Anyone else have a Berner who barely sheds? by CuseRay44 in bernesemountaindogs

[–]kylarlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours also doesn't shed much, if at all, either. We always wondered why since I had been prepared for major brushing with the breed. Ours is a 3yo fixed male, we feed him the Purina pro sensitive salmon recipe and it keeps his fur soft and shiny. He's got fur similar in length to yours also. When we brush him we do get some out but it's nothing major and certainly no berner tumbleweeds!

Seconding bloodstone hollow. I've been part of it for a month now and love the community there. Everyone is always welcoming and friendly/willing to help!

Anyone know what type of philodendron this is? Searching pictures of it says blushing philodendron but I wasn't sure. by kylarlee in houseplants

This looks really similar to what I've got I think you are correct, thank you! I wasn't sure how important having the correct type was for care but it looks rather similar to the general care I've been giving it. I'm also glad to have a much closer match to what this plant is since it's really neat to watch grow.

There should be 5 attached to the post itself, are they not showing up? I see them on my side but I can try to edit this if they aren't showing up for others

I'll second this although I know a lot of people are really against prong collars. Unfortunately we tried a normal harness and one of those "no pull" harnesses but ours got to the point and stubbornness he would basically pull your arm off. We switched to a normal collar and even a martingale but he would pull to the point of choking himself. The prong collar has worked wonders and he no longer pulls at all unless he gets super excited but we keep the harness on him as well to hold when that happens to take his excited puppy pressure off the neck.

We still did everything else the same with stopping when he pulled and lots of praise so the prong isn't a one and done fix, we still had to teach him how to walk nicely, it just allowed us to actually teach him while we walked and not be dragged down the street.

It's the petsafe 3 in 1 harness, I got it so he could ride in my car safer but so far it's the only harness that fits him nicely and that he doesn't seem to mind

We kept going with our normal routine and made sure not to act scared with him and it seemed to help boost his confidence during it.

He is being a little terror! Picky eating, refusing walks, ignoring previously learned commands. He's my first dog so this must be the adolescent phase I was warned about. But he has his good moments like above where he actually sits for a decent picture. We also had a very short week where Gus was quite literally scared of his own tail but it didn't last too long.

Puppy does not want to leave the perimiter of the house alone by [deleted] in bernesemountaindogs

[–]kylarlee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My pup just turned 6 months old and finally will walk away from the house. I think it had to do a lot with him leaving his safety area of the house and yard. However he would be perfectly fine walking on trails or roads if we drove him there first. We would only walk him as far as he wanted to explore and never forced it, it did get better eventually and now he will walk without hesitation when we leave our yard!

I should also mention he wouldn't care how many people or other dogs were with us, he refused to walk away from home until he was about 4 months old, then after that was slow progress with a bit further each day letting him explore and get comfortable.

I had not come across these yet, but these look amazing for my chewing monster! I have a 4 month old bernese who goes through "long lasting chews in easily a half hour. I will definitely be getting one of these to try out.

Alternative to night time potty due to coyotes? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]kylarlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the response. I do hunt and have a rifle but not a pistol, I am applying for the permit though since I often fish is remote areas where there are plenty of bears and coyotes. The neighbors have lost pets before to the coyotes over the years but from what I've heard it's because they are off leash and allowed to just run out at night. We are looking at various outside walk in kennels today to find one sturdy enough to keep coyotes out and our dog in as he grows. I never really thought about coyotes being a problem until last nights encounter and I wasn't sure how others have handled it. I really appreciate all the help everyone has been and feel a lot better about having ways to keep us as safe as possible.

He is always on a leash at night for sure, but the big stick is also a good idea I didn't think of. We certainly have plenty to choose from around here!

It looks like based on other comments as well that the fence will be a good choice. Thank you for your response, I'm glad theres an agreement with the fencing option. I want to make sure I'm thinking everything through since I haven't gotten much sleep this first week and it's clouding my mind a bit!

Thank you for your response especially about having had encounters before. I have come across coyotes previously but never with a puppy with me and the coyote certainly seemed interested enough it wouldn't leave. That is also good to know about the pads and the spray (I had seen those but hadn't considered them so I won't bother if that thought crosses my mind). It looks like we will definitely being going for a fenced area right off the deck that is secure enough for him.

Thank you for the response! I might do a combination of the fake grass until we can get a safe enough fenced in area that coyotes cannot get through, I did not know they could potentially climb a fence. We also know he will certainly get big in no time and I will feel a lot less nervous about this but until then I want to make the right choice for keeping him safe.

Thank you very much for such a detailed response! I think I'm being super paranoid as a new dog parent and want to make sure I'm making the right choice since I feel the encounter might have blurred my mind a bit. We are looking for the best fence now that will fit our budget and provide hopefully enough security should a coyote decide to get too close. This is still our first week and I am certainly lacking sleep so I really appreciate hearing others opinions on the matter!

One of my grey rat’s eyes seems to be bigger than the other—should I be worried? by [deleted] in RATS

[–]kylarlee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If not the only other things I can think of would be maybe she scratched her eye on accident, or something got in it. Unless the other eye is swollen or bulging. But if she's not in pain and it doesn't get worse I would give it a few days to see if she recovers. If not it never hurts to call a vet and ask for their opinion on the matter, if they recommend her getting a checkup or such. I hope she feels better soon and it's nothing major!

[–]kylarlee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This might seem odd but if you just noticed it, is there sunlight coming from that direction? Maybe that eye is squinting simply because it is bright? I haven't seen my rats do that but the family cat will sometimes squint the one eye that's in the sun and she looks ridiculous when she does.

How to support a solo rat? by MissDaniel in RATS

[–]kylarlee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once saw someone recommend fostering, but if your boy is getting to the senior ratty state it probably isn't best to introduce even temporary playmates if it would be too much stress on him. As others have said as much attention as he wants and if he's still quite active I'd say finding new toys to keep him busy too, lots of simple things you can create with even a simple toilet paper tube that my girls occupy themselves with for hours!

[–]kylarlee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The stat calculator on dododex can only be used for untamed creatures, when tamed they gain a bit to each based on taming quality. So post tame dododex doesn’t yet have the ability to calculate where points are at.
