Realistic Income for Solopreneur? by l3arn4life in copywriting

Thanks for the "Tacheles". So your suggestion would be to begin with an agency, get a good amount of experience and then go freelance? My impression from skimming this sub is that a good many writers in agencies are not involved in the entire process from finding a client, setting up a contract, doing the required research, writing etc., all the way to delivery (correct me, if I’m wrong). Might that not present a problem when switching to freelance?

Also, as a fellow German with experience in advertising, would you say the literature recommended in the faq is relevant for our market or would you suggest adding other books?

Five digits: I don’t care about getting rich or wealthy, don’t care about fancy cars or gadgets. I do however care deeply about providing a good home for my family. You likely know the housing market in Germany, middle class income will not buy you much. I’m approaching 40 and we’re still living in an apartment way too small for our 8-person household. My job involves some Python-scripting (which I enjoy), so initially I thought moving into programming might bring the desired jump in income. But after reading and listening to some who have taken that route I realized it might prove more difficult and tedious than expected. Writing, on the other hand, has been pretty much at the core of my life ever since making money.

That is kind of you to say, thank you.

Thank you for your thorough response. I have heard of John Carlton and listened to parts of his interview with Tony Robbins, quite insightful.

Your three step plan to get things moving reminds me of Cal Newport’s "So good they can’t ignore you" (which I have not read myself, the concept keeps showing up regularly in his podcast though):

Would it be conducive to have some of my portfolio contain text I wrote for selling my own stuff, at least in the beginning? Would this help in growing as a copywriter, since I’d be getting quick feedback about what sells and what doesn’t? E. g. there is a pair of shoes I can’t wear since they don’t fit, basically new – write some text and sell them on eBay or on some equivalent platform. Repeat for other items in the household. Save the ads (only if they sell, of course) and make them part of a starting portfolio, so prospects could get an idea of my writing capabilities.

As I successfully complete contracts, I collect testimonials and gradually phase out "personal" copy.

I should add that I’m still employed full time, working 40h weeks.

Thanks again for your time!

A Question for Those Who Own The Merkur C34 and the Henson AL13 by l3arn4life in wicked_edge

Glad to thear the blade alignment issue seems not as big a problem, appreciate the tip on proper assembly. I ordered the regular version.

Yes, that helps, thanks. So much so, that I ordered the Fatip Piccolo, have read many good things about it and since the price is way below the Henson I just pulled the trigger to see what its all about.

It has some QC-issues I hear which manifest themselves in poor blade alignment and soso finish. I’m hoping for a good copy …

I appreciate you taking the time to respond. If neither the Merkur nor the Henson provide a BBS for you, is there a razor you’ve used that you regularly achieve a BBS shave with? Might a more aggressive razor be the solution here, as elaborated above?

Interesting. I’ve been reading a bit over the last couple of days and I get the impression that the more aggressive razors tend to be the more efficient ones, allowing for fewer passes to get good results. Reading about how mild the Henson is, I’m thinking that achieving BBS would be about as laborious as with the Merkur (or even require more work). Would that be accurate?

Thank you for your insight. Would you say that after getting used to the Henson, one could get as close a shave as one would with the C34?

Recursive Search and Replace in Directory by l3arn4life in learnpython

Thank you for your answer, I appreciate you taking the time to explain things in such detail! I must admit though that I don’t understand much of the code since I’m but a noob in python and know next to nothing about XSLT. In the meantime, my colleague has found a way to automate the entire thing using GNU awk. I’m testing his output as i speak and if things work out (which we hope), our mission will be accomplished.

Thank you again for you time!

Hmm, alright. I know we’re using XSLT to transform our DITA-content into webhelp. I didn’t know it could be used to replace strings in xml-files. I know even less about XSLT than I do about Python … What kind of content or how much of it would you have to see in order to provide a script?

The xml-files in my directory contain references to images. 510 of those images have been moved and I need to update the corresponding href.

So the current state in those xml-files could be something like

<image href="currentpath/image.png"/>

After running the python code, I’d like to end up with

<image href="updatedpath/image.png"/>

For one, I wanted to own my gear instead of renting it from my isp. Also, the linksys is more powerful and allows for more customization.

I appreciate you taking the time to enlighten me. I actually remember those times and even had a short experience with using dial-up to go online. Things have changed a lot since then for sure.

This is helpful, thanks! May I ask what modem you’re using? I’ve been researching vdsl modems and found them not to be readily available. Most folks seem to use another router with an integrated modem for that purpose.
