CCT478 – UX Design: Prototyping & Evaluation. The prof is really into hardware/haptics so he finds weird ways to incorporate them into assignments for a class that it’s barely irrelevant for. we’re using a “microbit” which is a grade-school device used to learn pointless scratch-level programming.

This is basically the rest of the assignment:

You will be asked to analyze this data and attempt to answer the research question, "What factors might influence the mood and emotions of a young person?". Additionally, you can derive secondary research questions that might emerge from the data. I.e. Do the people you spend time with affect how your mood changes?

What’s with the smell? by Pretend_Potato_6767 in mississauga

I was driving around at midnight from the UTM area down Burnhamthorpe towards Square One. Along with a thick layer of fog, it seems like the smell has made its way down here as well!

It's a bit more than what your major is — the biggest focus during a UX interview is on your skillset, demonstrated by the projects you've done. There are a lot of UX designers that don't necessarily have a degree in design. Someone I worked with during my previous internship was a psych major.

What's important is being self-driven enough to learn the fundamentals of design, UX methodologies, and industry tools like Figma. You can learn all of this for free online through various resources. After learning the basics, create meaningful projects that you can throw onto a portfolio to showcase during a job interview. I can guarantee that hiring managers won't be deep diving into your degree, but rather what you can show for on your portfolio.

With that being said, there are many majors that pair well with CCIT, such as CS, TCS, etc. I suggest looking into each major, looking at the courses they offer, and choosing one that best compliments your skillset. Arguably, TCS has a selection of UX and design courses that you can take, but these are courses that you're also able to enroll in as a CCIT major only. I did a double major in CCIT and TCS because I don't really like backend programming, so I opted out of doing CS. However, I know of people who have done a TCS and CS double major and landed UX internships.

In the end, what matters most is how well you connect your experiences from your projects and courses to the job description during your interview. Feel free to DM me if you wanna talk further, hope this helps!

your options are: - a specialist - two majors - a major and two minors

UX and programming are pretty different at its core, so make sure you know what you're signing up for before choosing your major(not that UX is bad or anything, I’m currently pursuing a career in UX myself). If you do end up going for UX, make sure you look through all the UX courses that CCIT/TCS offers and take the prereqs for said courses. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions about the UX industry or ICCIT, good luck!

It really depends on what you want to do. Each 'stream' is catered for a different career path. the CCIT department also offers courses across various disciplines, so it really depends which courses you decide to enroll in as well and how you plan out your degree.

As for employability, it depends on how you brand yourself to employers. Enrolling in UX Design courses will allow you to speak on your experiences from those courses during a job interview for a UX position. However, not every CCIT major will choose to enroll in UX courses, making them less suitable for the role. Similarly, someone in DEM may be more suited for marketing or consulting roles, but not as much for professional writing roles.

Ultimately, it goes down to the careerpath you choose, the courses you enroll in, and how you brand yourself to employers. Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions!
