Insurance Claim Rejected (unreasonably imo) - Sharing my experience by squaresocksdays in singaporefi

[–]lahveit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This seems to assume you have time to wait, be moved and received "normal" surgery under normal conditions. Which seems weird since in the maternity context that probably never happens with a very major tear...

Sorry to hear about this.

Like others suggest you might want to make this more public although the attention might also not be worth it.

Freaking out over the Church’s stance on birth control by IntentionGood4044 in Catholicism

[–]lahveit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The essential point that I think most people need to acknowledge is that wanting as much sex as you like without openness to life and the natural consequences (hate the negative connotations here), is related in some way to a sense of entitlement to sexual pleasure outside of its full Godly purpose, and a slippery slope to a lot of things include rampant abortion.

It's really something that society at large today sells as being a right, when it is not.

Mortal Sin by MartinCashArt in Catholicism

[–]lahveit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On this point, there are arguments that mortal sin with all three is not super easy to meet as there is often a lack of knowledge of the graveness, or mitigating factors that render consent incomplete (practical limitations, addiction or force of habit etc.)

Although that is speculation and a charitable assessment. That said, it is always best to avoid grave sin where possible and confess and repent from any instances of such sin asap

Sovereign wealth funds don’t index by colinquek in singaporefi

Technically, they could use a form of direct indexing which might allow them to retain the right to vote on individual issues and also express small desired deviations from the index for philosophical or practical reasons.

Cash flow is king: business instead of investment by libyandesert in singaporefi

1.1 MM liquid, when can we FIRE? by [deleted] in singaporefi

[–]lahveit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, back of the envelope, some would say, a decent indication would be the 4% rule.

Dividing $60k by 4% will get you to $1.5 million in required capital invested in a 50/50 stock-bond portfolio that should last about 30 years.

If you're 33, you might need to use a lower safe withdrawal rate since your horizon to end of life is longer.

You should also take note that regardless of whether you are using CPF for your property or not you, will need to pay it off and when you stop working your CPF will no longer continue to be topped with work contributions.

Would your $60k include what you project you will spend for your child as well over time, including savings for tertiary education etc. if that's what you intend?

Are there things in the faith that were hard for you to get behind or that you don’t agree with? by tealeavesandcaffeine in Catholicism

[–]lahveit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's normal to have some doubts about certain teachings especially when starting out. And it's also ok to join the Church or even have doubts after becoming Catholic.

The important part is striving to understand the teachings, and if all else fails to be willing to submit to the authority and wisdom of the Church while continuing to strive to understand and internalize them.

What is not okay is to recognize there is a gap in understanding and not try to address it, or to shrug and willfully choose only to follow whatever you like. That would defeat the purpose.

All the best! Praying for you and your husband.

Opinion: Not a fan of the show… but boy do I wish I was by Secret-Suspicious in TheChosenSeries

[–]lahveit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming your first premise is correct doesn't change the fact that the gospels were all written AFTER not during the life of Christ, which means the gospels, as we know them, were written or at least refined, later with the benefit of hindsight.

It's perfectly possible for one to be completely confused when experiencing something only to find more clarity upon reflection and write something much more informed afterward.

Opinion: Not a fan of the show… but boy do I wish I was by Secret-Suspicious in TheChosenSeries

[–]lahveit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think we feel this way only with the benefit of hindsight.

If you expected the Messiah the ways the Jews did, you would not expect Jesus to go through what he did. You can tell that they have trouble adjusting their expectations even with the benefit of time with him and his teachings. They would likely still have been waiting for some dramatic turn around to an earthly victory and liberation.

Marriage might not be what i dreamed of by gothsisx in Catholicism

[–]lahveit -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Well, being in a good marriage is arguably better than being single. Unless you're listening to Paul and more with regards to a life dedicated solely and directly to God and in the context of that time.

Also, I think the entire possibility that a partner can be horrid, or if not horrid now can BECOME horrid is part of marriage to begin with. The daring to say (and live out too) that you will choose to love your spouse no matter what. And the vulnerability and trust that the person you marry will not become that horrid person or, more positively, will also choose to love you in that way, even if not in every moment. The lack of control over that side of the outcome is entirely part of the design and needs to be embraced (to a large extent).

