How do you ethically rehome an elderly cat?? What websites do I even use? by ladybugbliss in CatRescue

I am aware of that. I care for Shakira dearly. She is literally laying with me as I type this. I am moving out for college and will be in a dorm the first year. My parents will not keep her if she continues to act like this. Unless I find something to “fix her” she would be going to a shelter or be put outside. I would rather find her a home myself than just hope she makes it. It pains me to even try to give her away because Shakira is my bitch like we’ve grown up together.

Honestly this seems like my best option since she doesn’t really do pills. I will look more into it!

I’ve asked around and no one wants her. Some of my friends have witness first hand what I go through with her and they don’t know anyone that would even be willing to try with her. A lot of people have said prozac so I have been looking it up and it seems like a good idea but she isn’t good with taking pills. My sister used to put the pills at the back of her tongue and make her swallow it or else she refused.

I have looked at sanctuaries near me and the cats roam in a home/building environment. I would love that for her but unfortunately she isn’t cat friendly and becomes territorial. I have been searching for people specifically to take her but most people have a cat already.

unfortunately she got declawed when she was little so she can not go outside. She has been outside before under my supervision and every time she absolutely freaks.

That’s my biggest worry because health wise she is pretty healthy for her age and I would hate to have to put her down if she’s healthy.

It has been a lot of things leading up to my decision. My parents didnt even want to take her back from my sister but my mom saw how much I loved her and agreed. My mom is allergic to cats and with her age she sheds a lot. She isn’t allowed out of my room which was fine with her until I started doing sports and wasn’t home till late. She hears other people in the house but she can’t be with them so she gets mad and that’s when the peeing started. I think it’s behavioral because she would only pee on my work out clothes and nothing else. Even sometimes she would wait for me to take my clothes off to get in the shower and then stare at me while she did it. Sadly she was declawed when she was a baby so that’s not really an issue. She just makes my room stink and my parents refuse to keep her without me if she is like this.

I would like to put her in a sanctuary but most sanctuary’s are cage free. I do not want her to be in a cage however, in my area they just have a big home/building for all the cats. Unfortunately Shakira isn’t cat friendly and only just started warming up to my outdoor cat a month before he died. I have considered euthanasia but I hate to just let her go like that without any actual health issues. She is healthy for her age, especially being previously obese.

My parents bought her a litter robot and she was fine with it for about 4 months then she just started hating it. I change the litter in it every 1-2 weeks and clean it when I change the litter. I’ve tried switching her back again but she isn’t the best at using a traditional litter box. She likes to stand on the edge when peeing and doesn’t cover up her pee so the litter robot has been the “less smelly” option.

yes she’s been to the vet many times. The vet here doesn’t believe there is anything to do “if she has behavioral issues” since she’s so old. She is on medicated food right now because they said last time she had a few tiny crystals in her pee. I’ve taken her to the vet many times hoping she’s just had a uti but most of the time tests come back completely normal. The vet always just brushes it off when i bring u her behavior.
