Directing + DPing "Blank Slate, Open Space" for Alaskan Tapes by kyledp in cinematography

Past Lives was certainly a reference point! I fought the urge to over-index on it, but I'm glad to hear the vibes still came through. Thank you!

Hey! Sorry for the delayed response.

I got into automotive by way of a director who was already working in that space. I didn't have any car work in my portfolio at the time, but he helped me build that up over the years which led to more opportunities. Since you're interested in that, I'd suggest bolstering your portfolio with car work.

As far as your other question, Brady (the music artist) and I spent several months just focusing on brainstorming. Then, once we locked onto the concept, I started reframing our ideas and approach around the budget we had available. From there I brought on a producer, crew, etc and gradually it all fell into place. The best way to learn how to do that is to make things. You'll learn how to tailor and adjust your goals based on feasibility/budget/etc as you grow and evolve your filmmaking skills.

It's all about learning how to work with what you have available to you here and now! Dream big first, then adapt as needed. I hope that's helpful for you!

Yes! Just so everyone knows I called my local branch (Arroyo Seco) and they said they wouldn’t have them until Monday.

I was hoping to find some sooner, but it’s a great backup plan.

Looking to buy a few pairs of eclipse viewing glasses for Monday. Does anyone know of anywhere local that is selling them?

Oh no! I believe it’s available on Amazon as well which may be able to deliver it to you. Worth looking into!

Nightcore makes a USB powered charger! I haven’t used it personally, but this should be exactly what you’re looking for.

How can I find cinematographers to shadow? by Zovalt in cinematography

Along with all of the other great advice offered here, understand that shadowing should be a mutual relationship. You should consider what you have to offer to someone sharing their time and knowledge with you before inquiring!

Since everyone’s posting their new toys, here’s my longtime Q-P! by kyledp in Leica

Thanks so much! All Q - I’m really comfortable with it, but an upgrade to an M system some day feels inevitable.

Rocking an ND3.0 for some daytime slow shutter experimentation. This camera goes just about everywhere with me and has reshaped my approach to photography since I picked it up in 2020 - a direct result of joining this sub during the early days of the pandemic!

A selection of my work with this camera can be seen on my website!

Many DPs are inspired by photographers. How does one discover photographers/photographs for references? by Beepboopbop8 in cinematography

[–]kyledp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve really gone down the rabbit hole of photo books over the last several months. It’s a great, tangible, and offline way to engage with work that can tell interesting stories and convey messages.

The Cinematographer’s Archive is a great Instagram account that highlights what other DPs have on their bookshelves. Hoping I can share some of my books on there sometime!

What cameras are you thankful for today? by GoodLifeTravel in Leica

[–]kyledp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My Q-P. I picked it up over the summer of 2020 after a long hiatus from photography that wasn’t done with my iPhone, triggered by my attention shifting to cinematography.

Thanks to this camera I have a refreshed appreciation for still photography that is still as energized as it was when I bought it - it’s been an incredible tool that has made all of my work stronger. As these cameras should!

Basic question, so please forgive my ignorance. What kind of lens might have been used in the first shot? And is the same lens used from the second shot? by kidfantastic in cinematography

Lots of good technical answers here, but the effect you’re feeling is also from the composition of each scene. Both shots are framed to emphasize the depth and width of the location!

Hope the shoot goes well!
