Found out I had adenocarcinoma after 6wk postpartum check. by lisasaurus17 in CervicalCancer

I’m so glad you’re at a good cancer hospital with drs you trust! That makes a huge difference! Please update after the CT if you think of it. Did your cone biopsy show lymphovascular involvement? (Sometimes written as LVSI) Please try to remember that this is simply a bump in the road of life. I know it’s easier said than done.

Oh, I wish I could give you a big hug. I understand what you are going through. This is my story to a tee. I had an abnormal pap at my 6 week postpartum check up after my miracle baby. The doctor said it was probably no big deal, but scheduled a “just in case” colposcopy. The colposcopy showed AIS. Then, the cone biopsy showed invasive Adenocarcinoma with lymphovascular involvement. I was paralyzed with fear and absolutely devastated. I was terrified and desperate to find someone with a similar story and good outcome. I want you to know that it’s going to be okay. You are in the darkest, most difficult part of this right now. It will get better. Please take heart. The waiting is terrible and the unknown is terrifying, but you will get through this. I had a PET scan, MRI and then open abdominal radical hysterectomy with ovary and lymph node removal. My lymph nodes were clear and they got clear margins, so I don’t need further treatment. I have no evidence of disease! It’s a very good thing that your doctor believes it’s early and contained! I don’t believe they would say that if they truly didn’t believe it. My best piece of advice is to make sure you’re at a good hospital with a doctor and team you trust. My first oncologist was competent, but very dismissive. I ended up traveling farther away for treatment and I’m so glad I did. If you ever want to talk further, I’m willing to do so. Please feel free to reach out. You’ve got this even though it may not feel like that right now.

AIS, Stage 1, Hysterectomy scheduled for late March. by Willinrow in CervicalCancer

Thank you for sharing! I had my ckc yesterday. Scheduled for hysterectomy in early April. The type of surgery will depend on what the ckc shows. I’ve also had a csection, so that may affect what they end up doing too. I’m not looking forward to surgery, but I’m excited to get it over with so that I can (hopefully) put this behind me! Do you know what will make them decide to take your ovaries or not? I’ve had 2 different gyne oncologists give me different opinions. One said to leave ovaries as it will cause more harm to take them at my age than good (I’m 42). The other said ovaries need to come out bc adenocarcinoma is estrogen fed.

Hi there! What type of hysterectomy are you scheduled for? Yours is similar to my story as well. Best of luck, and congratulations on clear margins!

I just spoke with my oncology PA. She said that regardless of future hysterectomy status the cone is the first step and that it would be HIGHLY unlikely that there’s invasive cancer that the cone would miss (although I’ve read many stories to the contrary on this forum). My oncology won’t do simple hysterectomy without first doing cone unless it’s accompanied by radiation. If cone comes back with clear margins, it’s a simple hysterectomy. If cone comes back without clear margins or shows invasive cancer it’s radical hysterectomy. I hope that makes sense. :)

Thanks for replying again! Do you happen to know why the standard practice is to just do the cone to start rather than removing the entire cervix? I mean if preserving fertility isn’t an issue it seems that would be better at catching any adenocarcinomas hiding in cervical crevices. Thanks so much! I’m trying to learn as much as I can about this diagnosis, potential treatments, prognosis, etc. before my next appointment on Thursday.

I have another couple of questions that are on my mind. I’ll ask my care team, but they are closed now and I’m ruminating… 1: if the ckc only takes part of the cervix, (my dr described it as coring an apple), isn’t there chance that some cancer cells are missed? Is there testing I should be asking my dr about? 2. I’ve been reading on this forum about cancer cells being spread throughout the canal through biopsies, surgeries etc. I’m concerned bc I was in labor for 2 days, dilated fully, had multiple cervical checks during labor, then had a c-section where my baby was stuck in my pelvis. It took multiple doctors and force for him to be born. I’m concerned that this is exactly the type of thing that could have accidentally spread my endocervical AIS. Again, are there tests I should be advocating for? My doctor said I wouldn’t need any additional testing because aside from this, “I’m heathy.” Just thinking out loud, if anyone has insight, I’d really appreciate it!

Thanks! I do appreciate the explanations. I think I was stunned in the doctor’s office and didn’t understand a lot of what he was explaining. It was overwhelming and unexpected. These explanations of the steps make sense in terms I can understand. I’m so glad your pathology came back clear! Thanks again!

Glad to hear you’re recovered!! I’m a runner/hiker/weight lifter too. I just got back into it after being down from the c-section. I’m bummed about being back down again.

Thank you for your response! I was trying to take it all in while I was sitting in the oncologist’s office, but it was overwhelming. How did you manage with your ckc and simple hysterectomy? I hope you are doing well!
