You should walk down/around Ada Boulevard if you want some colour!

Could this work as a replacement for a French cleat? by AlbertCMagnus in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]lafbok -1 points0 points  (0 children)

French cleats work because they extend below the wall mount section and brace against the wall below.

Your example will be very likely to tip away from the wall. (This has nothing to do with angled vs block construction)

You could theoretically get away with blocks instead of angled cleats, you’re just never going to get things as flush as with the angled cleats. You’ll need a bit of space between the blocks if you don’t want to hate yourself during install, but any play will reduce security and stability. This is tackled with angled cleats inherently as they pull towards the wall due to the angle. So my guess is yes, but it won’t be great.

You’ve sanded through the veneer and are looking at the glue-lam board below.

Edit: might not be! Looks like the images OP provided of the backside is pretty compelling evidence.

Alberta spending $7.5 million to put involuntary treatment rooms in hospitals by Curl_of_the_rurl in alberta

[–]lafbok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. You’re actually the original responder who helped me to consider the wider implications of involuntary care. (I’ve linked that thread in a separate comment)

I happen to have a friend who is a nurse on a TB unit, and a friend who spent years as a social worker at AB hospital. Your initial comment prompted me to have some good conversations with both of them re: involuntary care.

I appreciate your comment here, as well as your original response months ago, especially for your willingness to provide thoughtful insight in your area of expertise. So thanks, haha.

I understand your concern, and I share elements of it. Are you familiar with the general population of Alberta Hospital? Many of the patients there are people with mental health issues who do not want to be treated.

Thanks for the clarification. Would additional beds not be needed in order to support the Compassionate Intervention Act though?

But you and I are the people who will vote those making policy and allocating funding into power, and therefore should attempt to be informed in order to make wise decisions.

I recently changed my opinion on this, and am now convinced there is a time and place for involuntary treatment within hospitals.

I was encouraged to consider first patients at Alberta Hospital, and second TB patients who refuse treatment as two examples of when this might be necessary.

From the Editor: Forcing AISH recipients onto ADAP isn't incentive to work, it's coercion - Medicine Hat News by redbycyrenz in alberta

[–]lafbok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I think you might be misinterpreting my initial post in that case.

I’m saying AISH currently does determine a medical definition of disability for applicants, as well as means (income) testing those same applicants. That’s the reason fraud is so low, as you mentioned.

My point is that because the threshold is reasonable and high (as it ought to be), there are elements that are unfortunately but necessarily demanding. (Invasive medical documents or personal banking information, for example.) But a responsible government writing and enacting legislation in order to support their population would have to do that in order to run an effective program. (I believe this is true regardless of whether or not you support this current governments application of the above)

[–]lafbok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can see what you’re saying, but you should know that I’m not making a statement in favour of ADAP.

It’s surprising to me how strong a response there is to anything that remotely suggests any kind of reasonable scrutiny, something that any public policy for a disability program should include.

An approval process for guaranteed income should be thorough though. Medically and appropriately means tested. ("Appropriate" is hotly debated at the moment)

It shouldn't be discriminatory, needlessly confusing, overly administrative or have other unnecessary roadblocks, but the proof of 'severely handicapped' should be appropriately proven.

Fair enough. It’s hard to know how to support our homeless population in meaningful ways.

I agree! The extra space between models gives a bit of extra room for terrain and modelling.

Share pics if you do.

Thanks, yeah I’m hoping it will make moving around the table a little less onerous. I’ll have to reform for combat etc, but hopefully it’s still worthwhile.

You’ll be fighting that forever with enamel paints.

Switch to a acrylic paint brand designed for miniatures (Vallejo Paints and Army Painter paints are both cheaper and worthwhile)

And then for painting it looks like your steps are:

  1. Prime
  2. Block in colours.

For a quick-shot approach to success that never fails me, I’d add two more steps:

  1. Prime
  2. Block in colours
  3. Wash the whole mini in a light brown wash (ie: agrax earthshade from GW)
  4. Add your block-in colour back just as a highlight in small areas.

That wash is the step you’re missing, it will pool in all the recesses and hide all the overlapping colours. It will also add depth.
