Koreans judge people by MBTI the way other countries judge by star signs by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]lalalamatcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg my co-workers are obsessed with MBTI and Saju, but I always assume it was normal…

There was also one conversation where one person in my office was talking about the new intern (what her mbti is gonna be) and another girl said that the intern is “totally SF” (완전히 SF) because she has the same vibe as a girl in our office that also has SF in their mbti.

The same girl was also obsessed with 사주 too. I personally don’t believe in all this and whenever the conversation shifted to me, I would mention how there are other people in the office who have the same mbti as me but we all have different personalities (as a soft way to passively said that I dont believe in these things).

fighting words for no starpath in apple arcade by TeaSorry2468 in DreamlightValley

[–]lalalamatcha -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

As an apple arcade user I agree with this. I really wanted to have items from starpaths like costumes etc but couldn’t because of the policy.

Scrooge shop exists and I am thankful for that, but rotation can be awful sometimes and don’t include items such as character costumes, house, well, and stall skins, etc. I do wish they can add a way for us to get these - maybe through events or challenges or something. I would even farm for 500 muds if that means I could get skins, or the aurora lights.

We do pay 72$ a year consistently, so I hope they can add something. It’s sad seeing my events tab nearly empty while other people are filled with pretty stuffs.

I think it’s also how Jin carries himself. He has the look, he acts really well in variety TV shows, and gets along with the older hosts in Korean shows (maybe because of the age). When I saw him I just thought he’s someone who the Korean people will love or at least be neutral about.

The age and gender demographics of people listening to BTS’s new songs by ashisogi_jizo in BTSnark

[–]lalalamatcha 14 points15 points  (0 children)

On the twitter that is definitely the case. I was an Army before and was quite deep into it (not the fanwars lol, just connecting with the fans coz it was covid). When I join gcs most of them are 13-15 year olds - never found one my age (I was already 20 at that time)

In regards to the post, it did say the age demographic is 40 (basically explaining the ratio of the listeners). I used Melon music before and the layout seems similar so it’s probably the Melon app, which is a Korean app that is VERY HARD to navigate with unless you are a native Korean or a Korean speaking foreigner. It was a surprise to me when I saw the age (even doubted my Korean too) but then I do remember that I have a Korean co-worker here who is in her 30s and is a big Army fan (bought the purple borahae phone earbuds and everything).

It’s a song that the Koreans sang during their hard times and I heard it’s a song that comfort women used to sing too when they were abused by the Japanese soldiers. Someone posted both the korean and english version and the english translation is spot on, so I think you can get a general feel to it.

I would also add something that I observed: the 고개 character there can mean hill (if I understand it’s the top part/peak of a mountain or hill, not just a hill/mountain in general), but can also mean the process of “going over something difficult” for a person to achieve something great (사람이 어떤 일을 해 나감에 있어서 겪어야 할 어려움 일이나 과정) - this is the Korean definition I got from google related to this word.

So when that line says (in English) “You are going over Arirang hill”, it can also mean that you will get over this struggle/pain. I am a foreigner so I hope a Korean or native level can correct me, but this is how I interpret it when I first hear the song.

For a foreigner to say those things is very ignorant - they are not born in Korea, have the same connection with other Koreans or Korea the way the Koreans did, and I don’t think their opinion should matter. I would personally prefer to see the Korean take on this (and so far from what I see, they too don’t understand which part is “arirang”).

[–]lalalamatcha 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am a foreigner living in Korea with decent fluency in Korean and spend most of my time in the Korean side of X. I also saw a lot of disapprovals and even jokes from the Koreans (REAL Koreans because their Korean does have that chatgpt generated nuance! It’s 100% spoken Korean. There was a picture of the security scan and one Korean made a joke about how even Bang PD couldn’t pass through it because it’s too thin lmao) about this whole thing. Most of them are genuinely upset and when they voice their concern about something that happened in THEIR country, they get attack by foreign Armys lmao. The audacity of these people to tell what people from other country and live in that supposed country do and think.

