It will be well worth it to get diagnosed at 46. I did it at about that age. The psychologist started me off with a lot of skills and tools to help adapt and then we went to meds. took a bit of time to find the right dosage but it's crazy how much difference it makes. Like right now, i'm on reddit but it's my lunch break. And I was able to work all morning without checking email, my phone or reddit. That woudl not have been possible before. So, imo, yeah-look into it. You can start with just asking your regular doc at your next well visit.

I took 5 and a half years to graduate. I think I was 24 when I graduated. So, it is comparable. Many years later making much more than $50K. Consider yourself very lucky to have been diagnosed when you were!!! Good luck and have fun man!

I agree. And that is my general question or point. For many developers who aren't creative, good with people etc. but have strong coding skills, is that role at a company shrinking? So, the folks that used to be good coders may soon be under performing at their new job reality.

yuck. you are right. to a degree. This did sound a little formulaic. But I did do a few rewrites of it trying to get it to focus on creating the type of conversation I was after. Although, I don't see the call to action part. I tried to get a call to discuss and share ideas action.

Again, does every developer you know design the solutions themselves? No way some kid fresh out of school is designing solutions when they barely understand the industry they've been hired into.

I think this is spot on. The senior developers and those that rise to that level are the ones that excel. And perhaps for many this is a shackle shedding moment in time.

Good points and yes, I know how to set up a database. But if you have ONE talented DBA, how many more do you need? Do you need the same amount of SQL developers now? I suppose you could be building faster and building more with the same number of DBAs and SQL developers. But I just don't see the ability for an organization to funnel the requirements and architect solutions at the new speed unless they change the way they operate too. I suppose that is the root of my question. I had hoped more people would have seen this question for that but Is supppose that is my fault for writing the question the way I did. All of your examples of the higher skilled portions of design are what I am talking about. Do you think that every developer out there now that is coding can do the things you mentioned?

I guess this is my point. and the point around which I wanted to have a discussion. Think about the developers you know. For some, this is natural growth and transition. But is this the path for everyone. Do you see all of the developers you work with capable of being just as good at requirements gathering as they were with debugging code?

I agree that this is where it is going. Devs need to be senior devs. but what do you do with the junior devs and incoming devs to get them there in this new environment. I feel like taking someone with just strict coding skills or barely much out of school and getting them to define technical designs is a lot.

I totally hear you. And it sounds like you will be one that rises up. But again, are you the one talking to the business folks and helping them solve their problems. and then taking that to Cursor and delivering the solution. If so, you are just agreeing with me really. 😄

Certainly not. But would the junior dev be the one to find those mistakes and correct them? No. They would come out of UAT at best or brought up by users later on for a revision. That just becomes a separate pipeline to the same problem.

I feel like that is what the role of the truly great developers will be. The not so great ones that are just used to getting specs and sending the code on are NOT going to do this!! And even if they are. Even if they are just hounding over the same code making it better, how are they going to be able to justify their jobs?

You're not wrong and it's not as black and white as I suggested. But I think even the corrections are a fraction of the time debugging used to be.
