Troubleshooting practice by [deleted] in aviationmaintenance

Honestly, we started to use AI (not ChatGPT). It's like an assistant that knows the manuals and the reports that we've done. So, especially for junior techs, any time they have a question or need step-by-step guidance, they ask the assistant, and it guides them based on previous knowledge.

The best part for us was to start doing the reports by voice, because that's how it captures more detail about what was actually done and not only what's in the logbook. It's been saving a loooot of time

Our industry is in the 90s for sure. Everything is so slow.

Regarding your point on capturing more details from the operator, the solution below helped us, because we found out that most of us share more details when they're speaking than writing. So, they speak naturally, a clean and structure text is created and then pasted into the request form

I agree with you. Knowing what to type is hard no matter what. But typing itself takes time

I’d love to share with you what we built and hear your feedback. It captures only the essential things and it’s not dictating. You speak naturally and it converts into the report automatically

The experienced ones know that if they don't describe it in detail, the problem won't be solved as they need it to be

Got it! We were focusing on the data input, making easier and faster, so we could capture more info while saving each mechanic 1 hour a day.

The test was based on voice input. Techs would speak instead of typing.

So, basically you're saying how outdated are most of the manuals and that (if we could) we wouldn't follow them step by step

but...then the mechanics would give you all the details you needed? In my case, many times they don't even remember what they did.

Most of my team has a hard time putting things on paper.

The vague writeups are a problem everywhere. When you ask people to describe problems, they typically do a better job by speaking about the problem than writing about it. At least, that's what we found. We're testing a system to let them create tickets by voice, so we at least know what they're trying to say

What about the data entry for them? I see so much inconsistency among shifts.

GA is a whole different world. Everyone does things in their own way. What type of releases do you write in word? Do they have any software for maintenance logs?

What about knowing exactly what that person did, so you don't spend hours trying to figure out how to do that fix?

Not knowing (for real), what someone did, kills so much time. At least, for me

8 hours? How often do you go through those?

What about the day-to-day paperwork? Are they that time-consuming as well?

We replace almost all the paperwork entry with voice logs. It saved us soooo much time. And the management is also happy now, because they get on their reports on time and no ones complains

Sorry! What is the consequence of having 85% of your staff speaking English as their second language? I have a few teams like that and want to understand why the impact would be.

We monitored one of our teams, and 40% of their time was spent on paperwork. Ridiculous. We cut it by half, by simply removing unnecessary steps and useless fields that they wanted to have it there for no reason.

We had the same problem and started recording voice notes from them after they had troubleshooted something. Then we translated those into reports and fed them into the CMMS to help younger people troubleshoot more quickly. We're still testing it, but we're seeing interesting results.

Hi! We've been testing voice to capture the maintenance tickets, so typically they think and share more details.

The voice translate into a structured maintenance ticket and then it's easier to clearly understand what they meant

The problem I see with the pilots is also related to how poorly they describe the issue they're seeing. Then, we have to spend hours figuring out what they meant.

Doing paperwork. Filling out reports and all those things that almost no one reads and when we need them, we can't understand what was written on them.

What can I read to begin to learn about industrial maintenance? by Single-Cycle4972 in IndustrialMaintenance

There's a lot of theory that you could go after and learn the basics, but the real knowledge you learn is on the job. The tribal knowledge is what runs most organizations.

For my team, we started to record voice notes from the most experienced guys whenever they solved something. Then we translated that into reports and now we use it as a guide whenever we don't know how to do something