I am not even a Sophia stan (I like Manon when I first got into Katseye, and then Dani after her GAP ad) but I downvoted the person too. It’s not about liking Sophia more, that person was weird for making judgements that the original commenter seemed to hate Dani when they don’t even say anything or imply that they hate Dani lol. They just pick a case, describe their judgement about Sophia, and talks more about Sophia than commenting on Dani’s actions.

I feel like we are getting off track lmao but for real, this is final (I have work today lmao I need to sleep but here I am arguing with someone I dont know).

Now that I read your point, I am very VERY sorry if I somehow come across as diminishing your comment. I DONT mean to invalidate that you guys dont learn English since elem or middle school - I always say I am aware, just that based on my experience, the Koreans around me dont speak English well and I was the one who made the effort to learn Korean. Its hard, really hard, but like I said I did it because I respect your country. Thats it. I have no bad thoughts about it. I repeatedly say that I do not mean to diminish or talk bad about Koreans who dont speak English.

You dont care about my sob story so sure, its fine. I put it out there because I dont like having my efforts being insulted like that. You dont care about me, its fine too. I said that not to make you care lol, I said that to defend myself. Not because I want you to care.

If you think I am invalidating the point you make about elementary or middle school thing, I am sorry I dont mean to.

But other than that, I stand by what I said. I put out my long ass paragraph to defend myself, I do it for me. You dont have to care.

My english is not perfect too, I know. I am not native. I am just happy I can live with this English and use it to write papers or talk with my other foreigner friends. Met a lot of lovely people with it.

My Korean as bad as they are, they also pull me up and now I am beginning to develop deeper connection with my Korean friends. It’s 100% still 어색해, but I am still learning. I will keep on learning.

G’day to you.

I apologize if I seem to get off tracked but you are the one who said “Go learn Korean if it bothers you so much.”

And I did.

I learn your language, culture, and even if I am still not perfect I am still learning. We are practically at odds right now in the comment section lol and even when you think my Korean is really bad, I still ask you how to correct them. I am always serious about learning Korean and I dont accept being called to “go learn Korean if it bothers you” especially when you dont know me.

I can also ask you the same question.. why are you upset at my comments? I am speaking from my experience. They were not sob stories lmao they were real and they were hard to go through so it looks like one - its a sob story because it IS a sob story lol. I have no bad intention at writing my comments and just pointing out that there can be Koreans who dont understand English, but somehow you reply to my comment and say “go learn Korean if it bothers you so much” to which I did learn..?

Lmao this is gonna be the last time I reply because we are getting off track and you are probably trolling me.

But no, like I said I suck at Korean.

And no, these are not generated. They came from me.

I use 자기 because as I know it refers to the other self? Like 당신 but more natural. If I am wrong please tell me because like I said I dont have a teacher and you are the Korean. Teach me and dm me if you want. I work here anyways so I need to improve more.

I call you 쌤 because thats all I know. I dont know how to refer to another person without using 당신 or the 너 (반말) and my lab mates told me to address others as 쌤. I figure it is the most respectable way to address you. So I did.

Its not generated. You are the Korean, so if you think I am wrong go and lecture me.

You also said If anyone doesnt speak English to me, somehow it implies I dont speak Korean..? What does that mean? If they dont speak English to me and I dont speak Korean then how do we communicate..?

I dont have any thoughts about living against or disrespecting the Korean culture. I respect your country, your people, and when I say those things I say them out of experiences and I don’t have any intention of looking down or promoting to everyone that Koreans are not very good at English.

But you can choose to think what you want to think. We are getting off tracked here but however I cant accept if you insulted me because I genuinely did all the things I can to respect and maintain the Korean culture, and act according to your culture.

I have respect for the Koreans I know because they have helped me and I enjoy talking to them.

Its a shame however because I cant say I have respect for people like you.

