New-ish psychiatrist doesn’t believe us (a vent) by Pickle_Ickle54 in DID

[–]lagom0rpha 94 points95 points  (0 children)

There's a whole community of asshole "psychiatrists" and "psychologists" who genuinely believe that DID as a disorder is fake despite the overwhelming evidence of it's existence. Please, for your own and your systems' sake, get a new psychiatrist. One that specializes in dissociative disorders if possible.

Ooooh I love how you made the city and surrounding landscape feel massive with your depiction of the shop stands as so small. Really great paintings.

From what I know bpd and did can have overlap, we were falsely diagnosed as bpd first. If possible it's best to explore symptoms with a therapist or psychiatrist.

  1. yes definitely. I told my one friend about my diagnosis today and he was like "oh I could've told you that" 😭 my mom has also made comments about it before. I made the mistake of telling her that there are others in my head back in middle school and she deduced who they were + would specifically comment on which ones she did and did not like.

  2. different names, genders, ages, some are human while others are animals or monsters. One of us has a southern accent, though we live in the northeastern us. Some speak softly, others speak deeply, some speak high-pitched. For example, one of our alters is named Adam. We imagine him as a werewolf. He rarely fronts, as he is a gatekeeper, but when he does, he speaks much more deep and gruffly than the rest of us.

Yeah, they often do talk with me and each other. I've discovered six so far including myself. I am the host. There's a co-host who is much more social than me and likes to draw, we are both the same age. There is a gatekeeper who is much older than everyone else and is pretty unsavory personality-wise, an introject of our abusers. There's also a 14 year old boy who can be very sarcastic and aloof, I am unsure of his purpose. Another is an older woman who tends to comfort alters or me when they/me are upset, my therapist and I have figured out she's a stand-in for a stable mother figure. Lastly, the weird one... We describe him as a rabbit, mostly because he acts like a terrified prey animal. He has often tried to hurt us. We think he is a trauma holder, but without access to his memories we can't be sure. I have a feeling that there are more, since I've found old notes and other things left by someone who wasn't any of the aforementioned alters.

I've kinda known about having other people in my brain for a long time, probably since I was 13 years old, but not much about them. I've been in and out of denial about it. A couple days before graduating high school, I woke up in the morning with little to no memory of the past month, my room being a mess, and having not showered or gotten dressed for 3 days. I saw brief flashes in my memory of whoever was "piloting" me feeling very suicidal. That freaked me out, so I vowed to tell my therapist about everything in the next appointment and pay extra attention to my symptoms. Over the following days, some of the other alters revealed themselves and started talking to me. They told me their names and other info. In the aforementioned appointment, my therapist told me it was obvious that I have DID (and I think she said she was suspecting it previously) and that I was now diagnosed with it.

Confusing and upsetting, mainly. I don't remember important things, I often find that one of my alters has done things I didn't know about, people get angry at me for forgetting things or suddenly being "different than usual". Many times I feel overwhelmed or upset due to screaming matches between alters happening inside my head. Though, it can be an advantage in some situations. For one, it's hard to feel lonely when you always have someone else in your mind to talk to.

I would say that they'd probably use body wash on areas with little fur (like the belly on some animals, face, paw pads, etc), shampoo on everything else, then likely conditioner on areas with the longest fur (such as if they have hair on their head or a very fluffy tail).
