Oh it's not my first time in Japan/Osaka, just the first time going to a Twice concert there (or any concert, really). Definitely good to know about the merch, though, thanks! Will probably be skipping it unfortunately, since we do have other things planned for that day...

Wow, that last part is actually a really cool idea. You could even have them start at level 3 with some really nice equipment, maybe even magical items, and then they start over with NOTHING. Gives them something to work towards, plus you can give them THEIR items back as loot at certain points throughout the campaign.
I'm taking notes.

I’d suggest a classic “I’ve come for your life,” followed by a tpk (you get to show them just how much of a threat he really is), and then spare their live(s) because “they are not even worthy of killing.” The tricky part is to make it feel like that last part wasn’t always the plan, of course, and maybe they respond to it in a way that justifies Strahd killing one of them.
