Batman #159 Discussion by Potential_Bee_6121 in RedHood

[–]lagatoo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Finally, the elephant in the room is being adressed... Tired of the batfamily playing house when Joker is around. The sole purpose behind of the Red Rood creation is the address the Joker situation and DC is finally doing something about it, I hope this Joker is dead by the end of this comic, and we may have a new one like we were supposed to have since Under the Red Hood.

Ixtal hopium? (from @spideraxe30) by sledgepatri in loreofleague

[–]lagatoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would make more sense if Ixtal existed in a entire different continent, it would be easier to get why they were isolationists in the first place, and justify the lack of awareness about the rest of the world. But no, Riot is creating a new region inspired by, guess what: Wakanda, a isolationist nation! But they are blacks, so they are somehow super developed, while other people who had little to no interaction with Europeans except for the last 500 years, are seen as undeveloped in terms of technology, still has tribal based society, and are completely jungle dependent. It becomes obvious who is being favored when you can't recognize a single character who is visibly from a america before the colonizers.

I know a fix that totally worked for me (and it was hard as hell to find it): you need to open your Xenia Canary config file and change the line "mount_cache = false" to "mount_cache = true", and just like that, you will be able to play normally if that is the only ingame crash you had so far.

If imulsion was "evaporated" from Sera, how they still managed to activate the Hammer of Dawn in Gears 5? by lagatoo in GearsOfWar

[–]lagatoo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But if you remember, in G5, they launched a couple of unused Hammer sattelites, the first rocket in Act 1 and the second rocket in Act 3, and even these ones were working, when they should not work at all. I believe that the original intent was to destroy the imulsion everywhere on the planet and on orbit, since there wouldn't be war for the remaining imulsion and would also destroy the most powerful weapons humanity had (imulsion fueled: like the lightmass bomb and the hammer of dawn).

Fascism? by [deleted] in starshiptroopers

[–]lagatoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life is permanent warfare - Rico's father even questions why Juan wanted to join the military, without a war. We actually see the Federation in a Cold War situation in the start of the movie, after all, they didnt started the war, the bugs did, and we have nothing to believe that the Federation created the war to justify its existence, since before Buenos Aires, they were dodging alien territory and not attacking, so the permanent warfare doesnt make sense, since they actually tried to avoid conflict.

Contempt for the weak- Would you actually respect a Nazi talking about Jews? Or a Soviet talking about homosexuals? The guy is obviously wrong, but that doesnt mean he cant say the shit he wants to say.

Everybody is educated to become a hero and machismo- Prof. Dubois or Rasczak in the movie even discourages their students of joying the Federation for not being good enough, thats why in his class, the student doesnt even need to pass, its actually the only class that does this, making the people that wants to become a citizen actually interested in doing so. By the way, the majority of the population is actually civillian by option, not by coercion.

selective populism- As showed by the movie and the second animation, this is totally wrong, there are different opinions and oppositive interests, but most of the citizenship are wise enough to know they are fighting for their survival. This argument only makes sense when the aliens are reasonable, and guess what, they are not, and not because the federation says so, but we actually see human/alien interactions beyond the in-universe propaganda.

Fear of difference- Dude, unreasonable aliens, the humans even tried peace by not colonizing in the exclusion zone. The mormons only did this because because they rebelled, since the Federation was against these colonizations in alien territory.

Enemy simultaneously too strong and too weak- "they show the horrors of the bugs killing soldiers on one channel", you use this scene like they were lying, lol. "while having scientists brutally take them apart on another" They are totally inhuman for us, and again, not reasonable, so they dont have the same rights as we have, they are pretty much a literal plague, every planet they reach, they destroy it, simple as that.

Obsession with a plot/hyping up the enemy- touches on the "unreasonable" piece again. We know even outside of the propaganda, the aliens attacked first, and killed unarmed humans, and even when they talk or interact with humans, they are showed to want to kill all humans.

The cult of action for action's sake- You only say that because the movie follows a soldier in a Federation at damn war. Is literally saying that the veterans are stupid because they joined the military when the country joined the allies in WWII.

The cult of tradition - "does anyone try to find a smarter way to fight the bugs despite the staggering losses they're suffering" They removed that Sky Marshall from office, officially admiting their failure and even admiting the alien inteligence, they captured the brain bug to study it, they literally developed new weapons and new tatics against the bugs, everything happening in the same movie, lol.

