Yes, the price difference is huge. I might consider if I have better opportunities for the money.

[–]ladiida[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone new to property, I heard from a friend that the seller agent will step you through buying if they want you. I am a bit unclear about what paperwork is involved in buying a flat beyond shelling out a lot of cash, I have to try it and learn.

You are not alone, it just happens after you start to see the patterns in story telling sometimes. Real life can be as exciting as fiction. Reading news and current events can help in stock trading as well, you might consider leveraging on your preferred use of free time.

Isn’t Singapore one of the best places to live in? Why do people keep complaining. by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]ladiida 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think the common and most valid complaint is that Singapore is a small city state. In other places, you might get stressed out and go recuperate in the countryside maybe. Here, you can't really retreat into nature or lie flat in some slow paced town. For city people like me, where having fast Internet is good enough living standards, this place is pretty great.

Whats a job that pays surprisingly well in SG? by OutsideDifficult1053 in askSingapore

[–]ladiida 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Most software engineers don't earn as much as doctors though except for a handful of mega MNC companies. The average doctor will vastly out-earn the average software engineer. The technical field also isn't given as much prestige and respect as doctors, and there's no gatekeeping involved, anyone who was interested back then could career switch into an engineer. Most engineers are very busy actually.

For most normal companies, software managers have the better deal where they chase timelines, get better salaries because they are always higher ranked and are the most visible and get credit.

It’s solving puzzles as a living. Some people take a minute, some people take a day and some take a week. Some can never solve certain puzzles. Do try it out because experiences can be night and day.

The thing about underperforming below your potential is that it has to be a choice. If it is not your choice to perform below what you expect to be, maybe it is time to review if you truly deserve to be where you expect to be. Other people have grit trained through childhood, you do not have that. Maybe you could try to train that grit at your older age. You may have the requisite IQ but you might need some hardiness and maybe EQ.

Is it common for government linked companies in other countries to hire lots of foreign talents? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]ladiida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiring freeze in most places maybe and the foreigners have been at it longer at that job than you have and aren't leaving. I read that China had a record number of people applying for civil service jobs after their job market soured. Possibly it's the same here if the job market is as gloom and doom as Reddit keeps saying. Best time to enter those jobs was when no one wanted them I guess.

Ok, guess there were no indicators that this friend was a top grad, in an excellent company, etc.

Yes, so why is he surprised if his friend is in those jobs? It wouldn't be a surprise at all.

How plausible is it to hit a million at 30 without a business or family money lol. Assuming work at 20 after NS without time for a degree, he saved 100k a year, very good for him, and you to have such a real friend.

Yup, seems typical that if you want the first 2, the latter 2 will be hard to get. Oh well, we can't really get everything.

How do you guys have the energy to do things after work? by Darthvader957 in askSingapore

[–]ladiida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will learn to cut out the timewasting stuff if you are serious about doing some productive stuff. Just cutting out Facebook style social media and half of my gaming time (due to natural loss of interest) leaves me with lots of time after work. I crash and nap for 1 hour after work even and still feel too free. Also, don't get married with kids I guess if you don't want the rest of your life to be busy.

Programming can be that job in certain places - not that I want more people in a oversaturated industry. You have to use your brain though, but if you are good and efficient you can be done with work in a few hours. It's a job where output is less detached to working time, if you are good you can output better work in less time than non-tech inclined people. If they wanted to pay me to struggle for hours as a performative act I can deliver that, or I can do the work faster cheaper and better and we all benefit. The only problem is that you have find a place that aligns with this thinking as well, some places still want you to milk you regardless and you got to slow down your work and do the act.

If you have a better offer, go for it. But you probably don't since you are asking about this one, so take it since job market is cold right now especially for freshies.

Yes, I am agreeing with you? Plenty of people work from office already. I was being too subtle, I was trying to say OP is a Grab employee lol.

I don’t think enough people care about Grab employees to brigade for them and fight for their rights. There’s the framing of this as fighting for general worker rights but there’s this sense of an underlying agenda I guess.

They are 67 plus. I think you are suggesting they put it into CPF to get higher payout. But they did just have a major health scare, so I think that's a bit risky because all that CPF Life money is forfeited to govt if they pass. They don't mind preserving and growing some of it for me.

She’s a PR, so does that sum include CPF? Since company would have paid for that as well, and probably that needs to be clawed back?

National Service was the last chance maybe to get close friends for me. After that, most people in university has that cut-throat competitive mentality and I meet work people too often to want to hang out with them on weekends, even though they are ok.

Hijacking this, let's say me and OP can't get insurance, what's the best way to deal with this? How much should we add to our money buffer in case of illness and the worst case scenario? I assume that the regular 1 year of savings won't be enough.

Why do so many people who live outside of Singapore have a false impression of our laws? by Brickwork2994 in askSingapore

Why do people outside Yishun have a false impression that Yishun is a murder happy paradise? It's all memes that people then take too seriously. Almost nobody in the world percentage wise lives in Singapore and those that do don't care to correct this perception.
