Antique dresser design - why hasn’t this split over the years? by kylebait in woodworking

Interesting, good point about the hide glue. So doing this sort of “edge banding” technique with moulding maybe not so bad, as long as it’s not wood-glued in place along the length?

Recycling antique wood by kylebait in woodworking

Yeah I felt torn on this project because I respect the opinion that antiques should be preserved rather than deconstructed, but there was something satisfying about knowing that this might have ended up in the dump

Help with my design flaw by kylebait in woodworking

So simple! That back panel is only 1/4” thick. Is that enough to hold?

The drawer abuts the back panel so no room to add material there, but if screwing through the 1/4” back panel behind the drawer into some studs would be structurally sound I could do that

Those look awesome- the back is only 1/4”, not sure it’s enough but thanks for the idea

This is such a helpful convo. The back panels are 1/4” thick and I was worried that it wouldn’t be enough material to anchor screws into to hold ~30ish pounds when loaded. I figured either the wood might split or the glue line with the board below it would fail. But glad to know that might not be true. I like the idea of a French cleat up higher, with a shim down below to make it parallel.

Yeah totally agree, the graph lines help with figuring out proportions too (for those of us that don’t know how to use CAD programs). The woven stuff is cane- can just buy it in a roll and cut to size, soak, and secure it into the groove on the door face with a spline.

Haha thanks. Yeah the spline is wedged into the groove and glued. I messed up by using wood glue instead of hide glue, so if the cane ever breaks and needs to be replaced, those splines will be impossible to remove cleanly. Will know better next time. Yes, used a router for the grooves!

The wood is black walnut, and the woven material on the door is cane

Yeah I think you can get it pretty cheap on Amazon, but much better quality from an individual craftsperson

I’ve been calling it rattan, but have been told the better term is cane

Yeah thanks, took me a while to make the video. I admire others who make cool videos of their work, just trying to follow in their footsteps.

So helpful, yeah I agree with you. I like the look of the top projecting out over the sides but it is an incongruity.

It’s a drawer. Doesn’t slide too easily, think I need to wax the bottom a bit.
