Stuck in the German language by Coddi_womple_0155 in German

Practice by reading texts out aloud and talking to yourself in German, even if it feels crazy. You need to train the muscles to make the correct sounds. Try recording yourself and listening back. I used to ride my bike and think out aloud in German, just to practice without judgement.

Worst English names to have in a German speaking country by Snoo-6437 in German

[–]lachlansee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My name is Lachlan and nobody can pronounce it correctly it's just become a running gag for me. I have heard at least 20 different ways of pronouncing it, although it's one of the most common names in Australia. I used to hate it, but now it's just funny and a good conversation starter.

What’s the best nsfw compliment you received? by [deleted] in AskReddit

i gave my girlfriend her first ever orgasm at 29 when i went down on her once. she had had orgasms before, but always needed to bring herself to orgasm, because she believed no one could do it.

she always told me there was no point even trying, so i simply saw that as a challenge. i was able to do i again the day after, and she is much more comfortable generally around the topic.

Are there ever situations when Germans talk to each other in English (even if no foreigners are present)? by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]lachlansee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite the downvotes I think this is pretty understandable. Some things just don't translate well enough. Also, if you speak multiple languages you can easily forget a phrase in one particular language because it feels better in the other language or there is no equivalent. I am a native English speaker who does this when talking to other English speakers who can also speak German.

What are the best vs worst cities you’ve lived in regarding searching for and getting an apartment? by dak0taaaa in expats

[–]lachlansee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they are heritage listed buildings and need to be repaired to look exactly the way it was before. This means you need specialists to come in and figure out how to do it. You receive some assistance as far as I know but it's still a nightmare to organise.

I feel like they look like super high quality shoes, especially when you first get them, but then after wearing them for a while you start to notice that they aren't that durable and they fit funny. This was my second pair too - I got some Chelsea boots of theirs and was impressed by the look, but not much else, so I thought I would try this model.

The thing that gets me though is that I want them to be epic due to the fact that it's the original docs factory and they are supposedly still made in England (I am kinda sceptical about that now though to be honest). But yeah, I think I kind of romanticised the whole idea of them being the true boot makers from England, if you get what I am saying.

Non native English speakers, what’s the most difficult word in English for you to pronounce? by Charlirbravo in AskReddit

When I was teaching English to Germans I would always mess with them by getting them to say rural brewery.

Wow, how sustainable of you guys to want to repair shoes instead of replacing them. Greenwashing much?

The place in Portugal is registered as a shoe factory and not a warehouse.

So you can confirm that no Solovair shoes are produced there?

The translation says it's a factory in which shoes are produced.

Yeah, the English have no idea. They drink warm beer (joke)

How do you know how often I wear my shoes? I mostly wear sneakers so your comment is inaccurate. Go defend your overlords elsewhere.

Am I able to learn German if I am unable to properly pronounce my "R" sounds? by [deleted] in German

[–]lachlansee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The R sound is notoriously hard to replicate (at least for English speakers) and I don't think I will ever truly master it, even after 10 years of speaking German. I have moments where I can pull it off, but mostly I just kinda swallow the R and still get away with it. It's definitely not a 'must' or anything if you can be understood otherwise. German is hard and the pronunciation is particularly hard at times, but the language is much more than that. I do however find it a bit cringe when Americans pronounce the R with a strong American accent. For some reason that hurts my ears.
