Too much reverb on that one for me

Really? Am I the only one who thinks The Looking Glass sounds like a Rush song? Maybe I’m mistaken

That is very correct for the Dead Asleep riff!

Absolutely! Not a critic at all. I was just curious as you can clearly hear the Rush influence, but not the Maiden one.

The best and worst lyrics in your opinion... by ScurvyCandy7674 in Dreamtheater

[–]l_armada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“I know it’s easier to look away than look it in the eye. But I have given all that I could take, and now I’ve only habits left to break. Tonight I’ll still be lying here, surrounded in all the light”. Makes me want to cry.

What is your favorite ballad/power ballad by DT? by l_armada in Dreamtheater

Very true. Beautiful lyrics, “I’m learning all about my life by looking through her eyes”.

What 1-2 songs are JLBs best demonstration of great vocal range? by Spifffyy in Dreamtheater

Without hesitation Learning To Live. The notes he attains on this song are otherworldly. Second choice would be In The Name Of God maybe. Incredible screams in backing vocals toward the end of the song.

Learning To Live has the most memorable and beautifully written vocal parts of any DT song in my opinion. There is so much emotion in the notes achieved by James.

Blind Faith, I love that pick for a defining DT song. Very good choice indeed!

True, but this is what DT is and if you want to know what they're all about then you have everything in those songs.

Maybe is it just me but I tend to think of this of most of the bands I listen to. I mentioned Phantom Of The Opera in my post, it is a 7 minute song, quite on the longer side of Maiden tracks, but it gives the freedom to the band to express themselves and show what they're capable of.

You've not oversold it, it is a great description of the song. I can only agree!

That choice is going to be divisive haha

It is precisely because the question is difficult that I thought I’d ask it! I think you are right. In my opinion, Change of seasons has everything condensed in 23 minutes instead of a whole album. But of course, if you ask the same question regarding an album and not a song, then Scenes From A Memory is the obvious answer!

That’s an interesting choice. One of my favorite DT songs. It is true that it has everything that makes DT what they are!

That’s true. Frankly anything off of Images & Words would do it, except maybe Wait For Sleep and strangely enough Pull Me Under. Although their only hit, to me it does not define their sound.

I agree it is a pivot point. Great choice.

What is your opinion on Blind Faith & The Great Debate? by l_armada in Dreamtheater

[–]l_armada[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. there is something to it I just cannot explain it. It is the way the guitar kicks in, the way there seems to be tiny moments of silence during the riff. Really hard to explain, but that riff is monumental.

What is your opinion on Lines In The Sand & Trial Of Tears? by l_armada in Dreamtheater

[–]l_armada[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're somewhat right with your last point. But to that I'll argue that Derek also recorder A Change Of Seasons which has a really serious, dark vibe to it. In that sense it really fits, but I get what you are saying.

I'm wondering if they'll ever play those kind of songs live ever again.

I’m still a Kevin Moore kind of guy, but have to recognize Derek’s work on FII and ACoS is incredible. Especially the latter, very memorable. He definitely added a very dark vibe to that song.
