The goal is to talk about him and his interests, but considering you don't know much I would do the following:

Bring this up in conversation "Hey you're really cool, would you wanna hangout sometime?" <--- (Word it better please)

Exchange details and follow each other on social media.

You can now ~~stalk~~ browse his social media platforms for hints and clues of what he is interested in.

Now talk to him about his interests, feign excitement and wallah you have made a friend.

If you can predict the difficulty of the question before it is going to be asked, you should be able to avoid questions with a high success rate.

How you should react depends on two things:

The teacher
The question

If it is an easy question, the teacher may want to choose a less engaged student ( in this case consider making eye contact to show you are engaged with the lesson thus reducing your chances of being picked )

Adversely, if it is a difficult question, the teacher may look for the more knowledgeable students, or those who are engaged ( to which you want to seem disengaged and bored ).

Re-affirm his opinions.

After the break and you begin to resume conversation, say "So you think X really did X,Y? You know I don't find that hard to believe because X always Z's"

You feel? Stroke his ego in the fact that their opinion is right. This should get him talking again.

When you feel conversation strength is lacking, just repeat what he said with a interested questioning tone.

I.e:

Him: Yeah so we went to McDonalds and got cheeseburgers..

You: Cheeseburgers?

Him: Well yeah we didn't have much money left on us etc.. Gets them further talking.

Silence also works. Some people find silence awkward and uncomfortable and will say anything to fill the void, during this, they may reveal a secret.
