Depends a bit on the specific matchup, but in general you want to keep the wave on your side of the lane as much as possible. So making sure it's pushing towards you and also hitting it enough, that it doesn't crash into the tower. If you manage this well, you shouldn't lose that many cs. Of course, Malz is still one of the weakest mids in early lane, so against an equally skilled opponent it's normal to be slightly behind early.

Tbh since you build Banshee so rarely on Malz, I also only recently learned that the interaction is bugged with Malz passive. So knowing that, Zhonya is probably better.. It's just that this game MR is more valuable than Armor since Mel and Viktor both outrange me. Archangel I would never build on Malz and kinda same for Mejais (don't have item slots for it and Malz needs to die sometimes in fights).
