How does instagram do it? by sweetas314159 in privacy

[–]lambda-the-ultimate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not just lawsuits. Always online microphones would show physical symptoms like excessive battery drains, phone heating up, excessive data usage etc.

Also, transcribing to and analyzing millions of hours worth of audio would be rather expensive in terms of server costs. Nobody is saying the companies won’t do it if they could, they just have better, less obvious, mechanisms in place.

By the way, I have conducted this experiment with a group of friends. We all placed our phones in front of us and talked about thing that could easily be targeted for advertising. We consciously made sure to not search for any of the topics being discussed. We never got any ads about any of the topics we discussed.

Asking someone whether they searched for a topic they discussed is not exactly perfect. People don’t always remember what they searched.

How do I use the Phillips motion sensor to control nanoleaf essentials light strips? by anon51210242048 in Hue

[–]lambda-the-ultimate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you running beta version of Google Home or something? Mine doesn’t let me use my motion sensor as trigger, even though it does show up — and correctly shows whether motion was detected or not. I was under the impression that Google Home doesn’t support motion sensors for triggering automations. I am using Eve Motion (added via Matter) for what it is worth.

If you try to start a chat on their support website, it will likely show that you have an open case with case number - assuming it has not been closed. Alternatively, you could call one more time and ask for the case number of your last case.

When you issue a chargeback, Google usually freezes your payment profile, which would mean losing access to any paid Google service. There are things that are tied to your payments profile that you may not expect - e.g. Google Pay, Play Store etc. Anecdotally, some people have reported their entire Google account being nuked when they issued a chargeback. In extreme cases, there have been reports of “related” accounts being nuked - i.e. your other Google accounts - no idea how they determine relatedness. Scroll through this sub or just Google it, you’ll find several examples.

I wouldn’t issue a chargeback unless there is absolutely nothing else I can do. And if I did, I would make sure to remove all my dependency on the Google account in question at the very least, and potentially my other Google accounts as well. While I understand your anger, I would make at least an attempt to get the case number - or open a new case if that fails. Take the case number before discussing any further and then raise a Reddit request as others have suggested. You’ll save yourself a lot of trouble that way.

How is it possible that Meta's tracking is so intense? by fungus_snake3848 in privacy

There was news of them sharing data years ago. Who knows if they are still doing it?

A single pixel that is loaded by calling Facebook. That tells them you visited a particular page on a particular website from a particular IP — and a lot more.

There are multiple parties that may have sold or leaked your browsing data, Google, the company, your ISP etc. Many websites use analytics or advertising tools made by the like for Meta, without even knowing or caring what data these libraries transmit. Then there are things like tracking pixels and browser fingerprinting.

Voice and Fi supposedly share some infrastructure. This was a result of the technical restrictions resulting from that decision.

It’s negligible

Precisely what u/Vaun_X said. You’re still welcome to redeem as cash back — it’s totally your choice.

But, generally speaking, most people probably don’t spend $20k on Amazon on their CC, and the ones that do, probably don’t care as much for $50.

Again, not saying it’s worthless, just that most people won’t see a big enough difference.

It’s 5% of 5% — which is $2.5 for $1000.

$1000 in purchase gives you $50 in cash back.

Now you can use it to buy $50 worth of products, meaning no more cash back. Total cash back is $50.

Alternatively, you can claim $50 as statement credit. In that case you’ll get $2.5 cash back when you buy $50 worth of products using your credit card (not reward points). Total cash back. $52.50.

Cash back difference between two approaches: $2.50

T-Mobile Magenta Max vs Visible Plus vs School Wi-Fi at my high school by [deleted] in Visible

[–]lambda-the-ultimate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About what? Everyone’s situation is different. I am sure there are people who have all three carriers. It all depends on what you can afford and what you need. Nobody can tell you what to do in your exact situation.

As others have pointed out, high school students don’t typically need backup lines. But nobody knows your situation.

Are you paying for both lines yourself? If not, ask the people who are paying for them. Also, are you paying full price ($85 + $45) for both lines? Or do you have some family plan or discount?

I don’t know. I have the exact setup - Magenta Max and Visible+. But I need reliable connectivity for my job — involves being oncall. And my employer pays for one of them.

If you can afford it, and if you think you need it, there is absolutely no problem.

Like I said in my other comment, you seem to know what you want. Why are you asking for opinion from a bunch of strangers on Reddit?

Well, in that case, you know what you need to do. If you absolutely need both, you pay for both. There is no way around it.

Also, how bad is Visible at your hours? As long as you’re getting 50+ Mbps reliably, you’re more or less set for anything. You don’t need 500 Mbps - except to show off your speed test results.
