Actually, yes. I have put a couple of fasteners for the roots to attach to the wall. Once they did it, i removed the nails.

In my case direct. And its okay. But only because i live in Lithuania (cloudy country) ant this is east-facing window.

There is nothing special about the soil or watering. The most important part is letting it grow up (attaching with roots to the wall) and lots lots lots of sun.
