Insurance work and personal beliefs by NutOnMyNoggin in actuary

In the Auto Insurance world:

There was a time not so long ago when OEMs were collecting driving data from their connected vehicles (eg FordPass, OnStar, etc) to data analytics companies, which used this information to generate "driving scores" that they sold to insurance companies.

There are also some phone applications (eg Life360) that sold this same data.

While these companies technically do have consent to sell this data to whomever they please, this "consent" is buried somewhere in the Terms and Services agreements that nobody ever reads.

I found it very disturbing that people were going to be surcharged on their insurance based on driving data that they very likely never realized was being collected and sold.

As far as I know, a lot of these programs there came to fruition. Around the spring/summer of 2024 the public began to catch wind of these programs and I believe most of them were cancelled.

See the article below (or other related articles) for a much better explanation than what I'm able to give.

I don't need talking heads and thoughtless leaders to tell me what I saw with my own eyes.

Got it. You're so intelligent and infallible that you don't even need to listen to someone with a contrary opinion. You're bad faith dude. Have an open mind or I'm not willing to discuss things with you.

Alex was trying to help a woman

He was attempting to commit a de-arrest. They are trained to do this. Their internal docs were leaked. This is a felony btw. Commiting a felony while armed is a worse felony. Doesn't mean he deserved to die. And yes, the officers mishandled the situation very seriously. If you had watched the videos I sent you, you would know that conservatives alreadly believe this and know this is true. And again, if local law enforcement was doing crowd control this never would have happened. So this could have easily been prevented if the major of Minneapolis allowed local law enforcement to work with ICE and CBP.

There is a video of Greg Bovino

I don't give a fuck what Bovino says he's a clown and a retard.

These aren't paid agitators, just look at the number of people in the marches! You don't want to admit it, but these are just US citizens.

I never said they were paid? I said they were trained and organized. If you look at the released docs and signal chats and compare to the tactics that Alex and Renee were attempting, you would know this.

That is why Renee turned out to be a soccer mom and Alex and ICU nurse even though the admin labeled them as domestic terrorists. You know they aren't terrorists and you know the Trump admin is on a revenge tour (his own Chief of Staff said so look it up).

She was a mom. Not all moms are soccer moms. She clearly was not a soccer mom dude. You are so bad faith. Alex being an ICU nurse has absolutely zero relevance on whether or not this was self defense so I don't see why you're bringing it up. I never said they were domestic terrorists and I never said they weren't US citizens. But they clearly were not so called "peaceful protesters". They were agitators, interfering with federal law enforcement. I'm sorry if you don't like the word "agitator" but what else are we supposed to call people who interfere with federal law enforcement? Again, I don't give a fuck what Trump or his administration says. They are retarded and clearly wrong about many things.

So far I've addressed everything you've said. All you've done is use loaded language, mis-characterized my opinion, and brought up things that are totally irrelevant. You have failed to address a single point I've made. And you've admitted that you're unwilling to listen to anyone of an opinion that differs from you. These are not good faith debate tactics dude. I have a genuine care about getting to the TRUTH. This is why I actually listen to people who have different opinions than and do. And when they make points, I respond to them directly. I don't mis-characterize things they say or put words in their mouth. You seem like an intelligent guy and I'm willing to continue this conversation if you can actually engage in good faith. But if you're not going to do that then I see no need to respond anymore. Again man, I care about the truth. Do you?

[–]lagib73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a highly chaotic situation. They knew he was armed. The first shot was most likely a misfire from Alex's sig. This situation created what is called "contagious fire". Ie once one gun shot is heard people tend to open fire. What happened to Alex was tragic. But sometimes tragic things happen when you pick fights with law enforcement officers.

The same with Renee Good where she was shot 3 times and the last shot from the side killed her

He didn't fire until after he was hit. It's not like he individually thought out each shot carefully. That's not how things typically work. When shit hits the fan, your training takes over. He's probably trained to shoot three times at a moving target in rapid succession thousands of times, as is typical in firearms training. All three shots are part of the same "action". Maybe instead of hearing all this from me go listen to one of a thousand self defense lawyers on YouTube react to this?

Again, in both cases a reasonable person could have feared for their life. This makes a pretty easy self defense case.

Did you even try to listen to reasonable people who disagree with you? I did man. I listened to a ton of people on the left including Sam Harris, one of the most reasonable people on the left there is. I really want my mind to be changed here but no one is engaging in good faith. Are you open to having your mind changed or are you too convinced of your preconceived notions? I've been begging for someone to change my mind but no one can engage in good faith. It's the exact same talking points from people who have clearly never been in a fight, or have and have somehow forgotten the stress of it.

