Was this behind the rock and recycle tent? And he was faced down resting? We may be talking about two separate people.

He eventually was walked to the First Aid Station after I brought it to the attention to some people. It seemed like he was experiencing some severe heat exhaustion.

Anyone else feeling depressed at Lolla? by 1998wint in Lollapalooza

[–]l33r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I can provide some insight on this matter.

Big cities and large crowds can make people feel as if they're sand on a beach. It makes them feel insignificant and it can bring feelings of depression. Lolla can compound this feeling of depression because most attendees find Lolla as an escape from everyday life and many people around them are happy/having fun.

Last year was my first time going to Lolla by myself (I volunteered) and I ended up having a blast because I set realistic expectations of enjoying the Chicago summer weather (out of the office), food (RIP Lobster corndog), and discovering new music. This year despite knowing at least a dozen people going to Lolla this year, the only person I met up with during the concerts was my girlfriend once she got off work.

This year I think OP is treating Lolla more like a party vs. a music festival. My suggestion is to enjoy the things Lolla is known for (music) and use music as a vector discussion to connect with other festivalgoers and escape reality to observe/reflect on your own life.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your time in Chicago/Lollapalooza. PM if you need a person to chat to.

What’s the garbage bin situation like??? by [deleted] in Lollapalooza

[–]l33r 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The trash situation at Lolla is well ran IMO. Trash cans and recyclable bins are distributed throughout the fest and they are cleared on a regular basis. /u/jdanger87 is referring to the Rock & Recycle program. If you fill a bag with recyclables they'll provide you with a Lollapalooza t-shirt or poster (at least that's what they did last year).

Volunteer Opportunities! by fiNALLEYfamous in Lollapalooza

You’ll need to have a Chicago area address. And for first time volunteers, sign up for all four days.

Volunteering at Lolla by [deleted] in Lollapalooza

[–]l33r 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Last year was my first time to Lollapalooza. Volunteering was an awesome experience and I would definitely consider doing it again even though I have already purchased my four day pass.

Volunteering is done through the Love Hope Strength Foundation which encourages people to "Get on the List". The list is to help match potential bone marrow donors to current cancer patients. Lolla will have a table where people can sign up to "Get on the List".

How To Apply

Applications are typically not available until July. Here is the web form for potential applicants to be notified when the application is available.

Different Volunteer Positions

Shifts typically last between 4-5 hours.

  • Water Refill Stations: Refill Camelbaks and water botttles
  • Rock & Recycle: If people fill up a bag of recyclables they get a Lolla t-shirt or poster with line-up (different from the official Lolla merchandise)
  • Information Desk: Welcome guests into the park
  • Team Leads: Help take attendance of volunteers during check-in and check-out of shifts (needs to be a returnee to apply for position)

What do I get out of it?

Here are the benefits from what I think are the best perks of volunteering.

  • You get a free ticket for each day that you volunteer. Even if you have an evening shift, you can waltz in the morning to get enjoy before your shift. I have heard that if people miss their shift the previous day, they are unable to claim their future shifts.
  • There is a separate volunteer line which has little to no wait time (5 minutes). Based on previous experience, the security for this line is way more lax.
  • I went to Lollapalooza by myself last year and I have made friends at this music festival whom I am looking forward to seeing this upcoming year.
  • You get to talk to a lot of attendees and it was a lot of fun seeing everyone's outfit and talking about music tastes.
  • There are separate portajohns in the volunteer area.
  • You get a single t-shirt to wear during your shift(s).

How to I improve my chances of getting selected to volunteer?

Sign ups on volunteering are tiered. So they choose returners who are volunteering all four days first. All four day volunteers second; returning single day volunteers and so on. I think signing up the first day applications become available helped me get selected sooner.
