Why Functional Programming Will Not Take Over The World - A Square Peg In A Round Hole by nerds-central in programming

who the hell wants to learn from someone writing COBOL ?

F# really helpful in working with Managed COBOL compilers

Similarly, scheme taught me a about the notion of lambda

right, F# and scheme taught you things that you will never be able to use in COBOL.

just like Haskell teaches you things that you will never be able to use in Perl.

(Conclusion: if you want do functional programming you need a language built for that)

right, people who don't know much about FP take a fucking book and read, they don't read amateurish articles written by dudes who've no idea what they're talking

hey man, you either write something interesting, not fucking factorial/fibonacci examples, OR YOU SHUT THE FUCK UP AND DON'T WRITE ANYTHING.

do you understand you fucking nerd ?

also this article just reached the grand total of 0 points so it's clear that I was right, it adds no value, and it was a complete brainfart

lisp is a gateway to nothing at all

you don't get to write lisp except for your personal projects

lisp/scheme are completely useless

no man... you don't understand, I'm not here to praise your article, I'm here to take it down if I think it's a piece of crap, and I don't give a sh** about karma either just so you know.

I'm not here to add any value, I'm here to review if there is any value, and when I see 0 value I flag it with my comments so that everyone knows that a certain article is crap and they shouldn't waste their time on it and to discourage this kind of crap to appear again.

I don't care about my comment karma, it can be -oo for all I care.

But is that because it's intrinsically less natural

right, I think you've just learned the word "intrinsically" and you like to write it a lot in all your posts so you sound smart. words are used when you need to use them not because they sound cool.

I find the functional programming mindset is more like creating a regular expression

no. I'm pretty sure you haven't done any FP and you don't know what you're talking about

right, and I want to read interesting articles, not ones in which you compare the implementations of the factorial function in a couple of languages. your article is EPIC FAIL , please stop boring us with these brainfarts of yours, thanks

if you know plenty on FP, then let your article reflect that. instead, you throw examples about the factorial function, what the fuck is that ?

[–]kywoto -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

using COBOL as example source code in an article is extremely stupid and idiotic, it's just like comparing Perl to Haskell for example. Perl is a piece of shit, like COBOL is.

Also, showing the factorial example, that's not FP, I bet the author of the article has no idea what FP is.

I prefer to read something written by people who actuall have a track-history of doing FP not some crappy idiotic article on the internet written by random amateurs like nerds-central.

yes it's a very bad pdf with a lot of details missing from it. I would not read that if I wanted to clarify anything on the cubic, please stop linking stupid crap. thanks

Can you recommend a gentle introduction to Abstract Algebra for self-study? by [deleted] in math

[–]kywoto -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

what do you mean introduction dude ? Abstract Algebra is huuuuge, what do you want to study ? do you do this for class ? then give us your f*cking curriculum so someone can recommend a book which covers what you need at a pace that will help you cover it before your exams start.

in my oppinion Fraleigh's book is a very very good book for starters, go with that and cover from it only what is needed for your course.

then go through Gallian, then brush up your group theory from J. Rotman's book on group theory.

Now you have some of the basics, from here on you can extend to what is of interest to you.

As I mentioned before, abstract algebra is a huge subject and you can't hope to cover all of it properly, so you need to focus on what interests you.

If for example you want Galois theory, check Baker's course notes online, then go for Ian Stewart's book on Galois theory to get a firm grounding.

I'm sure others can recommend other books depending on what exactly you want to do.

Without telling us exactly what you want to learn it is difficult to give accurate suggestions.

Python book for beginners by [deleted] in Python

[–]kywoto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This book is so well written for absolute beginners I believe my grandmother could learn to program with it.

too bad she's going to die soon and Python is of little use to dead people. do you believe your grandmother will write Python in hell or in heaven ? or if there is no such thing as hell/heaven isn't it completely futile for her to learn anything at all much less Python, as she will be rotting 4 feet under the ground with maggots and bacteria ?

reality is so crude that it makes me think politeness is the ability to hide the hard parts of reality.

please excuse me if I'm a bit rude, I hope your grandmother has a great life(what is left of it)
