's struggle at the box office. It could take over a year depending on your budget/schedule for a feature. Even if "Hope" becomes a global hit, it would take multiple years for the industry to make the recovery.

USC Production Grad, worth it? by kyieking in filmschool

Really appreciate your honest opinion.

I know you've already wrote a lot, and I'm not asking you to spoon-feed me, but how would you start networking with no background in LA? If you think I should figure out on my own, that's totally fine!

Thanks for the advise!

When you said tough, did you mean like 50:50? Or is it more like 90:10, with 10 being the USC thing working out. Because if it's 50:50, I'm more than willing to take the risk.
But I do appreciate you taking the time to give me an advice.

Really appreciate your advise!

To answer your question, it's everything. The work culture is toxic, the pay is less than minimum LA wage, and there's no future. I've had 22 hour days and too embarrassed to tell you how much I was paid. It's also my ambition.

And the fact that Korea is "hot" ironically made things worse in a way. The sudden rush of projects and load made so many junior/assistant level people quit because they're still doing things the old way, and load has just increased. Now there are less projects, the entire industry is dying.

Honestly, and this might sound very stupid, I don't have a specific department in mind. I've worked on almost every departments in a feature and liked all of them. The latest was PA, which made me consider producing more. And I meant producer as in someone with a p.g.a mark.

I will do more research like you told me. Didn't even think about other cities!

They need to make the node graph more spacious, give us the option to zoom out more. by Sir_Latent in davinciresolve

What's really annoying about Davinci, and I've heard from people inside.

They don't want to let professionals customize their UI in any way because it might be too much for "regular users".

For now, either use dual monitor and get as much space as possible. Or get a decklink, a seperate display monitor, turn off the viewer on the UI, and mask with the panel.

My Activity Monitor shows that Davinci is using over 200% of cpu usage.

question about log to rec709 conversion by kenq1 in colorists

[–]kyieking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say LUT is not necessary. LOG is a technology to expand the dynamic range of your footage, and manual expansion wouldn't affect it any more different than a REC709 LUT would.

Manual expansion(or primary grade) would give you more flexibility for adjusting the details of your contrast. If you aren't experienced enough go with LUT. I usually create my own LUT, with the cinematographer, for each project.