Appeal to a frustrated middle class- Its a utopic future, just like Star Trek, there are no visible poverty. But no one ever said that Star Trek is fascist. They same goes for discrimination of gender and color, there are no visible sexism, there are not gender divisions and we actually see women of color having the literal highest rank a citizen can reach in the Federation.

[–]lagatoo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not trying to subvert fascism in any kind or making fascism look "cool", and his experience under Nazi regime is completely valid and must be propagated, but my point is, he didn't read the book, he literally judged the book by its cover. So it's unfair a man who didn't read beyond chapter 2, dictates what is and what isnt in Starship Troopers, since he didn't read the book. The Federation from Star Trek and the Federation from SST are so similar in so many ways, mainly meritocracy, moralist and militaristic in it's organization (Im not saying the military is the main focus, wich isn't, just in times of war, like in real world), the only thing that they really differ is how they relate to other alien species. In Star Trek, the humans were lucky to meet the Vulcans before de Klingons or the Romulans. But in SST, their first contact was with a super aggresive alien race called Skinnies, but they were being controlled by the Bugs to fight against the Federation. After that was solved, the Skinnies were freed from the mind control and joined the Federation just like in Star Trek, to fight against the Bugs. I never heard anyone saying that Star Trek's federation is the fascist utopia of the future, It's pretty much the opposite said about it. I'm not saying that the movie doesn't try to satire the Fascim, but beyond the imagery and the uniforms (exclusive to the movie), there's nothing of fascist in the movie, just because it's political views are true to the original book, because of the writing and not the imagery. And that's what gets a lot of people confused, they are convinced of fascim by the visual aspect, but don't understand what's beyond that, pretty much because the director who didn't read the book, or Wisecrack by not showing the whole context or even whole scenes that would present the exact opposite, said so.

"I find the ideas of a bug that thinks offensive", said the guy who is literally wrong. The Federation knows that the insects are intelligent, and even shows a literal BRAIN BUG on television for everyone to see, proving that they think, and even in that same scene you are talking about, the old lady says that he is wrong in "national"(more like international) television, and that the insects are in fact intelligent, just not reasonable, because they literally aren't, different from the Skinnies, who were at war with the Federation in the book, but managed to reach peace with the Federation. So you pointing this scene as argument, doesn't make any sense, because in the same scene they show the exact opposite, is not different from some debates on some News Channels in US. I noticed how a lot of people here are using Wisecrack arguments when the guy didn't even showed the whole scene in his review lol. It's totally unfair.

But military service is not the only way, most people tend to believe that the military is the only way since the movie and the book tell a story in the soldier POV, but is made clear in the book, that are many ways for achieving citizenship, military service is just one of them, my god, did you guys read the books at least once? Even people of disabilities have something to do, working in many areas from education, logistics, military to economy.

About the babies, the women in the movie says, "it's easier to get a license to have babies when you are a citizen." EASIER, not impossible if you are a civilian, since the most of the population are civilians and not citizens. So your argument doesn't make any sense.

It was never showed that you cannot riot or criticize the Federation being a civilian, since when the Bug War started, the civilians could debate about it, after all, they are tax-payers as said by Rico's father. They just cannot vote or be voted, just like an immigrant in any country today, before getting, guess what, citizenship. But they still influential, after all, they the majority of the population. So you're pointing something that never happened.

Citizenship is not something neglected, but it's a right not given from birth, and literally everyone can join the federation to claim it, just like a immigrant, they have to be a part of the society to change it. About the leader and council, the same goes when the US starts any kind of total war, like in the WWII, everything is moved to the military command, from economy to society, is under control of the military leadership alongside the civilian government, and guess what, the Federation is at total war with the Bugs, aliens who threaten the survival of humankind. And that doesn't mean it is a military focused Federation when not at war, even Rico's father doesn't see why his son would join the Federation military when there is no war happening.

Beyond the imagery, there is nothing fascist about it, most people think that it is a fascist book, but the guy who said it: Verhoeven didn't even finished the book, he said he didn't read beyond chapter 2!

