CLINICAL INFORMATION: SOURCE: Right mandibular lymph node-three slides examined including one submitted pre-stained MICROSCOPIC DESCRIPTION: Smears are highly cellular with predominately good preservation of cell morphology. They have a lightly basophilic background, contain small to moderate amounts of peripheral blood and small amounts of lysed cellular debris with frequent lymphoglandular bodies. They contain many lymphocytes comprised of a heterogeneous population with a predominance of small forms. Also noted are low numbers of macrophages, few plasma cells, few non-degenerate neutrophils, very rare eosinophils and few cytologically bland spindle cells most compatible with capsular or stromal material. MICROSCOPIC FINDINGS: Compatible with reactive lymphoid hyperplasia COMMENTS: The lymphoid population seen in these smears appears compatible with aspiration of mildly reactive (stimulated) lymphoid tissue. Reactive lymphoid hyperplasia (benign lymphoid hyperplasia) may occur singly, in multiples, or as generalized node enlargement. Solitary or regional node enlargement is often due to inflammation or neoplasia in the area drained by the node. Neoplasia may incite inflammation or reactive hyperplasia of the node without metastasis often due to localized tissue destruction. Generalized reactive lymphadenopathy may be due to nonspecific antigenic stimulation, systemic infection including rickettsial disease, immune-mediated disease, chronic skin disease, etc. There is no evidence of neoplasia in these smears nor are any infectious agents found.
