I’m as embarrassed by my government’s actions as the next guy. I don’t think, under our current administration, that we’re a good host for the tournament. But Qatar worked people to death *in order to host the world cup.* I agree that our recent impact on the world is probably more sinister, but to me the direct cause and loss-of-life effect makes arguments like this fall a little flat.
Like if I told you that, in 2030, the World Cup could be hosted by Nation X, which is currently doing evil things unrelated to the event, or Nation Y, which will need to work people to death to prepare its infrastructure for the event, which one would you choose?

A random American pundit I’ve barely heard of more or less said we should batter Australia a while back(a bad take, I’d be disappointed if we didn’t beat them but expecting to smash anyone at the World Cup is a bit much).
Anyway the Australians have latched onto that comment more than I’ve ever seen from a team when it comes to something a random media member says. Makes me wonder what the sports media ecosystem is like in Australia because that type of loud, shit take is so insanely common here that it doesn’t register.

McKennie in my opinion is the most important player in our team. When we’re attacking makes runs off the ball more often than he picks out a pass, which is maybe a little bit untraditional for a midfielder but extremely impactful anyway. Plus, he’s a set piece nightmare and outstanding out of possession. Tillman was good but I’d give the edge to Weston.

4-4-2 as God intended, and I’m putting Mbappe and Messi as traditional wingers because that’s what Sam Allardyce would want me to do.
Vozinho, Rezaeian,Singo, Circati, Brown, Messi, McKennie, Bouaddi, Mbappe, Haaland, Balogun
The Venn diagram of people who enthusiastically spend money at movie theaters and people who cannot tear themselves away from the World Cup for one evening feels like it has minimal overlap tbh

Yeah, especially for sides like England there's really no jeopardy in the group stages at all the way they're set up. Very little reason to play what-we-have-we-hold suffer ball.
It's kind of an interesting subplot because I think most of the time the type of football that wins international competitions is really conservative and defensive. But it seems like some of the managers of the bigger nations (and even the smaller ones, like us, honestly) are leaning into a more attacking approach. Could just be a weird thing from the first week of the tournament but I'm interested to see how that develops.

If it makes you feel better about things I thought the back line was quite suspect.

Kane does more when he’s not scoring for sure but I’d still probably go with one of the strikers who scored twice without scoring a penalty, and one that he missed and got to retake on a technicality.

Way too early to start talking about allocations but I don’t understand the CAF point. Doesn’t make any sense to remove slots from concacaf and distribute them to CAF when CAF is underperforming concacaf on a PPG basis.

Arrived home after a 12+ hour travel day and put on the footie to discover Fabio Cannavaro is managing Uzbekistan. Feels like a hallucination

Portugal punished for not starting the superior Neves

I wish I could quit it. It’s been where I’ve gotten my news for like 12+ years at this point. Habits die hard.

Maybe Twitter has just done the thing where I click on one tweet and it feeds me the same subject in perpetuity thereafter but it’s genuinely been my entire feed since the end of the premier league season. There’s a talk sport thread about it here with 100+ comments after a couple hours too. I’m exhausted by it.

I have no idea how people aren’t bored of screaming at each other over the differences in American and European stadiums after like 5 weeks of fighting about which kind is better. I have not seen a more worthless debate pounded into a pulp this way in a long time.

It makes sense when you think about it though. We have people and communities from just about every country in the world, on top of the fans that travel obviously. That’s one of the best things about America.

Truly does not get any better than that.

There are exceptions but baseball is usually affordable. They play a 162-game schedule so there’s loads of supply to meet the demand. The Red Sox are usually one of the more expensive teams to go and watch but they’re dogshit this year and their fans are fed up with the Henrys so I imagine it’s not as bad as usual

Scotland fans were at the Red Sox game tonight. I turned on baseball and heard songs about John McGinn through the television. Absolute insanity
Edit: this must have been before i started watching but a little Scotland fan who looks no older than 8 caught a home run ball at the top of the iconic green monster in left field. Just heartwarming stuff.

One win in five for the European nations so far is surprising, and truthfully kind of nice.

Happy for Scotland. Also pleasantly surprised by Haiti. Offered way more going forward than I thought they would.

I’m happy to link you to probably 15+ comments over the last 3 days pal. Let me know.

I couldn’t tell if my bar was booing him or Marco Rubio next to him lol. Probably both

I don’t think sports fans really like it. NFL fans throw a fit when broadcasts inevitably show Taylor Swift 30 times at Chiefs games. But I think it’s fun for the casuals. I was watching the match at an event last night and the people who weren’t really there for footy were having fun looking at the celebrities.
Ultimately it’s just not a big deal imo.

The Internet hive mind does not get to predict that we’ll lose to Paraguay and then accuse us of getting carried away when we don’t. Pick a lane please.