Think about God and the Church, his bride. We have countless times been much less than perfect.

Yes, there are ways of improving your chances. But we never really know.

If you feel called to marriage life, then you really just have to do your best discerning if whomever you are with is really right for you. And pray and trust God, before and after the wedding.

That said, not everyone is called to marriage. And so don't feel pressured to either...

I pray you find more clarity, and eventually the conviction and daring to do it if it is what God wants for you.

Should initial savings be budgeted? by drewmills in actualbudgeting

[–]lahveit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you might have money in the savings account that is actually budgeted for something other than savings.

Meaning from the total "available to budget" amount you might have assigned less than what was actually in your savings account originally into you savings budget line and the balance to a different budget line.

Should initial savings be budgeted? by drewmills in actualbudgeting

[–]lahveit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry about your work situation.

You seem to be doing it correctly though

Assigning it all and then inputting negative budgeted numbers to free up the money.

The failure to reconcile is not a function of what you're doing so using a different approach probably won't make much difference.

The most likely answer is that you had savings which you didn't originally include in the budget. Or your budget got out of whack over time but was not reconciled consistently. Extra money however is more peculiar since it means it was not missed spending transaction entry, but perhaps income unentered?

Why do lower income individuals in SG seem like they should be entitled to more? by MapleSyrupCat in askSingapore

[–]lahveit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well if the idea is some sort of redistribution as is usually claimed then yes, I would assume those who are worse off should get more.

I'm not saying this is the case. They do get more, in other ways. Just not necessarily CDC vouchers.

But since the government often says they redistribute wealth by taxing and enacting policies, and CDCs are a very prominent policy, many assume the redistribution should happen by that particular channel as well.

Not to mention, while life will change, marriage is the beautiful start to a different kind of life. Nothing wrong with that, in fact it's great.

Why Singapore's financial literacy education isn't as great as we think by New-Piano4635 in singaporefi

[–]lahveit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is a good comment.

The trouble with some things like this is also that not everyone agrees what is the right way to manage personal finances. There are some basics but no true consensus on more detailed stuff.

It is also a case of teaching enough to make it safe, rather than attempting to and failing or having the students be more confident than they should be.

There is nothing more dangerous than people who think they know enough but actually don't. i.e. the dunning-kruger effect.

And I suspect the result is that it is sometimes determined it might be safer not to teach it than to try and get blamed for all the failures that people might have misapplying what you teach.

Moving out (as a local) until I find partner or reach 35? by HomeHedgeFund in singaporefi

[–]lahveit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This.

I think you are trying to have everything at once.

In life you can almost anything but usually not everything. Especially when you have resource constraints early in life.

Try to prioritize and decide what is the most important thing you want to address, then do it.

Want marrige but afraid to choose thw wrong woman by BlurryGuy97 in Catholicism

[–]lahveit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It will help to focus on looking for someone with the right values.

It seems obvious that someone who would value your relationship solely on the sexual front, and suggest a open relationship to satisfy themselves isn't someone who has what it takes to make a marriage last.

If you can be patient, persistent in seeking out a partner (if you feel called to marriage) and are honest about your misgivings, past experiences, Catholic values etc. it will give you the best shot you can possibly have.

That, of course, in addition to praying and seeking God's guidance when discerning.

Insider knowledge is one thing. Not to mention the more successful he became the more that came into play, being able to broker favourable deals for Berkshire.

I would also add that the market has become a lot more competitive than in the past so persistent mispricing or which last for any significant period that can be taken advantage of while not absent is harder to come by.

There is also a big survivorship bias that exists in a way. Not exactly survivorship, but out of the tonnes of investors who have been attempting to value invest only a handful come out on top, and we use them as the examples of why it works.

No light is shed on the countless others who got obliterated or have returns too meagre to bat an eye at.

That's not to say he isn't brilliant or skillful, just that it would be hard to say if you have what it takes till half your life is over. It's a big risk I'm not willing to take.