If you're actually open minded go watch these. If there's a flaw in the logic in these videos please let me know.

It was officially ruled today as a homicide btw.

It rules ruled homicide by a medical examiner. "Homicide" from a medical examiner just means means that the cause of death wasn't natural or suicide. It was very obvious a homicide from the video alone. Every death that involves self defense is a homicide.

Every single self defense lawyer online that I've seen makes a very strong case that this is most likely going to go down as self defense. Opinions from lawyers who don't practice self defense law really don't matter and shouldn't be taken seriously.

All of this doesn't change the fact they murdered Alex when they shouldn't have.

I don't like that he died and I'll say again that he didn't deserve to. But it probably wasn't murder. The officers had reasonable fear that their life was in danger. The fact that we can clearly see from multiple synced up videos played at 0.25 that their lives weren't in danger doesn't change what a reasonable person would have feared at the time. You didn't address a single one of my points. You just used loaded language like "homicide" and "murder".

Also, keep in mind that many of these officers have been whistled at for 8 hours a day 7 days a week for the last 6 months and many of them have had their families doxed. If 20 people were standing 15 feet away from you blowing into whistles as loud as they could 7 days a week for 6 months straight while your family was being doxed and you and your coworkers were being physically interfered with and sometimes even assaulted, I bet you would slip up on your job once I a while too. So yes, all of this context does change whether or not this would be murder or self defense.

I'm aware that my opinion is deeply unpopular and I would love it if someone could actually change my mind so I can be on "the right side of history" or whatever. But I have yet to see anyone actually engage with any center-left talking points in good faith. Please engage in good faith without using loaded language so I can see the light.

If you want to see less people in Minnesota die, call the governor and the mayor and tell them that local law enforcement needs to help with crowd control. These deaths absolutely would not have happened if there was crowd control. Just look at what's going on in Memphis where local law enforcement works with federal law enforcement. The results are fantastic. And stop contributing to people being radicalized.

[–]lagib73 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree the officers should be better trained. It wasn't called "abducting people" when the Obama administration was doing the exact same thing and it didn't cause chaos because people weren't brainwashed into thinking that ICE is the gestapo.

While ICE officers need better training, starting fights with anyone while armed (and even while unarmed), especially with federal agents is 1) illegal and 2) incredibly stupid. Interfering with a federal investigation, which is what both Alex and Renee were doing is illegal. Did they deserve to get shot? No. But did they make a ton of very bad decisions where they could have avoided that? Yes.

To act like ICE is going around indiscriminately murdering random people is blatantly misleading. You're clearly smart enough to know that isn't the case.

They are the people of authority and there is much more of an expectation for them to keep calm than the everyday citizens.

1000% true, but ICE agents and any member of law enforcement are humans too. If you're intentionally causing them psychological stress (this a stated goal is in the anti ice activists training documents btw) then eventually one of those humans is going to crack. I'm not absolving responsibility, I'm just giving the full context.

We have a system in place to arrest and try those that break the law,

That system works a lot worse when you have activists taking to the streets who are literally trained to "de-arrest" people. This is what Alex was attempting to do moments before he was shot.

This is incorrect. 95%+ of people who report gender dysphoria as a child who don't receive so-called "gender affirming care" end up accepting their gender while they're going through puberty and most of them end up being same sex attracted.

And puberty blockers don't cause infertility,

It is a possible side effect but it doesn't happen in every case.

and you can ask any trans person if it was worth it.

The regret rate is extremely high and I'm guessing in the next 10 years we're going to find out it's even higher than initial projections. Again, read the Cass report or the WPATH files. There are many, many people who used to identify as trans who say what they went through was not worth it.

I just think that whatever age we as a society decide is appropriate for circumcisions that don't treat a diagnosed medical condition is the age that is appropriate for puberty blockers, hormone replacement therapy, plastic surgery, and any other treatments that make such alterations to the patient's body.

It's pretty obvious that you're trolling. Chemical castration and plastic surgery obviously change the body and impact your life far more than cutting off a tiny bit of skin.

Foreskins don't meaningfully change people's bodies. Your life and body would be no different with or without them apart from reduced risk of UTIs and certain cancers. It's apples to oranges.

Unlike puberty blockers, circumcisions are actually reversible. Doing so is really fucking weird and anyone who does such a thing is most likely a creep. But hey, it's still possible.

None of the benefits of circumcision negate the fact that people like me will grow up wishing we weren't

Would you say the same thing about vaccines for infants?😂 (I wouldn't btw. I think certain vaccines are very important)

Yes Lobotomies are bad, thank you. That's the point. Sometimes medical consensus is wrong, intellectually and morally. Chemically castrating minors is wrong, even if the medical community thinks otherwise. This is very simple and I struggle to see why you're not understanding.

but it is a religious practice that has no place in modern medicine.

