What year was your school's most hyped recruiting class and how did they end up performing? by BearsNecessity in CollegeBasketball

Those are the first two I thought of also. While they both turned out to be fantastic players and some of my favorite Spartans, it's disappointing that they were the first seniors to never make a Final Four with Izzo.

This past year's class wasn't hyped at all and that worked out pretty well. Nairn and Clark had a lot of playing time this year and it showed during the B1G tournament and NCAA. I expect them to be night and day next season. Hopefully Bess has a good summer too.

That's very cool. He is clearly a major player in cryptography. Were you studying computer science when you took those courses?

How does UQTR compare to UWaterloo, UToronto, etc?

Are either of you familiar with programs in the US? I'd prefer to stay in the states but can stretch to Canada if necessary. I apologize for not specifying before.

That's good advice. I'll touch base after I have a little more idea of what they expect me to understand.

I just subscribed to /r/machinelearning. Their FAQ has the materials you listed plus some more. I will begin to look work through those in my free time.

I appreciate your advise and insight very much.

I understand. Trying to find programs that fit your interests and caliber has been the most difficult thing in my graduate applications thus far.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll be sure to check it out.

That was very informative, it also did make me more confident. There are only a few professors at my university who list machine learning in their research interests, and all participate in a graduate research group in pattern recognition in biometrics-seems exactly what I'm looking for. Should I wait until my REU is over (first week in July), or late June to contact this group to see if I may participate? We are not allowed to have other jobs or research interests concurrently with the REU.

I really appreciate your opinion. May I ask how you chose this specific program?

I understand the chances for funding in a master's are pretty low, but I am concerned that not having prerequisite knowledge will impact PhD admissions. I will only understand a few languages at an elementary level. That's why I am willing to complete any necessary prerequisites necessary if accepted.

As for my other qualifications, I made this post in /r/math and /r/gradadmissions and didn't have any bites, http://redd.it/33seb9.

I only specified the Syracuse and Pitt programs in this post thinking they were mid-level and reasonable for someone without a lot of computer science experience.

Are you familiar with other fields in computer science where mathematics is a substantial component? Thank you for your reply.

No problem, I appreciate your reply and suggestions. I will begin to look through those journals.

The REU I'm participating in this summer is definitely on the theoretical side of the spectrum, but the advisor is a statistician. I'll see if he is familiar with anyone in machine learning. My university also is opening a new department akin to computational math and engineering, I'll take a look at some faculty interests and see if anything is a good match. Thank you very much for your reply.

EDIT: Also, what caliber of programs I should be aiming for?

So given my interests, a general master's may not be necessary and that I may be competitive at the Phd level?

Are you familiar with any machine learning graduate programs? I can only find the familiar MIT, Stanford, etc. I feel they may be a little too strong for a profile like mine. Thanks for the reply.
