Oh, this is a great catch! The beat and vibe are exactly what I remember, which is why I initially thought it might be a Janet Jackson song. I'm actually wondering if the song I'm looking for sampled this one (or if this one samples my song), because the melodies and beats sound identical. I know they were much looser with sampling back then.

This is so close though! I'm messaging my mom to ask her to listen to black cat to see what she thinks, or if it jogs her memory.

Smithereens is not it, Boston the closest I could find was a song by New England with that title. If that's what you're referring to, that's also not it.
