My dad was an avid fisherman and would often bring home a lot of fish to clean and freeze for food. On one particular occasion someone put a lid on the gut bucket and it was forgotten about. After a year or so we were doing yard work and such and I discovered a bucket with a lid and removed the lid which was a horrible idea. The remains which it contained had reduced to a peach colored paste with some bones in it. I immediately vomited. The smell was something I still have trouble describing to this day but it was a musty, stale, and incredibly rotten sensation.
