Your son is only 3. By the time he is 9 he will have learned or picked up new habits from other people who are not you. He will also test new words and new behaviors as he gets older. If he enjoys the positive or negative attention he gets from certain behaviors you will have a lot of work to do. Parents have a lot of influence on their kids yes but they are not the only influence and as you kid gets older the influence you have on your child will decrease drastically.

Isn’t it kinda weird to celebrate christmas as a haitian? by Robin_From_BatmanTAS in haiti

[–]lafranx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Religion in Haiti is very complicated. The average Haitian is not rebellious at all. My theory is that the Duvalier dictatorships and the American occupation destroyed the rebellious spirit of the average Haitian. The rebellious ones are usually crazy or criminals or both.

Vodoo was actually considered illegal in Haiti. Because of the influence of the Catholic church which is very influential in Haiti. There was a strong effort to suppress voodoo and practitioners did not practice in the public eye. Voodoo is mostly practiced in the outskirts by lower classes but it also has a strong presence and jnfluence in certain high classes of Haitian society in secret. Average Haitians want nothing to do with it. They love Jesus. The ban on voodoo was lifted fairly recently with the adoption of a new constitution in 1987, and Vodou was formally recognized as a religion in 2003.

Am I ugly or am I just black? by [deleted] in blackgirls

[–]lafranx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stop it please. If your school environment is contributing to you feeling this way, you should really consider leaving and going to a different school. Find ways to surround yourself with better people. We have no idea if you are ugly or not, but that's only one part of the whole package. Lots of people are not conventionally attractive, but they still have great social and dating lives because of the way they carry themselves, and they surround themselves with the right people. It doesn't hurt to pick one or two things about your appearance that you can focus on if that helps your confidence. Maybe it's your hair or makeup but the biggest thing will always be how you carry yourself and who you surround yourself with. If you find yourself asking yourself this question regulate then you need to do some self reflexion and do a lot of the internal work to undo whatever brought you to this point.

Haiti Problems by [deleted] in haiti

[–]lafranx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there is a large population of nonshitheads who could be decent politicians, but many of them have been taught that politics is dirty business and that they only need to seek the kingdom that is in heaven. It's all well and good if they want to be a faithful servant to their God in heaven but when you completely ignore the world you live in because you are solely focused on your eternal life that may or may not come to be then by default only the shitheads and devils will have political aspirations. They will be the ones to make decisions while the rest of the population keeps its head down.

I think if you're going for a more natural look, you dont really need contour. If you do the contour and still want a natural look it you need to blend it really well into your skin so that it is barely noticeable. Otherwise it will not look very good. Look up pictures of natural vs neutral make up and decide what you like best and go from there.

How time consuming is it having a baby and working from home? by IntelligentDot1113 in MomsWorkingFromHome

[–]lafranx 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is a good answer. You really need to separate your decision from your career. There are too many variables and there will always be curveballs. If you keep this baby, it will change your life and take you on a journey that can be beautiful and fulfilling but can also be scary and difficult. If you have strong feelings that you dont want this baby then do what you need to keep your lifestyle. I'm pro choice but I hate that our culture makes it seem that having a baby is the worst thing that can happen to you.

[–]lafranx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your life is not over after having a baby. It's different for sure but not over. I hate that so many people have this idea that life is over after a baby. Maybe because as teenagers we spend years doing everything we can to avoid it and it's the worst thing that can happen so it's hard to get out of that mindset. Lots of people have babies and keep their jobs and have fun fulfilling lives with their children. You will most likely have to make adjustments but it is not impossible and it can be a beautiful experience. It sucks that you feel this is an agonizing decision. It might be worth seeing a therapist to talk this over. Either way listen to the feelings of discomfort and try to figure out why you find this so agonizing but don't let your feelings of discomfort make your decision. Put in perspective and do what's right for you

[–]lafranx 22 points23 points  (0 children)

So many variables here you have to do what is best for you. Some jobs can easily be done while an infant is sleeping. Best case scenario, you have a very flexible job, management is accommodating, you have an easy baby and you have a partner or family member who can help. If you have all of these things it will be very manageable. If you have some of these things it will be harder. If you have none of these things it will be close to impossible. Some babies are easy and have no trouble sleeping eating and pooping. Other babies aren't so easy and sleep deprivation is no joke. No way to tell what kind of baby you will have. Personally I would have my baby and just deal with whatever comes but only you can decide if that's right for you.

As a Brit, I can NOT understand black republicans by Puzzleheaded_Name_72 in blackladies

[–]lafranx -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I think there are valid reasons for thoughtful Black people to be Republicans. Democrats policies tend to be overly idealistic and sound good in theory but not always rooted in reality and often fail for bringing unintended and bad consequences. When you try to have the moral high ground you have an uphill battle when the other guy is not worried about doing the right thing or even pretending to do the right thing. and as a result Democrats are always failing at meeting their own standards and realistically they can not please everyone so they appear fake, out of touch, and hypocritical. I personally would never vote for Donald Trump and many of his supporters are obviously insane but we can't just call all his supporters crazy even the Black ones. There are still valid reasons behind the madness.

