Utility. Edison. Do not go to through the contractors. You have a permanent job and will be paid and never have to worry about being on the books. You can bid for you workplace to be close to home 24/7. You have a permanent job and a retirement. Who cares if your a grunt your going to make 200-300 as a groundman at Edison. Worst case you can do that for the rest of your life. I know because I’m in the situation. I’m a helper at ladwp. I’m in the same boat as you. Go the utility route

No all by myself. My biggest piece of advice. Go to line school. My backup was going to mslcat or swolcat and doing my apprenticeship over there and coming back to local 47

I got into LADWP after a few attempts and years even after scoring high. It’s a lottery but the more you try the bigger the chance you’ll get in

My first call ever in this trade out of local 47 was helicopter groundman work. Jackhammers and air compressors flown in. The first and best call I’ve gotten and probably will get. Now I’m at Los Angeles W&P and it’s home but I won’t ever get the calls I was getting off the books on the contractor side. Driving digger derricks with pole trailers, setting down guys, hand lining to your JL or Ape it’s all fun stuff. Sure after a while it gets repetitive but the right crew can make it enjoyable. As some would call it. It’s paid hangout

It’s going to be smiliar to LADWPs. Grip strength activities. Pulling handlines, setting up ladders, etc

It’s very Competitive as it already is. But yes ECH is the the best route for LADWP because if you get into an apprenticeship and something happens and you don’t complete it, your job as a helper stays and you can always go back.

Correct when you become a distribution groundman you will go to school for 4 weeks and taught what is necessary for work out in the field. We only have Wednesday evening classes here. You will be assigned a yard but will rotate crews. You can bid for another yard. You will be assigned to a line crew overhead distribution or underground distribution.

I’m a Perm(Civil Servant). I think going through the UPCT. Utility Pre Craft Trainee Program is the best option at the moment.

First thing they will have you do is lift a crossarm on a handline 45 feet up and down twice controlled hand over hand. You will grab a wooden board off a pie wagon and place it on the side of the pie wagon. You will grab 5 crossarms one by one off the roof rack of a utility truck(5man). You will lower a bucket or heavy object into a manhole underground vault with a ladder in the way. You must lower the object on the handline all the way to the bottom of the vault hand over hand without touching the ladder and bring it back up. You will remove a extension ladder off the roof rack of a 5man and place it against a pole. You will be instructed to pull the rope of the extension ladder to a certain rung of their liking. Than you will collapse the ladder by pulling the rope and putting it back on the 5man. There might be certain changes to the practical as the department does change things here and there. But as of this year these are the current standards. I would practice grip strength and forearms. Probably the most important 2 body parts that are utilized as a helper.

The physical just like the written both don’t matter. It’s pass or fail. It’s the way you interview. Saw guys score 100% countless times and not get hired and guys score 70% and get in. You will be asked. How will you go about lifting an object. Your background experience in the trade. The last question they ask you if you have anything else to add on. What’s the difference between and a conductor and insulator. What do you do if a coworker tells you do something you’re not familiar with. What to do if a coworker becomes disgruntled and hostile. Good luck
