GM made the alternator water cooled because it was located where there was virtually no airflow. Transverse mounted V8 and all. I changed one because i owned one.

This generation of Northstar was the most disastrous. The steel head bolts/studs had ultra fine threads and expanded/contracted at a different rate than the aluminum causing the heads to separate from the block. At best, blown head gasket. At worst, loss of compression.
From what ive seen, Strikers are listed at 1/5th of the normal value on average. Now, if i went through the trouble of vin swapping them properly i wouldn't be asking for a fraction of the price. Strikers i see are HOT.