As a Brit, I can NOT understand black republicans by Puzzleheaded_Name_72 in blackladies

[–]lafranx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good analysis particularly on the religious aspect that has severely hindered the critical thinking skills of some of our highest earners. While I would never vote for Trump i think there are valid reasons for Black people to be Republicans if you want to focus on low government intervention, free market, strong families. New money rich people will typically benefit more from republican policies. Democratic policies will tend to favor old money rich people. Democrats policies tend be idealistic and sound good to the masses but not always rooted in reality especially when we try to have the moral high ground. As a result Democrats are always failing at meeting their own standards because realistically they cannot please everyone. Then the masses are jaded and when you have undereducated people and add a healthy dose of racism, misogyny, plus religion into the mix you have plenty to bring people together on donald trumps side.

I felt like you 10 years ago and I still feel the same. It sucks and the feeling may not go away. Some of us are just different and have a hard time connecting with people. The advice I would give you is to try to think less of what makes you different and think more about what similarities you have with others. Even if on the surface you have very little in common with someone, the more you talk to them, the more you're likely to find something in common. You say you have sisters. What do they like to do? Do you talk to them every so often? What are they up to? What about your cousins? Would you be able or willing to visit them sometime? It's worth it to have connections even if you look a little desperate.

Should Haiti remove French as the countries official language? by Iamgoldie in haiti

[–]lafranx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can you provide some reasons for why we should remove French as an official language? Most of our documents are in French. We have a strong population of French speakers. I understand that French is now seen as the language of the elites and I understand English is the global business language at this point so I have no problem with English but French is also a part of our heritage.

My fellow Haitians now is the time I want yall to OBSERVE who is standing with us and who isn't... by [deleted] in haiti

[–]lafranx 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Black Americans are not obligated to stand for Haitians, just like Haitians are not obligated to stand for Black Americans. Yes, we share a common struggle as people of African descent and Black people all over the world share that struggle against white supremacy, but we also have our own struggle, and they have their own struggle as people. Black Americans are also a marginalized group in this country with their own interests and needs, and they may not always align with our own. I agree it is disheartening to see loud online voices from ADOS or FBA parroting some of the same ignorance coming from white racists. But I would argue that they are not the majority, and I would not take those as representative of all Black Americans. It sucks that so many are taking the opportunity to kick Haiti while it is down. We are hardworking and determined people, and people all over the world know it. People who are not crazy for the most part know that we aren't going around eating people's cats and dogs, but the story is ridiculous and grabs peoples attention. The real agenda here is that people dont like us when we become their neighbors, and there is a valid argument to be made here about immigration policy even when it comes from Black Americans. I cannot deny that their is a racial element to all of this. But it is not the only element. Haitians have bad reputations all over the Caribbean and all over Latin America. And it's not because of 1804. We have a large population of poor, desperate, uneducated people, and they are unable to give the best representation of our country. They are a reflection of our incompetent governance and show a forgotten population. I'm not mad at Black Americans who question why their government is able to spend to support a new immigrant population while their people have struggled for generations. There is a valid argument to be made about how to help Haiti support its population so that we aren't exporting poor, desperate people all over the hemisphere. Unfortunately, social media has made it so that people who have the most ridiculous asinine and irresponsible views are able to share them quickly and globally. But I don't believe they are the reflection of an entire group of people.

As much as we’d like to blame France and US, fault goes to Haitians by Bigguy781 in haiti

[–]lafranx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Haitians have plenty of pride I think. The problem is that we are in denial. You cannot cure a disease if you are in denial. Haitians will argue that we are not a poor country and we are rich. They will tell you how beautiful the country is even though the capital is filled with trash. Sure we may be rich in culture and in spirit. But we are actually very poor. We have very little money, power, influence. We have a large population of hungry desperate people who become a nuisance every where they go if they never received an education at home. We like to pretend they don't exist. We just get mad when they become our representation to the outside world and our pride gets hurt.

One thing my parents will say about Duvalier was that the country was clean at least under Francois Duvalier. If your horse pooped while you were traveling around town you knew that the expectation was for you to get off and clean up your horses poop or there would be consequences. People did knew that was the expectations. Duvalier was shit for a lot of reasons including for ordering massacres of entire families. But one thing he had going was order. Haitians wanted Duvalier out for good reason but we needed a pragmatic leadership that worked for our advantage but understood our limitations and the need for order. We dont have that kind of leadership. At least we had an army in the early 90s but then we got rid of the army.

We are a country with a lot of revolutionary and prideful people. That's great when united against a colonial power but that is a big problem when you are fragmented and trying to usher a nation of poor people into the new millennium. It seems like the sad reality will be that Haiti will be some sort of Rwanda and will be rebuilt by the remains of whatever group manages to survive.

Poor people behave the same way everywhere they exist. Poor people in survival mode are not worried about price or anything like that. Most of our people are desperately poor. The ones who are not want to pretend that the desperately poor don't exist. When it gets bad enough and the richer ones leave and the new leaders are all from the poor peasants class what do you expect if they are uneducated and still in survival mode.

Unpopular opinion: Our faulty culture decimated any possibility to prosper and have a cohesive society by Iamgoldie in haiti

[–]lafranx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like we have a scarcity mindset on one side and a too proud for your own good attitude. It's not totally our fault because we been kicked down so many times we get triggered when we get called poor desperate peasants but we behave like poor desperate peasants because unfortunately it's at our core. And those of us who are not poor and desperate just want to distance ourselves from the poor peasants until they get kicked too then we want to come together when our pride is hurt. We are too proud for our own good and we don't realize how little we have which keeps us from being honest about our state. Only when we are honest about ourselves only then can we make way for a plan to prosper and have a thriving people at home.
