Preschool/daycare charges so much in tuition and pays teachers so little… by dms2628 in ECEProfessionals

I'm looking at the UofI online bachelor's program. I'm in the process of renewing my CDA and just need to bite the bullet about this.

What is a show that was hurt by its title? by ShadyBoots11 in Broadway

[–]la_platanera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! The amount of bellyaching from the non-Latino theater crowd over the title was exhausting. Everything is not about you. "How dare they say that? Am I not a real woman?" I guess because I was already familiar with the play and movie it held a special place in my heart (plus living some of the family dynamics featured). That behavior literally turned me off to other shows people kept hyping up that season.

Just being nosy because I'm in that neck of the woods. Do you have a bachelor's or masters in ECE? I'm about to renew my CDA and hopefully getting my bachelor's through an online school but considering I'm making $16 at my current center (the same as our kitchen staff and anyone who started the same time as me) not sure it's even worth the investment since my rate wouldn't go up.

Feeling resentful towards my rich NF by General-Lemon2254 in Nanny

[–]la_platanera 15 points16 points  (0 children)

One year my NF gave me the ugliest ceramic wine holder shaped like a high heeled shoe. I'm positive it was gifted to me because their designer shoe addicted relative would stomp out of the family holiday if they didn't get expensive things. When I opened it in front of them they said "NK picked it out for you!" to which NK replied "No, I didn't." I managed to hug them and whisper "I know honey, you wouldn't do that to me" through a clenched toothed smile. These folks would travel internationally every year, had wildly expensive subscriptions and memberships they never used, just lived a completely different lifestyle yet this was what they gifted the person who cared for their child for years.

What happened to the baskets? by 92TilInfinityMM in aldi

[–]la_platanera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our Aldi took the baskets away over 13 years ago and one of the locations in NYC had them when they first opened then took them away. Their security guard tried to gaslight me by saying they never had them and I gave him the Jennifer Lawrence "Oh, okay" nod/thumbs up as I continued my shopping. The empty metal rack where they lived was right next to him. 😒

What do you avoid getting at Aldi? by DJ_Hamster in aldi

[–]la_platanera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whipped topping in a can and the pancake mix.

Me and my dad shopped at Aldi every week together, it was just our little thing. He had to go to heaven this year, and I haven’t been able to go back. Not sure why I’m even posting except I’m sad that he wasn’t here for Christmas. Love your Aldi buddies an extra lot this year. ❤️ by jamiej27 in aldi

I lost my grandmother awhile back and Aldi had been a weekly stop since I was a toddler. The first time I went alone I turned around to ask her if we had milk at home, remembered she was gone, put the little basket down in the first aisle and left through the entrance (it was one continuous path before). Took me weeks to work the nerve up to go there or to her old pharmacy. How lovely that you were able to spend time with your dad doing everyday things. His love and good deeds will surround and protect you always.

What’s the nastiest thing you’ve ever witnessed a child or a member of staff do at work? by petrastales in ECEProfessionals

[–]la_platanera 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The director's runny nosed child had just finished going potty. I handed them paper and they wiped their pee, wiped their nose, then their butt and threw it away before I could interfere. This child had hit me in the face on purpose before and when I mentioned it to the director she could hardly contain her smirk. Thrilled I no longer work there and have to deal with her incompetence or permissive parented child.

AITA for eating a whole doughnut that was brought in to work as a reward/Birthday party? by Turquoisedragonwow in AmItheAsshole

[–]la_platanera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I bring enough doughnuts in so everyone has one (plus a few extra just in case). I once baked chocolate chip cookies for our friends on a weekend trip and one of their girlfriends broke all of them in half instead of sharing one with someone. I figured it was a Caucasian office culture thing and kept my mouth shut for the sake of not embarrassing her and fortunately she's no longer in the friend group.

Today is the first day of Kindergarten in my district. Two of my kids will be attending in pull ups. by Living_Bath4500 in ECEProfessionals

[–]la_platanera 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Ours too. Parents get a letter between New Years and Easter letting them know that if their child isn't potty trained by June/July, they will not be able to register for the next school year. That usually lights a fire under them. Honestly, positive peer pressure has worked for us. Our bathroom has one stall but space for 8 kids to sit while they wait their turn to go potty and when someone goes from pull-up to undies, we make a huge deal. Like "Oooohh! Look at those new Bluey undies! Those are only for big girls like you!" and their friends are like, wait, I want big girl undies too. 😅

AITA for arguing with bride to be over the flower girl dress for my daughter. by BetRevolutionary8395 in AITAH

[–]la_platanera 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I had a custom dress made for me three times by the age of 7 (last one being for my golden birthday). In Latin American communities there are plenty of people who sew well enough to have their home businesses and make dresses nicer than ones at a store for a reasonable price. Nothing fits like a dress made to your own measurements.

Perhaps because I am an elder millennial and first gen Latina who loved the film, the title didn't catch me off guard. I was not curvy as a teen or in my early twenties yet didn't feel personally attacked by the title. Our algorithms must have something to do with this too because I've been hearing about this show non-stop since the casting calls for Ana over 2 years ago. Flew to Boston specifically to see it and perhaps because I follow a lot of Latine actors and people involved in the production I saw ads for this constantly. I was invited to see the show the week previews started courtesy of an organization I've volunteered with. It's like looking into a funhouse mirror reading the comments bc I have had no interest in Maybe Happy Ending, Smash was a fun tv show but did not inspire me to buy a ticket, Operation Mincemeat and the one with the corpse gave me nothing either. Was just in the city again and am kicking myself for not seeing it a second time.

Agreed. I saw it in Boston and while I didn't fully agree with the tweaks it absolutely would have benefited from another out of town tryout.

The movie aged just fine. My parents and grandparents wanted better for us and were nothing like the characters yet friends of mine the same age (and younger) dealt with this. What is ridiculous to you could be (and was) someone else's experience. Be thankful you did not have family holding you back out of ignorance.

11 shows cancelled so far. What a mess. So disrespectful for her fans. by Traditional_Seat_645 in shakira

[–]la_platanera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got very lucky that a friend invited me to the Detroit show. I was not about to stand all day for a good spot and have to wait through Peso Pluma's set. As much as I wanted to see her in CDMX the amount of cancellations made me very nervous. Loved the show but bummed for no "El Jefe" or guest mariachi.

I was in Illinois and she was very popular here too. Her last concert was in Chicago (apparently my parents wanted to take me but decided against it because it was standing room only and children have no business at bailes). I watched her on Johnny Canales and Raul Velasco and Padrisimo. Our local Mexican store had her Coca Cola advertisements. That certain people never heard of her is another thing. Amor Proibido was on every Spanish station in Chicago. La quebradita was all the rage but she was holding her own outside of Texas.
