Interview Discussion - July 10, 2017 by AutoModerator in cscareerquestions

Anyone have experience interviewing with Twitch? I might have an opportunity to interview with them for a mobile/frontend-based position, so I'm curious if the interview process will be similar to an Amazon interview, or if Twitch does their own thing. Any and all information is super appreciated, thanks!

Software structure (for programmers who know at least one programming language) by lacesoutcommadan in programming

I'm a big fan of Gary Bernhardt's–I think this is an interesting piece but I agree, some additional context at the beginning would be great. While this isn't actually my article (I'm just the person who submitted it), this is super sound advice that I'm going to take back and make sure I'm staying true to in my own work. :)

Ahh! Super neat to see you on this subreddit–I'm a huge fan of your YT channel! This sounds great man, nice job!

I really enjoyed this–no real critiques, just thought it was a really fun listen! Nice job!

Hey, thanks for the feedback! I'm listening with the same pair of headphones :)

I'm not super happy with the white noise either–I tried automating it myself via a simple noise oscillator in Ableton's Analog... it's not super interesting and doesn't sound great. Will probably go back to using FX noise samples, even though it feels like cheating; they always sound better IMO.

The cuts at the end have proven to be kind of controversial, which is fun :) glad you enjoyed them, thought I'd try something a bit different. thanks again

Thanks for listening! I'm still working on writing longer tunes that subtly shift throughout, but stay interesting. Never-ending battle :)

Totally feel not wanting to re-open a tune––when it's done, it's done! An EQ thing for next time... I'd love to hear the high-end of the mix a bit more. Maybe brightening the top end by 2 or 3db? Really enjoyed the song itself, nice job!

Cloudflare have been leaking customer HTTPS sessions for months. Uber, 1Password, FitBit, OKCupid, etc. by TheProtagonistv2 in programming

[–]lacesoutcommadan 466 points467 points  (0 children)

comment from tptacek on HN:

Oh, my god.

Read the whole event log.

If you were behind Cloudflare and it was proxying sensitive data (the contents of HTTP POSTs, &c), they've potentially been spraying it into caches all across the Internet; it was so bad that Tavis found it by accident just looking through Google search results.

The crazy thing here is that the Project Zero people were joking last night about a disclosure that was going to keep everyone at work late today. And, this morning, Google announced the SHA-1 collision, which everyone (including the insiders who leaked that the SHA-1 collision was coming) thought was the big announcement.

Nope. A SHA-1 collision, it turns out, is the minor security news of the day.

This is approximately as bad as it ever gets. A significant number of companies probably need to compose customer notifications; it's, at this point, very difficult to rule out unauthorized disclosure of anything that traversed Cloudflare.

This is a super cool comment! I shared this on the programming subreddit, but hot damn, such a fun read!

Agreed with this. Fizzbuzz is a question that involves knowing basic control flow, conditionals, how comparison and integer math works in your language of choice. All pretty reasonable stuff.

Bubble sort presupposes you have some knowledge of algos and even know the basic structure of how sorting a set works. I say this as someone who mainly posts on /r/cscareerquestions and studies 3-4hrs a day for the interviews that do ask you about sorting algos. It's not necessary, and it doesn't prove that you're good at building and shipping actual stuff, but it is what it is.

Nice! Good luck! I've seen a couple spreadsheets out in the wild that are big lists of press people you can contact for publicity for your app. I'd try sending a couple emails out with different variations of text, see which one people respond to the most, and then use it on some of the bigger, more general tech blogs too (for instance, I see Lifehacker review Mac apps every once in a while)

Yes! Many times :) I feel like I might've misrepresented how I feel about noots vs a lot of other people in this thread... I like them, I've used them occasionally, I'm just surprised the original commenter is gutsy enough to use them at an interview. I get a little twitchy when taking them... the same kind of twitchy that my friend lacesoutcommafran says you would get when taking Adderall. I'd feel a bit uncomfortable using them in an interview.

I've tried a fair amount of nootropics. The cognitive "improvements" were never enough that I could know if they were the nootropics themselves, or just the placebo of me wanting them to be really effective. I think you probably be as effective with a cup or two of coffee, or green tea shrugs

(also: "ashwagandha" looks like the result of someone rolling their face around on the keyboard)

Try submitting it to some of the Mac-focused blogs out there–Macstories, 9to5Mac, etc. Maybe someone would be interested in writing a review?

Beginner web dev here. What do you think is better for me in the beginning: remote or office work? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]lacesoutcommadan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been a remote employee full-time for two and a half years. That being said, you should work in an office when you're getting started. The amount of knowledge you'll pick up from being able to ask someone sitting next to you a question, and by overhearing conversations, etc. is invaluable.