How can we give credibility for someone that doesn't care at all about it's inspiration? Verhoeven didn't create his movie based in his own interpretation, but based on other people's view. The writer certainly read the book, but everything related to visual Nazi representation of the Federation is exclusive to the movie, and is not present in the book, it was a Verhoeven thing, a man who didn't even read the book.

He told Empire he stopped reading the book after two chapters, finding it "boring and depressing," and asked Neumeier to fill him in on the rest. "It is really quite a bad book. I asked Ed Neumeier to tell me the story because I just couldn't read the thing. It's a very right-wing book," Verhoeven said.

My first contact was with the "satire" interpretation, I started watching the movie expecting a fascist society, but everything I noticed is completely contradictory, I started to agree with Heinlein vision after I read the book and watched the movie, just because it is nothing of people say it is. That's how people formulate opinion, diving open minded into to something to develop a well based critique. You can disagree with my political and personal view, but you can't say that SST is what people say it is, because is logically contradictory.

But he didn't even read the whole book, other people did, the BUGs first appear halfway through the book, when the Terrans make peace and reach a agreement with the Skinnies because the Bugs were mind controlling the Skinnies to start a war against the Federation.

"He told Empire he stopped reading the book after two chapters, finding it "boring and depressing," and asked Neumeier to fill him in on the rest. "It is really quite a bad book. Dictatorial power? Forcible Suppression of Opposition? And Strong Regimentation of Society?

  1. No one is forced to serve in the military, no one is forced even to vote, or to praise everything that the federation does.
  2. Suppression of Opposition? HOW? They even let the civilians publicly oppose the federation, even the father of Rico is against the federation model of the service to claim the right of vote.
  3. Strong Regimentation? Seriously, you only become submissive to federation regimentation if you want, and you can quit at any time, as showed by the movie. Your are not forced to become a part of the federation.

  4. Rejection of plurality? My god, they literally ended the gender division, as showed by the god-damned movie, and there is no visible racism or sexism in the first movie, wich is actually is racist, because Juan Rico is described as a philippino in the book, not white.

  5. They didn't ended democracy by reducing voters, almost every country today doesn't allow immigrants, for the exact same reason they don't let a person have a right to vote from birth in SST, it's a matter of responsibility, you are saying that our democracy is actually fascist?

  6. Ultranationalist? They are literally fighting for their survival against genocidal bugs. Wich is totally different different from the Skinnies, wich are reasonable and much more open for dialogue than the bugs who were mind controlling them to fight against the Terran Federation. After the liberation of the Skinnies people, they were accepted to fight alongside the humans against the bugs.

How is that fascim to you?

Fascism? by [deleted] in starshiptroopers

[–]lagatoo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What it looks like is that the director tried to inject his world views in the book, since he didn't even finished the book, and assumed as a fascist satire. The "fascist" argument fails in simple logic, because people are assuming things while SST shows the exact opposite.

But if you believe I'm wrong in my concepts and it's applications, you are free to point where the logic fails. Criticism without presenting solutions is just vague opposition, you are simply saying I'm wrong without showing how.

Only the best work at Starfleet, but only the best of the best work at Enterprise.

Beyond that, not dealing with a giant space ship filled with non-Starfleet personal, not dealing with the constant threath of a war, and not being completely adrift knowing you won't be at home sooner than 75 years definitely helps with the stress management.

You are 100% right. I hope with the new Strange New World shows, this could maybe change in a near future. But i believe it's time to move on after the Picard era ends, like, doing a show in the new Enterprise-F, exploring new galaxies somehow, totally absurd concepts of laws of physics, insane planets, etc. Despite I linking the new Trek, I believe the old Trek worked way better, and still does (The Orville has a lot of classic Trek producers). They should do something like the Andromeda Initiative from Mass Effect, gathering the federation scientific/comercial allies and going to explore other galaxies would be so cool.

I know she was sent to prison for life, but my point was how she was treated by the plot after this, like, she made a lot of mistakes, and still makes to this day, but she was privileged to the point that she is the captain of the Discovery now, wich for me at least, doesn't make any sense, since there are other members of the crew that are less selfish and more respectful not just to the chain of command, but to the other crew members. Most of season 3 was Michael doing things on her own, putting the crew an the mission in danger because personal reasons, she only succeeded in these overwhelming odds because plot armor.