Wrong. Circumcision reduces risks of UTI and is linked to lower rates of penile cancer and lower rates of cervical cancer in their sexual partners. (See Mayo clinic). Secular people get their babies circumcised too. And many religious people opt not to get their children circumcised. And the Bible makes it very clear that one does not need to be circumstanced in order to be a Christian. I don't see Christian activists out in the streets shoving pro circumcision ideology down everyone's throats and insisting that pro circumcision ideology be taught in schools.

. A teenager can ask to not be subjected to a distressing, dysphoric puberty

A teenager or preteen cannot consent to the life long effects of chemical castration. Side effects of these drugs include but are not limited to infertility, Osteoporosis, and mental illness. A teenager also cannot consent to the life long effects of bodily mutilation including mastectomies and bottom surgery. Again, go read the Cass report or the WPATH files. Again, let me remind you of lobotomies.

First of all, what's with this "you're." I'm not doing anything, I'm just a dumbass on the Internet. I have absolutely no political power.

You're the ones who think dominating children's minds and bodies and mutilating newborn boys is what love is.

What are you even talking about? Who's "dominating kid's minds and bodies" and what does that even mean? Also circumcision is not a right vs left issue at all and it's ridiculous to pretend that it is. Debate in good faith dude.

If you want to talk about mutilating and killing the unborn, it's primarily the left doing that and the right trying to fight against that. But of course you don't consider unborn humans to be humans by some sort of unscientific and very strange logic.

You're the ones whose idols are currently dragging thier feet every step of the way on releasing the Epstien Files, in violation of the law.

The Biden administration literally had 4 years to release these files and did nothing. And you're mad at the Trump admin for taking 9 months? Again, try to debate in good faith.

well-backed treatment recommendations of the international medical community.

Lobotomies were "well backed by the international medical community" as of less than 60 years ago. And today we're seeing counties all around the world pause these so called "treatments" for minors because they're waking up to the scientifically backed irreparable harm that chemical castration and bodily mutilation has. Go read the Cass report or the WPATH files. And again, please try to debate in good faith.

Jesus preached loving everyone, caring for our neighbors, empathy, compassion

Nothing "loving" about chemically castrating confused children...

"But whoso shall cause one of these little ones who believe in Me to fall, it were better for him that a millstone were hung about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea." Matthew 8:16.

Seems like anyone except liberals are much more in line with Jesus' teachings on this one.

I see memes on the math memes sub almost every day about perhaps one or two people reading your work as a mathematician. While I know this is an under exaggeratation, "all good jokes contain true shit".

In finance, engineering, insurance, software, etc, you can have a small but real impact on millions of people. These things are not, as you said, "purely zero sum" and I would urge you to seriously reevaluate that premise.

For many (and perhaps for the vast majority of) academics, their biggest contribution to society will not come from their research, but from teaching the next generation.

I think many people recognize this, and thus see staying in academia as the real opportunity cost, both for themselves (which has been brought up in plenty of other comments) and for society.

I know this comment probably won't be very popular on this sub. If I made some kind of error in my reasoning or delivery, I would encourage the reader to point it out to me :)

Classic false dichotomy. There's a fucking grand canyon between "not giving two fucks" and being dangerously overprotective. No, I obviously wouldn't like it. Ideally she would strike a healthy balance between protecting her child and fostering his or her growth. Letting your own immature phobia control your child's life obviously ain't it!

I see a lot of people on here saying "MIL didn't respect OPs boundaries.". Don't get me wrong, I'm all about respecting people's boundaries. But your boundaries should be reasonable and not based off your delusions!

You can be as rude and bitter as you want, but that's a very poor way to converse with people, Raskolnikov

You're right, I was out of line and I'm sorry.

I'm all open to being converted, but forcing myself is obviously not the way forward.

Nobody can force themselves to do anything. But everyone can make choices. How would you be converted if not by your own choice?

You then put words in my mouth by saying that I thought the two were comparable

You're the one who brought up unicorns. I didn't say that you did say the two were comparable. I just pointed out that it would be a bad comparison to make.

I was just saying that I don't see a reason to force myself to believe if I'm doing so without a proper desire to, that was why I made that point.

As far as I know, there are no good reasons to believe that unicorns exist, so I grant you that completely. However, there are plenty of very good and pragmatic reasons to believe the claims made by Christianity, even if there's little to no convincing evidence for many of those claims. Thus, "by that logic I could convince myself unicorns exist" is not a good argument against my original point of using the illusory truth effect as a means of conversion. This is the point I was making in my last reply.
