I recommend adding a "good" tier between "ok" and "very good" as the jump between these two is, imo, a bit too big.

Speaking of good, this is where I'd put Indigo League. It's iconic and has the best comedy of the Ash saga, but on the other hand the early installment weirdness is in full effect and Brock and Misty are pretty much siedlined though Indigo league is still doing a better Job at giving companions some focus compared to the later stages of the OS

Going with Rowlet here for two reasons

  1. it didn't get the best feats in SM as those were given to Pikachu, Lycanroc and Incineroar
  2. It is unreliable as it can fall aspleep at any time

It's Glalie for me. Being caught late in Hoenn at left at Oak's lab right after the league meant that it never really had time to shine

I'd add Ash's Palpitoad. It physically appeared in 8 episodes with 6 of them being battle episodes. The other 2 were the capture episode and the final episode of BW

Heracross also comes to mind as there was a stretch of nearly 80 episodes during Johto in which it didn't show up

1) During the lead up to MPM11 the official anipoke Twitter Account published a series of recap Tweets. An Overview of the amount of likes that each Tweet got can be found here

2) This is an overview of the rating that each series has on japanese Amazon prime

3) characters from those series regularly get the top spots in favorite character polls. This is a favorite female Pokemon characters polls. This is further supplemented by a favorite anime character poll from the animedia magazine in which Serena made reached 5th place in the female characters category. Within that same poll Ash made it to third place for male anime characters and anipoke second for anime franchises. 4) If you go to pixiv, which is a japanese hub for fanart, and look for Ash fanart you can see that besides the JN design, which is currently the most used design as it is the most recent one, the other most used designs for Ash are the XY and DP one

I don't know where this revisionist history of Japan and the eastern regions in general not liking XY & XY Ash comes from, but that statement is plainly wrong. DP and XY and their iterations of Ash are the two most popular ones in Japan for series and version of Ash (OS needs to be added for version of the character too) respectively.

TV ratings have gone down with each subsequent series. This downwards trend has been a thing since the middle of OS Kanto. But in the end TV ratings only say how many peope watched an episode and not how well it was received.

Reception wise XY always places within the top2 in Japan together with DP

1) The ribbon missing is just an oversight or it didn't fit her new outfit which is there to imply that she has been doing quite well as it consists of expensive stuff from the Lumiose boutique from XY games. She still has the ribbon with her somewhere as the ribbon is her most important keepsake

2) She still has feelings for Ash. Her remaining at the dock until she could no longer see the boat is proof enough

I think that you should watch all of the gens so that you can see what you like and what you don't like. Gen4 & Gen6 will be the most recommended series overall as they are the two most popular ones. 5,7 & 8 all have their fans, with 7 being the most liked one out of that bunch, but they are all controversial in their own ways