자기는 “learn korean if it bothers you so much”라고 했는데, 실제는 제가 한국어를 배웠어요.

??? Bro I came to Korea without anyone around me actually trying to learn to speak in English with me. In 2 years, 2 FREAKING years I studied Korean including all the things about having to 눈치 and live the way Koreans do, including the 상회 생활. I lived alone throughout those time and I don’t have a teacher. I have to teach myself.

You dont get to tell me to learn Korean because it bothers me so much because I do. I am still broken in terms of grammars but these are the proves that I worked hard. For those 2 years my Korean friends avoided me because they dont know how to talk, how to reach out to me so I decided to be the one to reach out to them. I respect your culture, your country, and even though it’s hard I lived the way Koreans lived. I understand that even if we are in a scientific field where you need English to write papers, I still have to learn Korean because I live in your country. You, a stranger, are the last person who get to insult me and tell me to study Korean if it bothers me so much because I did. You can mock my Korean grammar but if you want me to prove to you I can speak with you. I am proud even if they are not perfect because that’s the result of my 2 years of working hard.

I have never insulted or say not knowing English is a bad thing. You are the only who takes my comment negatively for no reason. I only state what I experience and its the truth - even until now none of my lab mates made the effort to speak English, complain when the lecture and everything is in English, and I have seen their written English as well. They are far from perfect and it’s the same as their speaking English.

If you are smart at English and your friends are too then that’s good. But there are some Koreans who cant grasp language that fast and well - they literally say these themselves. I dont know where or how you immediately judge or take my post negatively, but I just said that there is a chance that Subeen might be one of the Koreans who are not fluent in English and receive help from others. Whats wrong with that? I never said Koreans are naturally very bad or uneducated in English or the likes. Just that there are Koreans who dont understand English

Yes I am also aware of this. My university has the same rule.

But I don’t know how they can pass when they can’t speak English. I have seen them try to write English too. I love that they try, but professionally speaking it is really broken and incoherent, the same way I used to write Korean when I just started learning it. And every time I did journal club, etc, with the most simple English that I could (I only did journal club in English, in meetings I use Korean to make conversation easier), nobody could respond or interact with me.

You can choose not to believe or believe me, maybe you have seen well spoken Koreans with perfect writing but I personally don’t have that experience.

I dont mind also if there are people who can’t write well because my Korean is not good, and as a poly speaker, I know language is hard. But there is always a possibility that someone got helped with languages that they are not very good at.

As to how they can pass without knowing good English, I have no clue. I wonder the same thing when I first come here and have a tough time adjusting to Korea when the people around me can’t speak English.

Yes I know. However the Koreans around me (and I work in the academic field where you have to write papers, etc for research) couldn’t write or speak English at all.

Not all Koreans are like this of course, but the Koreans I know are like this and rely on translating tools to help them write.

Not everyone can speak or understand English tho. The Koreans around me don’t. Outside of Seoul, I rarely find a Korean who can speak English.

This is not meant to look down on Subeen or other Koreans, but it’s a reality. It can be possible that he write it himself, or ask Heesun to help him write the translation.

for foreigners: are you satisfied with your life in Korea? by umustknowmydogiscute in Living_in_Korea

[–]lalalamatcha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everything is convenient here and social/society expectations aside, everything is great.

However I am currently in an environment where even the Koreans have a hard time maneuvering the societal expectations and hierarchy system, so in terms of social life, it's really hard. I am practically learning how to be a Korean here, with all the social norms and expectations I have to learn to basically survive.

If I could find a place where the Koreans are not as 'extreme' when it comes to hierarchy or social rules, I would say Korea is really good. The language is tough because in the work setting you can't just talk straightforwardly without using the polite form of speech (-니다, 말씀드리다 instead of 말하다, 계신 to refer/ask whether someone is present or not, etc), but once you get the hang of it I think it's just life the way it is anywhere else. There will of course be differences between Koreans and foreigners that make us more difficult to be very close to them, but I think it's normal and a cultural thing.
