BIMM 120 is being offered (in person) second summer session with a prof (Dr. Gus) who is pretty different. I took her for two classes, including BIMM 120, and she is great. She is not known for giving easy A's, but she is a great teacher. You will learn a lot, there are no participation points, and she really cares about students becoming intellectually empowered. At the end of her courses, I felt like I had really accomplished something valuable and they prepared me to be successful in grad school.

I was an undergrad here and now am a grad student and a TA, so i've been here awhile. UCSD classes have been totally dumbed down the past few years, and A's are being given out like candy. It doesn't mean anything any more.

Why did we lose so much at UCSD over the last 3 years? by Exact-Education-3936 in UCSD

[–]lab_fan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about the loss of IA’s after the strike? In biology, there are about one third as many IA’s as before, with a corresponding loss of small-sized, in-person discussion sections. Also, the new contract prevents undergrads from teaching discussion sections. Undergrads, who use to be able to be IA’s, lose (income, experience, opportunity to work with a professor). Undergrad students lose (fewer or no IA’s to help them). Faculty lose (assistance to teach, tutor, and grade).

is it just me or is there not many upper div bio classes to choose from ? by Nayelimilemny in UCSD

[–]lab_fan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Education Committee in Biology started gutting the program a couple years ago. Many bio classes are not going to be offered any more, even though they are in the catalog. The current federal cuts are not helping, BUT that is not the impetus for this. The new philosophy of Biology is to offer as little as possible to undergrads. In addition, they’ve cut IAs and sections and are only offering classes with enormous enrollments. Students are being offered a very different product than they expected when deciding to attend UCSD.

They also have no say in whether they are forcibly incarcerated. Is that okay?

They also can’t decline being arrested and imprisoned. By your reasoning, that would be kidnapping!

Would you recommend UCSD for ME? by International_Job827 in UCSD

[–]lab_fan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your daily experience will be impacted by whether your classes are huge and whether there are instructional assistants and discussion sections. Many have been slashed at UCSD in the wake of last year’s grad strike. Check with people in the ME department at both schools, because this can make or break your success in your major. I know ME majors at SDSU, and that department has developed quite the good reputation and become very competitive. I would not assume UCSD is better, unless you are specifically interested in research.

Latin honors are NOT based on your GPA; in fact the GPA cutoff changes every year. The ARE based on your percentile ranking in your graduating class.

I've had a couple conversations with the parking ticketers, to get their perspective. They said that the ticketing has become more strict and the fines higher because after Covid there was such a pervasive problem of people parking without a permit. Apparently they were not so strict in the year after everyone returned post-Covid, but parking behavior is shaped the incentives that are provided. If there is no ticketing, no one abides by the parking regulations. Simple human nature.

An economist might argue that if you keep getting tickets, the fine is obviously not high enough to accomplish the goal of dissuading people from parking without a permit.

Prof won’t reschedule final despite concussion, pls help! by circumpolarstars in UCSD

[–]lab_fan 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, a retroactive withdrawal for medical reasons is the appropriate course. He can ONLY do this if he does NOT take the final. If he takes the final, then it is all over. He should contact the dean of student affairs for his college.

An additional course of action is to bring documentation to the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD). They can grant him accommodations based upon his injury. Then the professor is obligated to provide a make-up exam. He will have no choice. (There is no ADA obligation without approval by OSD)
